I grew up with Rossi-Biaggi rivalry, every sunday race was a battle and I remember in that period the motorsport crowd in Italy were split. Biaggi was a real talent, the only mistakes he made was to race in the same years of the GOAT.

@Rizky Wira Nope. I don't think Capirossi and Ukawa belongs here. But Biaggi got destroyed by Gibernau in 2003 and 2004 and Gibernau was more consistent and better in these 2 seasons than Biaggi ever was in MotoGP. Same goes with Kenny Roberts Jr. Kenny Roberts Jr. was more consistent and better in 1999 and 2000 than Biaggi ever was in MotoGP. So no matter how you look at it. Without Rossi Gibernau wins 2003 and 2004. Roberts.Jr won 2000 and would have won 1999 if not for Criville. So the only time Biaggi could have won the title is 2001 and 2002 without Rossi. Melandri and Hayden was kinda like the future in 2005. But flopped when the next generation of riders settled in 2007 and 2008.(Stoner, Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Dovizioso).

I always felt Biaggi was the more hardworking of the two. It was a no-contest with Rossi. Biaggi had spent too much time in 250s and so was fully drained mentally and physically during his stint at Yamaha in 500cc. Biaggi-Rossi fights were the most fun to see because they always had different racing lines, vastly different from each other.

I think the Rossi Biaggi rivalry was the hardest in Rossis long career. From that point of view that Biaggi was the first big name that really challenge Valentino in a chain of a lot great riders during the years. Biaggi hunts him from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. But most the time, Biaggi could only come out at second best. In 2002 and 2003 Rossi was unbeatable on the 5 cylindre Honda, with no chance for the underpowered M1. In 2004 they really switched material, when Rossi moved to Yamaha, that underpowered and unwanted bike, and Biaggi took the very successful RC211V. Different Bike, different factory, same story. No chance for Biaggi.

What a rivalry it was! Two different styles and personalities. I miss those battles! As a Biaggi fan, to finish second so many times to Rossi, I think it s compliment for the Roman s valour. He was the best from the rest.

Jon, you probably didnt see any of those races. Yamaha driven by biaggi was drastically worse than honda. When vr46 moved to yamaha , most of the honda engineers working with him moved to yamaha as well... leaving hrc team with serious technical difficulties. Moreover biaggi had a serious injury before starting that season in hrc. Biaggi never had a team that allowed him to compete with rossi
