So for all we know, Daynes and Hightowers could be descendants/loyalists of the Amethyst Empress who fled to Westeros after the Blood Betrayal.

Especially since all of later dragon riders had purple eyes, I say yes. There is no way it’s a coincidence that Danny and her people all had purple eyes, silver hair and were pale asf and have literally NO connection. It’s makes sense and I like it more. I want to know the story there. What happened after the blood betrayal and in between the rise of the Valyrian empire

The Dayne's have another strange tradition, they only give their sword to someone that is worthy. What if this tradition started because the owner of dawn was not able skilled enough to vanquish the Night's King, and had to lend the sword to a Stark who's own sword had broken during the fight. The Stark then returned it once the battle ended and returned to Winterfell with his own broken sword. Him being remembered as the last hero.

it would be nice if there was a little more land there, like a smaller continent, at least we're still only halfway across the planet, taking into account that something like the summer islands, dorne or somewhere "northern" (still far to the south lol) of sotoryos might be the equivalent of what the equator is in real life we still have an immense vastness of sotoryos one probably the Americas and maybe Australia of this world? As to how Dawn got into the hand of the last hero (if the last hero wasn't a Dayne), the books mentioned the last hero had a group of companions, who one by one died, leaving only the last hero. So perhaps a Dayne was in that group, died, leaving his sword available for the last hero. And then the last hero returned it to Starfall after the war.

Agreed. It would make sense for the surviving hero to take up the sword that was working against his enemies when little else did. It would make even more sense for the surviving hero to feel honored bound to return the ancestral blade the helped save his life and win the battle even with such a long journey required to do so. All things would still fit with a Dayne traveling north to stop the long night and a Stark being the last hero.

@@DavidLightbringer That’s my thought too. If these meteors are the sources of the Great Empire’s flaming “dragon steel” swords, that would make them valuable, so they would probably go in search of every one they could. One brought them to Westeros, where they set up their outpost, but without the full night of the Empire behind them all they could do was establish a foothold, but could not conquer. At some point another meteor fell and that’s the one that the Bloodstone emperor came to worship. Something was different about this stone and it corrupted him and all of Asshai, and the dust and fallout caused the long night.

I forget the exact wording, but: to go west, you must go east. Pass the Sapphire Straights to the Lonely Light. It has always bugged me why the oldest port city in Westros is as far as possible from civilization in Easos. If sailing east from Ashai lands you on the western shore of Westros, that would explain it. Sail east until you see the Lonely Light, aka, the Hightower lighthouse. Qaith gives Dany 10,000 year old directions from Ashai to Oldtown.

@@JoeyWhisperz GRRM has said that Planetos is spheroid, and the Elissa Farman plotline from Fire & Blood strongly implies that you can get to Asshai by sailing west from Westeros, which implies that the Great Empire could get to Westeros by sailing east from Asshai. Further evidence for this is in the three islands (Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visenya) that Farman found on her voyage. Eustace Hightower recounted that they found all sorts of strange fruits and beasts there (including what seem to be Komodo Dragons), but also herds of feral pigs. Which implies that somebody had previously been using the islands as a waystation for long-distance ocean voyages, releasing pigs on the island to create a highly adaptable, self-restocking resupply depot. Watch the Extra History episode on the Spanish using pigs in their conquest of the Americas for a primer on the utility of this tactic for overseas empire-building

If Asshai is "by the Shadow" and guards the straits which are the only known sea route through it, "Shadowchaser" could be an epithet for a person who attempted to navigate those straits and find what lay beyond; Eldric could have been the first person to discover that route to Westeros. It mirrors "Sun Chaser", the name of the ship Elissa Farman attempted to sail west in.

@Feamelwen

I think that the "Shadowchaser" nickname might be understood as the opposite of a "shadowbinder". From what we see of shadowbinders, from Mirri to Melisandre, and the fact that they seem to enjoy hanging out in Asshai, it would seem that shadowbinding is a sort of soul-magic, or even bloodmagic, and can be seen as being pretty close to necromancy, toying with peoples' souls or life essence. The Bloodstone Emperor and Night's King were both said to practice necromancy. I would then assume that the hero who brought back the dawn, whether someone different, an atoned version of the aforementioned mythical figure, or someone related to that figure, would be defined as the opposite of that : not a shadowbinder, but a shadowchaser, the one who chases the shadows away.

