A lovely tour through some of my favourite bits of Devon (although as someone who spent 20 years living in Cornwall I'm not entirely sure I'm allowed to have favourite bits of Devon). The valley of rocks is just down the road from Lynmouth, where in 1952 a freak storm caused a devastating flash flood. Also on that road is a small religious retreat center called Lee Abbey that I have stayed at several times. Not forgetting Exeter, the home town of one of four British universities at which I have studied. Lovely stuff. Perhaps Dartmoor and/or Exmoor wold be a fitting next trip, also a great excuse to visit a few old quarries or mines, stop for a brew at one of the many interesting old coaching inns, and/or eat numerous delicious cream teas.

To get the most out of the sea change to the ubiquitous rolling hills that the long journey down to your holiday in North Devon have so far lulled you into, it would've been better to simply show us some good ol' dashcam shots. As you come from the North, round the corner and drop down into it, your senses are all firing because somehow you've been rocketed to the surface of another planet. The crater like bowl, the meteor shower of rocks scattered about, the sudden lack of trees or shrubs and most of all the heavy presence of the air pressing down on you in its eery silence. Brilliant!

Back in the day, one of the best scooter rallies was Exmouth, then they stopped being allowed hehe My mate and I ended up being hospitalised as I had bought several gallons of finest scrumpy from a shifty farmer and well, proper scrumpy belies its rather strong potency and it was a hot day on the rally campsite and officials and kind people had to drag us to hospital as both of us were wandering about the place rather oblivious and starkers for some reason... diagnosed with acute alcoholic poisoning... then on the way home the hub of my Vespa broke and I was picked up by Stonehenge and taken all the way back to Wincanton where lots of us scooterboys had broken down were waiting and this garage owner got 20 of us in his Granada estate towing a trailer and began a 24 hour trip of hell as he dropped us all back and that was the last Exmouth rally :D
@TheCardiganRАй бұрын
I had a scrumpy experience at the 1983 Weston Super Mare scooter rally. A gallon of rough scrumpy for 50p back then led to some daytime drinking. I woke up early evening to find the inside of my tent covered in vomit. I had about 5 punctures on the scooter over the weekend including on the journey home. I managed to stop a crowd of scooters and buy a spare wheel off some guy for a tenner which was the last of my money. Ran out of petrol on the Chiswick flyover and had to push the scooter a mile to the off slip fully loaded up with the tent and me and the girlfriends stuff and rummage through pockets to come up with a 5p coin to put some petrol in. The garage owner took pity on us and gave us 10p worth, which got us back to the girlfriends house on fumes. The experience put me off even the smell of cider until last year. 😅

I work in maintenance of a bigger property. We use big old mixing bowls around as planters. In a few the plants died. We are in between closed, open, partly open and renovations. So maintaining things to the top standard is not important everywhere on the property. At some point I removed the dead plants and placed rocks into the planters. So far no one complained or gave compliments. Sometimes there is grass or other plants growing and dies again. Probably it will change next year when the landscaping is being worked on. It's good excuse to spend time at the stone garden. After all they need to maintained, too. 😂
