Why not just put a noggin inbetweem the rafters to give you something to attach too?

That would be a last resort as that would be roof alterations made by us. Whilst it would most probably be fine we prefer to fix to the rafters as that is what is covered by the structural report we have done 👍

What concerns me about adding panels to a typical tiled roof is the quality of the existing roof and the quality of the panel installation. The majority of roofs using bitumen felt sarking will be torn in various places and disturbing the tiling will inevitably make matters worse. Also, the timber sizes on this age of roof would not comply with current standards and yet additional loads are being applied. If we could be certain of the expertise in building construction and assessment then that would allay fears but as with many 'modern' construction systems there will be too many unknowledgeable and cowboy contractors, particularly since the industry is unregulated.

I have similar concerns about my own roof. Essentially I see the structural report as confirming that there is at least 25 years of life in the roof structure and the bitumen sarking. It’s 55 years old already. All in good condition but I can’t see it lasting that long.

@@janwillem6953 Who carries out the structural report? If it is the installer's consultant then clearly they will have a vested interest in the outcome of that report. If the report is in any way negligent then unless there is a transferrable warranty between the customer and the consultant then there is little hope of recompense when it goes wrong. Also, any warranty will be time limited to usually 6 years but if the roof fails after that then the customer bears the brunt of all the repairs. 6 years in the life span of a building is not long. Any work that affects the structural integrity of the building ought to have a full independent assessment.

If Iet an installation company know I am interested, guaranteed they will install on my roof. 40cm centres with concrete tiles & no rot is fine - no expected concerns there. For now the bitumen sarking will last 6 year but not 30 years. All ideas of an ROI get destroyed if there issues with the roof over its lifespan.
