The 928 is my favorite Porsche. I absolutely adore its shape and the oh-so-German engineering integrity it exudes from every detail. Unfortunately, the 928 was far too good for this flawed, careless world, and people didn't understand it. As a result, they didn't sell nearly as many as they should have, and we've lost far too many examples to neglect and abuse. So glad you've bought this and, as always, I greatly enjoyed the video!

By the way: I've noticed your car has the very desirable option of a full leather-wrapped interior, including the dash and roof. Man, that's fantastic, as it really makes it extra special! Excellent purchase!

Thanks, Matteo. You know what? I think I can almost feel how much time and good will Harm Lagaay and his team were given to think about the right way of putting this project in shape. And they did! And here’s a project idea for us: reaching out to him an making an interview …!?

Regarding the full leather interior, I have a secret plan. They guys in Spain have replaced the middle part of the seat covers with new leather and it looks absolutely devastating. Worst upholstery job I’ve seen for long. Also, we all know how difficult it is to match old and new leather, so I guess I’ll give her Pascha seats. Does that get your blessings?

I owned a 1982 4.5 litre 928 for about 10yrs, it was 21 yrs old and had 22,000km when I bought it, original Champagne silver paint, 5 speed manual. Apart from a cracked tailgate latch, the car never had anything break on it. A comfortable GT car that you could drive for a thousand kms on a trip then get right back in and do another 1000 kms. A lovely car.

I love the 928 and am myself embarking on a project to restore a 1984 S. I may be biased but I think the 928 is one of the very rare true GT of its time. My car is an automatic -which most people would consider a defect- but still rides like a real GT. I will follow your journey with interest on Alba bring mine to life . Congrats on your great content, your 911 suspension series has been very useful on the alignment of my own 911. Cheers!

Thanks for commenting, Mario. I totally agree, the 928 is a formidable GT and if you’re used to 911’s, which are puristic and simplistic, the amount of thought that went into the 928 is surprising. The flip side being it’s hilarious complexity in interior and electrical system.

The 928 was the first Porsche I drove, I was just out of Graphic Design collage, had a job designing a brochure for Rollag rollshutters AG. I wanted a Porsche parked in front of the garage with the rollshutters down, I walked into the downtown Porsche dealership and asked for a car, I explained the shoot and offered a by line in the credits for the dealership, within fifteen minutes I was behind the wheel of a 928 with a mechanic beside me. I got the shots I needed within twenty minutes and spent several hours driving around the Toronto touristy areas. That was when I fell in love with the 928, such a classic beauty all too seldom seen these days.

Thanks for commenting, mate. I really like that story. I didn’t have filming to offer, so I went for some imposture to get into the cars I was yearning to drive. There was the Yuppie phenomenon in the eighties, so an expensive pair of jeans and a jacket with heavy shoulder pads sometimes did the job.

In 1980, my father came Home with a 928, his car was at the dealer for some days. We had the 928 for a week and drove the Autobahn A6. He always had fast Porsche, but this was totally different. This car was fast, faster than most cars, but even after an Hour at more than 200 km, we felt relaxed. Right the Opposition of a 911 turbo! But in Tees days, Nobody wanted this car! Today I don‘ t understand why.

Very beautiful car. I would say that the only thing I do not like about this car are the reverse pop-up headlights. It doesn't really make sense as the purpose of pop-ups are to protect the headlights when not in use. But here they're exposed all the time no different from fixed headlights. But it's indeed one of the better Porsches to have come out! And who would ever forget it as Decepticon Dead End in Transformers, and as Gloria Baker's sci-fi vehicle in M.A.S.K? I have fond memories of it in the 80's as a kid!

@greasyfingers nice job, the 928 was a personal passion of mine for a good number of years, it was nice to see a part under the bonnet that i too, of course replaced on one of the 4 928’s I cycled through in various states of disrepair. When I worked at Porsche and drove a 997 GT3 the 928 lost all its appeal, i had a Spyder and both the 996/986 997/987 are so much better driving cars and don’t have any of the recurrent gremlins that the 928 anyone is going to buy today is inevitably going to come with. The 928 has an amazing support group online, there were even owners who learned how to refresh blown Motronic computers and all kinds of things. Nice job, I’ve only seen the first 4 minutes, i like that you take the effort to restore the headliner as opposed to simply replacing it. Actually, owning and wrenching on the 928 is how I developed my Passion for all cars Porsche has made, I learned about the quality of the 928 when I would disassemble something and marvel at the ingenuity of the part or the quality of the materials. Really an exceptionally well made, well engineered and well designed cars in the Porsche history.

