The Great Empire of the Dawn is the THE unifying theory of Ice and Fire world-building, relating to everything from the magic swords and comets to the dragons to the first Westerosi humans, the last hero, and the Long Night, not to mention the Hammer of the Waters, the Shade of the Evening Trees, the Ifequevron, the Old Ones, and more…

Your account of this really is just the objective proof that you might be one of a half dozen people with the knowledge to actually plot and complete ASOIAF should George never finish it. Six hours of actual substance is really impressive.

Yes. But this spine is the kind of work that is needed if someone wants to write in the same kind of style as Tolkien and Martin. Or even someone like Glen Cook, who I can catch references to. The gray waste description reminds me of the Glittering Fields in a very deliberate way. Including K’dath taking the place of the Nameless Fortress

I truly believe that with the large network of authors, who make up George Martin’s circle of friends, that he has some sort of contingency plan, if he were to die before the series is finished. I know that it is widely reported that George has told people to f*** off when he has been publicly asked this very question. But I think people have taken that the wrong way. I have actually seen people say that Martin’s attitude is that if he doesn’t finish his magnus opus then it will remain unfinished. But I strongly disagree. I think that he just finds the question extremely rude, and that he doesn’t owe anyone a public answer about it. But while keeping an eye on his NotABlog, I noticed something interesting about one of his entries that occurred sometime in the past year or two. I didn’t write down the details, but I have gone back to look it up a couple of times, and anyone can find it if they take the time to look through the entries of the last couple years. What I’m talking about is that George made some comments when one of his author friends passed away. He has lost a number of his longtime friends and colleagues over the past couple of years, and you can tell that he takes it hard when that occurs, as it’s only natural. When this particular author died, he commented on the fact that the man had not completed his seminal work. In fact, George made sure to say that this author had been working on this particular book for longer than George has been working on Winds. He then said that he really hoped that one of this author’s colleagues would complete the story for him. In my opinion, this was a VERY telling comment. It certainly shows that Martin is not adverse to the idea of an author finishing up the work of someone else due to their death. Martin has a large circle of friends and colleagues who are fellow authors. He has also mentored many people who love his stories, like Brian Condal who he specifically asked to head the House of the Dragon series, for example. And we know that George has lots of material that he has written and rewritten, including chapters that are always being pushed forward toward the next part of the series. Besides material for the main story, I expect that he has lots of notes and partially written pieces for the second half of Fire & Blood and future Dunk and Egg novellas. He has probably thought through a lot of details about the Blackfyre Rebellions and he certainly knows more about Summerhall than we are privy to. I find it really hard to believe that George hasn’t made some plans of who would take up the completion of some of this if he were not able to. And after reading that particular blog entry, I was convinced of it. I know that he famously hates the idea of outlines. So I don’t expect there is any kind of step-by-step roadmap. But I do think that between his wife, his employees, colleagues and author friends that he has some thoughts on who would take up such a task. So when people say that Martin will never live long enough to complete the stories, I worry more about whether I will live long enough to see their completion. We all hope that George will have many years to come, and the time and ability to complete this story of his that we are all so invested in. But if the worst happens, I still believe it would not be the end of the ASOIAF saga. Hell, for all we know, he may have some contractual plans, drawn up legally to appease the corporate interests in these properties in a way that still gives him a voice about what happens. He is too smart of a man to believe that he is immortal, even if he is unwilling to publicly give answers about this issue, which he finds objectionable for the public to ask him. Sorry for the long rambling thoughts here, but I hate seeing people go on about how he can’t finish these stories. And I know that’s not what was being suggested here. I too think that David would be a great resource for working on these stories.🙂

One of the best livestreams I’ve seen in long time, Ice & Fire related or otherwise. It was over 6 hours, yet I have even MORE questions about the Great Empire of the Dawn than I did before. I want to know so much more because the major “high fantasy” of it all is in such stark contrast to the “low magic” main series. Even D&E is functionally “no magic,” but those events are tied so closely to the Great Empire of the Dawn and Long Night. Speaking of AWOIAF, I think people often forget that, since ADWD in was released in 2011, we’ve gotten not one but two books since then (both of which have been crucial to our analysis on the main series), plus two TV shows (and counting), and on top of that, George has still already written more than ADWD worth of TWOW. Everything we’ve gotten since Dance has been connected to Winds, and I think it’s because George needed to establish these concepts before he could even write Winds.

