I had an '85 Mayfair while stationed in Germany in '96-7. It was the last of the lead fuel cars. Always had fun in and with it. One of my favourite stories to tell about it is the ticket I got on Autobahn Six doing 130 km. Never could get the car to do it again. And it would take a cloverleaf tight and fast.

I'll never forget the first time I encountered a Mini, I was in my hopped up 55 Chevy. It passed me on the interstate, and I was gonna show it my taillights. He spanked me like a red headed stepchild. He took an off ramp at a blistering speed, I followed, and he disappeared. I'm pretty sure it was a Cooper S. I was 18 years old at the time, I bet he's still laughing about it 50 years later.

Fer sure. The cigarette ads alone were sometimes worth turning on the boob tube. And now, we get Matthew McConaughey riding around in a fancy schmancy SUV counting cup holders.

An excellent video for a beautiful legend. It took me a lot of time to myself to notice how great is the new legend. It is just the right challenger as it was the mk 1 in its days. Thanks for bringing this fantastic car alive for many years to come.

I had one of the first 1959 MINIs (A Morris 850) imported into Canada. I drove it through many of the back roads of Ontario and attracted much attention (female), left much Detroit iron eating my dust on twisty roads, and generally had the time of my life. Even went camping with a 16' canoe on the roof. Wish I still had it but unfortunately winter and salted roads rusted it out beyond economical repair.

Honestly, BMW only did it so much justice. Here in the States, all anybody wants is a stupid truck or crossover SUV. While I'm sitting here thinking about getting a classic Mini. Very bright. Haha
@richardreed26885 жыл бұрын
OK, I'll admit I have a pickup truck and an SUV. In my defense the SUV is an older model with good bones that I bought with cash I scraped off the top of my dresser, but it has three rows for my grandsons who have dubbed it the Battle Wagon. But, when Ford announced the demise of cars in the U.S., I bought a Focus ST. It's not a Mini, but I think it evokes the same spirit: a whole lotta fun in a small(ish) package. A LOT of fun. "No officer, I'm not in a hurry, I just like to drive fast."

Great video. Thank you, KR Archives. I knew some or most of the technical and racing history of both generations of Mini, but I never realized the significant financial risk BMW took to bring the new version to production. It is rare to find legacy corporations with balls anymore. The American auto industry is now taking that same dirt road the British did - making only vehicles that seem to be selling now and not banking for the future. Ford comes to mind. Their decision to stop selling cars in the US (save for the Mustang which is arguably an enthusiast car and not a family prime mover) will blow up in their Dearborn faces. Kudos for KR for the great video, and kudos to BMW for coming up with something that no one knew would sell.

Agreed. Apart from a vague similarity in shape, the BWM Mini is not a mini. Power-steering, A/C etc, don't belong in a Mini. A Mini is about driving, not the comforts.

@Tony B the US market has been doing that to cars sinxe the nineties . Engineered to necessitate dealership garage work was how they modeled their sales . They even went as far as to use fittings that could only be installed or removed with proprietary tools not available to the public . My 2003 Chevrolet disentegrated once week after the last payment , too . It limped into a Honda dealership for tradein value . I will never buy American again . Honda , Toyota or BMW only . To be honest those brands employ just as many Qmericans these days as American makes do .

The Morris Mini and Austin Seven are amazing and revolutionary. They were also well made and reliable. Unfortunately, the BMW version of the Mini is neither well made nor reliable. They are a case of maximum profit for minimum cost. I would rather buy an original than get a new one for free.
@nigeh53265 жыл бұрын
I owned 5 of the original minis and they were not that well made or reliable to be honest. Rust came through on many panels including the a panels and up inside of the front wings. They also leaked through door seals and cut out if the rain got past the distributor cover behind the grill. But they were fun and easy to tune if you knew what you were doing. I had a 998 mini that hardly any other car could catch around town but it did have a modded cylinder head rally cam bigger carb and exhaust along with modified suspension arms and wider wheels and brakes. Not bad for a few hundred quid on top of a £300 purchase price. The guy I sold it to ran it into a wall racing a Fiesta XR2.

New "style" MAXI will not even come close to the success and level of variety in models than the ORIGINAL Mini!! God forbid when BMW would have a rip of cloning a Moke, Riley or Marcos? Sadly most people who drive that thing on steroids are proud of their cupholders, GPS and gadgets, like the snowflakes are who don't really know what is going on under the bonnet!!
