Why? The Queen of England married her cousin. Myra is a third cousin of Lewis whereas prince Prince Philip the royal consort is a second cousin from one side of Elizabeth II's family and a third cousin from the other side of her family. And Winona's acting here is Winona's acting not any actual portrayal of Myra's mindset at the time. What made the UK journos of the time, 1959 upset was Myra's age not her familial relationship pre marriage. It was only in America after Lewis' fallout from his disastrous tour of the UK did her being a cousin come into the lore. Again I state The Queen of England is more closely related to the cousin she married than Jerry Lee Lewis is to his cousin he married.

This is historically inaccurate. In real life Lewis got some older girl to go into the courthouse with him and pose as Myra. He came back later and showed Myra the marriage certificate, much to her shock and surprise.