Hi David. I do like your hypothesis on lemurs as a reference to some magical transformation. Really a good catch. As a biologist, I would like to point out a few things about lemurs. The term lemur is actually an old Mediterranean word (Greek/Etruscan/Anatolian) that denotes a spirit or a ghost, usually with a malicious intent. The festival of Lemuria in Ancient Rome is described by historians as a communal activity for removing evil spirits (a form of excorsism). It is not a term used by Malagasyi culture or religious practices (as far as I am aware). Also, there are no lemurs outside of Madagascar (well, except the zoos). It is considered a basal primate lineage that evolved separately from other primate families, and is endemic to Madagascar. I think the main confusion here is that early taxonomists used the term lemur for several kinds of mammals without any evolutionary relationship between them. Basically anything that looked/walked/vocalized like a malevolent human/humanoid/etc. That being said, this is probably what you are going to love the most: there is a specific type of lemur called ‘aye-aye’, which is suggested to be a cognate of ahai or ahay in the local language. There is some evidence to suggest that locals were TERRIFIED of that animal because of its morphological features and the fact that it is mostly nocturnal. The legend has it that aye-aye has the tendency to sneak into people’s huts late at night and stab them in their hearts with its lance-like index fingers! Cheers!

24:50 Preston Jacob mentions this in his "Dany and the Page of Lies" theory videos, for one thing it's highly likely the storm Dany was born in is simply referring to Stannis's assault as a storm and there was probably no actual meteorological storm (or if there was, Viserys greatly exaggerated about it) since it's never mentioned again plus we're told by veteran sailors such as Cotter Pyke that the worst storms are during the autumn and winter, not summer. Additionally, I especially want to point out that after this there's never any mention of Dragonstone being damaged or having been repaired (which would be noticeable as no one had the means to replicate the seamless nature of the fused stone) during Cressen's and Davos's POV chapters

It was a pretty epic stream weaving all these ideas together into a very cohesive theory very impressive thanks David. Also Its probably been said but Asshai reminds me of Tolkien's Minas Ithil the Tower of the Moon, which became Minas Morgul after it was taken by the Ring Wraiths.

My theory is that the oily black stone IS fused black stone, but that it has been corrupted by evil or suffering in some way. Some of the oily black stone exists in some relation to human sacrifice. The seastone chair, the oily black stone on an isle of cannibals. If the black stone is magical, maybe exposure to horrific things corrupts it somehow. Someone correct me if I'm missing stuff.
@jonhauge-evaldsson783
@jonhauge-evaldsson783 Жыл бұрын
Oh! Maybe the first technique of fusing stone was a type of bricks? Before they learned to "shape the stone with magic". It could explain Asshai and even Yeen and Moat Cailin.
@ThatsMrFrank
@ThatsMrFrank Жыл бұрын
@@jonhauge-evaldsson783 Oh, I think they're ALL fused stone. I think the technique at the point of creation is the same. Some sort of magic, maybe blood related magic as David states. And maybe, some aspect of the stone being magical means that it has some sort of response to life related energies, like human sacrifice. Hence the seastone chair being oily, given its significance to the ironmen. Moat Cailin I'm frankly unsure of. It may be that a similar but different magic was used.

