So, to explain the end. The reason the lack rotation didn't result in two-face when it was really long was because the orbit was still changing where the sun hit. That's also why around 320 was the most extreme, it was the closest to 365, one year. You'd need one rotation per revolution to become twoface. Also known as being tidally locked. And the snowball at the end was because increasing the orbital period also moved the earth farther from the sun. You can see in all that mess around the sun that mars and everything is much closer, and the next planet outward from earth is saturn after he increases the orbital period.

Challenge idea: graystillplays has the ability to cheat, but so does the board. The further he gets into the board, the more the board cheats to try and stop him from winning. There's plenty of checkpoints when he starts, but if he cheats, checkpoints get removed from the board.

I heard something about the rotation of the Earth being very important for heat because of the molten core in a science article many years ago. Its extremely hot down there and as you slow down the Earth's rotation, so does the core and its heat. But eventually, when it gets too slow, the side facing the sun is simply cooked by the sun. Also it looks like it maybe moved a bit farther from the sun for some reason even though you didn't change the orbit? Weird... By the way, peak GreyStillPlays content is still definitely the My Summer Car series, but its good to see Universe Sandbox back 👍
@Lightman03595 ай бұрын
There was a Nova/NatGeo documentary on this. It was in their catastrophe what if series, it was called "Aftermath: When the Earth Stops Spinning". The rotation period slows gradually to match the orbital period, so that like Mercury, 1 day = 1 year, with the northern hemisphere's day being at Perihelion [Nothhern hemisphere summer] and the southern hemisphere's day at aphelion [NH winter] for the harshest effect of 6 months of daylight on the most people.
@arutirauland4 ай бұрын
1:11 the rotational period isn't exactly 1/day initially because Earth needs 23 hours and 56 minutes to complete a rotation around itself, rather than exactly 24 hours. That is also the reason why every fourth year has an additional day.

@Neo-vz8nh5 ай бұрын
that is not true. The distance increased because he increased the orbital period,, which leaded to higher orbit. Rotational period has nothing to do with the orbit.
@onorebakasama5 ай бұрын
Not true. The increase in the orbital period (at the end) is what moved the Earth away from the Sun, and that's because a larger orbit requires a lower orbital speed to match the weaker gravitational pull of the Sun; gravitational pull weakens with distance to a body. As for rotation (the majority of the video), it got colder (and hotter) because the low rotational speed meant the a single point on Earth had more time to cool down or heat up under the Sun.
@Mtscl325 ай бұрын
Not true, if anything slowing down the earth should reduce tidal forces as the offset bulge created by spin should be reduced as well. In fact this is why tidal locking is an equilibrium state

Since the Earth travels around the Sun in its orbit, it has to rotate slightly more than one full turn on its axis for a given point on the Earth to face the Sun again. When the Earth completes a full rotation relative to the Sun (a solar day = 24h), it has actually rotated slightly more than one full revolution relative to distant stars (a sidereal day = 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds or approximately 0.997 days).

When the rotation is one year per day, meaning it's the same amount of time it takes to go around the sun, it's called tidal locking and only one side of the Earth faces the Sun in the other side remains in permanent Darkness though that is a shity coordinate transformation considering the Earth is technically traveling a straight line or a geodesic so it shouldn't be considered to rotating when it's tidally locked

Of course the earth is getting colder. The sun is not getting hotter so the sunlit side is getting the same amount of energy/heat, but the dark side is getting increasingly more and more time to radiate the heat away with no replenish, so it becomes a vicious cycle of the cold side losing heat and the planet trying to find a temperature equilibrium between the cold and the lit side. but since the dark side getting no other heat source other than the lit side, it's like as if you opened all the doors and windows in half of your house at a winter night and then got surprised your house is cold despite the heating being on on the same temperature as always. And once you reach 365 days/rotation, the earth is now tidally locked to the sun, in other word, the same side always faces the sun. At such a planet life would only be possibly at the area where the dark and lit sides meet at an eternal dawn/dusk and winds would be insane.

The reason, why it startet at 0.997 of a day (or rather 23h 56min), is because it is a SIDEREAL day (pronounced SI-DE-RE-AL, not side-real).