Thanks for an extensive feedback, Ryan. To me, the 928 is a widely misunderstood car. So many people consider it as the successor of the 911, but I never was. The actual reason for the concept is Mercedes’ success with their SL series. If you look at it that way, you suddenly realise how brilliant it is.

I loved the style and panache of my 928 but one of the biggest headaches was an “earth leak” causing the battery to constantly drain (tried several new batteries in trying to track it down). My word these 928's are complex things. I don't think i'll be swapping my 944 for one soon. But although they are perhaps a little over-engineered, you can't help but love them and I am so glad you have taken this on. Cannot wait for part 3. I started restoring my 944 during lockdown and finally got an MOT on April the 19th. If I bought a 928 to restore tomorrow, I would probably finish on April the 19th 2032 - seen as they are doubly complex (if I wasn't made bankrupt beforehand). @@GreasyFingers There is a red one in America! I am a bit of a puritan (not in the Presbyterian sense :) ) and I have endeavoured to keep mine original at every stage when possible - as long as the PET doesn't throw up 'NLA' and you can't find a replacement on Fleabay, or at the breakers. It's a lot easier and cheaper to modify. Too many classics are modified - even at a higher level like the Gunther works 993, the Singer 911's etc. Why? Travesties. So I enjoy your restorations because you are getting the cars back to what they must have been like when they left the factory. I've had an inkling of that now that 95% of the mechanical work is done with it's new bushing all round and the L Jetronic delivering, the tall but slick gear change. It's driving like it's meant to. Delete the problematic MAF, replace the torsion bars with coil overs, replace with gas struts, stick a short shift linkage in, over cam the engine, re-map the ECU, make it go faster... and in that process, you loose the soul within that was inexplicably Porsche; the thing you couldn't put your finger on because Porsche's are greater than the sum of all their parts and the only cars I have ever owned that are positively inexplicable. That complexity is what makes them and gives us headaches as you try to reverse the accumulated neglect and abuse. I wish you luck on this 928 journey.

Hi, great car. So great, that I own 3 of them. One thing: My mechanic told me not to solder the resistor unit for the fan speed. He said that this unit is getting very hot and everything I would have soldered would fall off, as the unit is getting hotter than the melting point of the solder material. This is the reason why the unit is initially cramped and so expensive as a second hand part. Best wishes from a German dude who lives in Taiwan

Thanks for commenting. I had exactly the same thought and in fact I somehow expect it to fall off at some point. That’s when I’ll get my hard soldering equipment out … 😊 Thought I’d just give it a try the easy way first.

Mark the location of the mounts is key. When removing the fan rheostat, tie a bit of string to it. Makes refitting easy, like a pull wire - you pull up on string and then grb it with pliers. One man job

In case anyone is wondering, the wire in the resistor pack is Nichrome resistance wire which is crimped in place. It can get too hot for solder to hold in place and it does not accept solder well. The resistor packs are also NLA from Porsche although new-old stock pops up from time to time. Find the source of your sunroof water leak. The silicone tubes can tear at the A-pillars or rust can eat away at the drain nubs. The sunroof panel has a plastic drip plate at the rear that can crack/warp and leak water onto the center of the liner. They are still available new for $300-ish each. Nice colour. The criminal that bought the car new had good taste.

Thanks for commenting. When I soldered the new resistor in, I already reckoned it won’t endure for long, but I wanted to give it a try. Till now it’s good, so let’s see … I’m having an eye on reasonable eBay offers in parallel. The sun roof troubles me a lot, so any good advice is highly welcome.

Please change the timing belt as soon as possible... and please check the engine for all rubber gaskets, rubber hoses (especially fuel system), sealing rings and everything made of rubber from the suspension, steering system, drivetrain, brake system. Manufacturer Elring for example states that all their gaskets, sealing rings etc. have a lifespan of 10 years, especially if getting hot, in contact with engine oil etc... also if exposed to intensive sun- and UV- light After this period, the softeners contained in the material will have deteriorated, it will harden out and start to brittle and crack. You know what you're doing, and I don't want to mess up with your stuff; it is just meant as a good advice! 😊

Thanks for your comment, mate. It's much appreciated. I totally agree to all you say, though I must admit that the devil on my shoulder was whispering in my ear that some of it might sure be alright.