Well if the moon has a "dark" and 'light" side maybe it's good and evil sides. All the rock is moon meteor but some is bad and some is good. The fusing of the meteor pieces was the same but the magic inherent was different

Lml, I have been watching/listening to your content for a long time and this was absolute tour de force of knowledge. You present so many new ideas and summarize your OG content. One thing that this stream got me thinking about was the idea of comet and moon meteors - was it something done by magic or something that just happened and increased the magic? Both are possible and knowing George, we might never get this answer. Also, either option has interesting potential ramifications: option 1 - the ability to use magic to influence celestial bodies....I mean jebus, that's crazy. Option 2 - opportunistic people figure out that these moon meteors provide magic powers and end up blighting the land. That's cool too and it seems very George. Thanks for this awesome content. Might have to relisten to this one.

I think your theory about humans being created by/from one or more of the Elder Races works really well with so many of the themes present in ASoIaF. It completely deconstructs the whole "we're better than you" mentality that so many of the characters in the story have and there could be a lot of interesting parallels to what's going on in Slavers' Bay and at the Wall if the first humans were created to be slaves. I can't wait for the inevitable deep dive videos on this theory

Easily one of the best 6+ hr iceberg streams I’ve ever had the pleasure listening to. Great job compiling all of your geotd theories into a coherent narrative! Lots to think about here but like your first men takeaway. It’s interesting to think about magical races potentially creating or crafting the later races of humanoid species and then stepping back to observe as evolution carries itself out. All of the older races (children, giants, etc) are dying out and humans will replace them being “most fit”. Can’t help hut think about the eldar in lotr leaving middle earth to men at the end of the 3rd age.

The fused stone is likely Basalt, which due to it's metallic nature would likely suffer if not properly formed. the storm destroying it during dany's birth could imply that the valyrians couldn't work it as well as their predecessors.

Basalt isn't slimy. Also, the stone breaking in the story told to Dany is just one of dozens of inconsistencies that seem to be there more as either a series of mistakes, or to throw the story Viserys tells her into question.

The Storm is supposed to be divine in the story. If not it's a tsunami. I don't think we have ever seen a typhoon, tsunami or other similar incident against the fused stone. Except Valyria which is a smoking ruin. I don't see it as inconsistent, just symbolic of the power of the storm.

I'd think Asshai was one of the great cities of the Great Empire of the Dawn & Azor Ahai is directly influenced by Moorcock's Eternal Champion as there are aspects of him in many characters and they will all come together to battle the Great Other.
@soxpeewee
@soxpeewee 3 ай бұрын
Etymologically, Azor Ahai sounds suspiciously like Azores + Ashai. The Azores are 9 island in Portugal that are renown for being a magical land of volcanoes, thermal waters, steam geysers and beautiful waters. Ashi (aka Ashai in GOT) is a Avestan word for the Zoraoastrian concept of "that which is attained or earned." So basically I'm thinking the Empire of the Dawn had Ashai as a paradise location that got destroyed by someone working to it's destruction aka the Bloodstone emperor. I think Martin is using some references to Moorcock (unfortunate name) but because Martin likes to play linguistic and mythology games... anything used will have a real world name or a real world religion ties in.

Your streams have been awesome lately, glad I'm finally caught up. Great Empire of the Dawn and White Walker icebergs I've watched a couple of times. Your star sword idea got me thinking, though...I wonder if George is drawing a bit from King Tutankhamun? In his tomb was famously a dagger forged from iron (Tut lived during the bronze age, where forging such a weapon with bronze tools would not have been possible) that is believed to have come from a meteor. He had a necklace in the shape of a scarab with a gem forged from this same supposed meteor. Anyway, I wonder if the "Bloodstone Emperor" tale is in any way inspired by this? Tut's family dynasty (Akhenaten was his Dad) could also maybe parallel with the idea of a King upending the social norms of his society and worshipping a new God. Idk but either way, your streams always get me thinking, love all your content!

Perhaps Azor Ahai caused one of the moons or a massive asteroid to appear and then break apart somehow as a devastating attack. Perhaps as an ally to the Children of the Forest against the First Men in exchange for access to the Weirwood Net or maybe even the leader of the First Men who invaded, and the pieces of the meteor landed on the Thousand Islands, the Arm of Dorne, and the Neck, devastating the defensive lines of the Children or offensive lines of the First Men while also getting rid of some enemy where the Thousand Islands now remain

I really think it was more than a targeted missile strike, more about obtaining the power of the gods. I think the meteors were an accident

I looooooved this stream! Very conspiracy theory but intriguing! You're a great loremaster so I'm not taking any of this against you but here are some funny tidbits: -"Lomas Longstrider claims to have seen Sun Chaser" (Thousands of years before Elissa Farman) -"Shoutout to the Sumerians from like Conan or something..."

I think the "Dracomorphs" are a red herring. I think they are either an accidental byproduct of the experiments that led to the creation of the dragon peoples aka Valyrians or, more likely in my opinion, they were intentionally created as a bioweapon. The dragons were probably not the only weapons of war the the Empire of the Dawn developed.

I really enjoyed watching this stream! I love how in-depth you get, and I really love the idea of those legendary Westerosi figures like Bran The Builder and Garth being Dawnish (heh) or at least taught by the Dawnish. But the one thing that stuck out to me was that the First Men often get lumped into one group, but I'm pretty sure the World book says that it's most likely a bunch of different tribes of man finding their way to Westeros. Is it not possible that some of these tribes are Dawnish-adjacent? Or even of the GEOTD itself and that pre-disposition allowed them to accomplish the legendary feats that are so prevalent in the lore?

The Andal crown of 7 stars is a Direct reference to Tolkien's crown of Durin. He spotted the stars in the lake the mirrormere which ties into the water-woman stuff in ASOIAF you mentioned. A woman personification of a lake would also be an Arthurian reference when tied to Durin because the lake/lake lady is granting him kingship by presenting the 7 stars of Durin's crown.

This stream was amazing! I was hoping you would talk about Night's Queen/Corpse Queen/Amethyst Empress and the Knight King in the context of this timeline. Was Knight King a Night's Watchman who was allured by the "spirit" of Nissa Nissa aka Corpse Queen (to make him Night's King and create The Others?) sometime after Azor Ahai/Bloodstone Emperor killed her? Or the Corpse Queen story is more about what is happening inside the WWNet after Azor Ahai killed her?

I deliberately steered away from that level of specificity for this one and I also was trying to stick with the GEOTD side of things. I'm going to do a white walker theory iceberg soon and we'll get into all all that. In the meantime check out the video called "The Weirwood Goddesses"

Obviously which leads to the obvious conclusion that DET = AA. It'll be like in South Park when Craig reluctantly saves the world from the giant Guinea pigs, bees etc. Take it easy man. Peace

In Elder Scroll 4 oblivion one of the best swords you can find is Umbra's which is an ebony sword with a black blade and it captures the souls of the people it slays so you can store them in soul gems for later use. Elder Scrolls lore goes way deep insanely deep so I could see them getting influence from the same tropes and series as you're talking about. Congrats LmL I haven't been around much but I've been popping in here and there and your channel is still getting the growth it deserves so as always thank you for the content. Praise Garth.

Great stream! I had to come back to finish because I actually fell asleep (Not through lack of interest! Just getting over a cold 🤧). Might've missed it, but I'm convinced there may be a correlation to the 2nd moon cracking and the birth of dragons which isn't the literal interpretation they say. Such as a magical ritual to give life to dragons required such energy that it caused the calamity... or the moon cracked naturally, causing a long night, and during this time dragons were first bonded, etc. I hope we get to see things like this expanded upon in other books & media! Asoiaf would translate extremely well to animated works and videogames imo, especially the more magicky stuff from the east and the past.

Presumably, the GEOTD must occupy the far east of Essos, because Dawn rises in the East. Which fits with the idea that GEOTD would be west of Essos across the ocean.