He is much quicker at writing and a lot younger, which may contribute a lot, but I wonder if Martin has taken so long because he needed to work on other things for a while and also needing so much time to "water his seeds". These storylines are so complex, it really wouldn't surprise me. His other books baser in the world of Ice and Fire may have helped him with TWOW and ADOS.

Corlys Velaryon claimed to have seen Elissa Farman's ship Sunchaser in Asshai, implying that sailing west from Westeros would get you to Asshai eventually. A continent between the two is possible, but unnecessary, and unattested in the text. So the Hightowers and Daynes may have come to Westeros from across the Sunset Sea, rather than the possibly longer route from the east. These ancient people were known to be seafarers.

@@MaegnasMw Now, consider this: When Aeron sees Euron's Valyrian Steel armor in The Forsaken TWOW chapter, he thinks that it is proof that Euron has visited the Valyrian peninsula. I would also note that it is described as scale armor. In The Sworn Sword, Rhoane Webber's scale armor fits her "like a glove," which is almost like a second skin. BUT: The Worldbook tells us that, among the ancient Ironborn, there existed a hero called Balon Blackskin, of whom is said "No weapon made of man could harm him... swords glanced off and left no mark, and axes shattered against his skin." SO: Scale armor is like a second skin, and Valyrian steel is dark-colored and incredibly hard, and Balon Blackskin had skin that was impervious to normal weapons. Euron's armor is not from Valyria. It has been sitting around in the Iron Islands for millenia, and probably comes from the Great Empire of the Dawn. If I had to guess, he obtained the armor at the same time that he acquired Baelor Blacktyde's sable cloak. But that's just headcannon, admittedly.

Regarding the last portion, I think it's makes a lot of sense for Dawn to be Lightbringer. I mean, if you need to put it away for safekeeping in the event of another long night, way the fuck down in Dorne is actually a pretty logical place to put it in case of an early collapse of the North. Also, could it be possible that the original Dayne is actually a son or daughter of the Great Empire of the Dawn and the First Men (Stark), who took the blade south for safekeeping after the long night? That might be why they can have both dragonrider (pale/blond hair, violet eyes) and stark (dark hair, stern eyes) features. Thus, in a parallel Jon also being of the same heritage will wield Dawn and repel the long night again? But thats probably too much tin foil.

1) Ashara Dayne, who's brother is Arthur, has a name with practically the same as Morgana. Ashera, 'she who treads on water', whilst Morgana means, 'circling sea', or, 'bright sea weller'. If that doesn't describe Ashara, and connect the sea with House Dayne, then what does? They might be an off-shoot of House Hightower, founded by Uthor/Usher, forefather/father of Arthur and Morgana/Ashara 2) Another weird literary connection between House Stark, the adversaries of Ice Others, and the Dawn Empire is Topaz. The Topaz Emperor was the grandsire of the Amethyst and Bloodstone Emperors, whilst Topaz is a wizard/sorceror/witch character from Marvel Comics published in the 70s (the same decade that Marvel Comics had Conan the Barbarian meet Elric of Melnibone). Marvel's Topaz once had her power used to raise an army of zombies, like Ice Others and wights, and she used her own empathetic powers to bond with and control the Marvel character, Werewolf by Night, like warging with wolves in North Westeros. Also, Topaz was found in an Indian camp by another sorceror, implying a Vedic influence like Dany Stormborn. So does House Stark have some ancestry thanks to the Topaz Emperor? Did a daughter of the Topaz Emperor fly north to marry a Stark King? Is the first Night King descend from that Stark-Topaz lineage? Did she bring the original Dawn as a wedding gift to her Stark husband? Did Houses Stark and Dayne originate from the same Stark-Topaz lineage? Find out in, 'A Winds of Winter'. Someday.

A few things on Tolkienisms with Lightbringer and Azor Ahai: Eöl the Dark Elf made TWO swords using iron from a meteorite - Anglachel (meaning: Iron of the Flaming Star) and Anguirel (Iron of the Eternal Star). Not much is known about the history of Anguirel after Maeglin - Eöl's son, stole it but a lot happens with Anglachel. It is said to harbor a great malice inside itself (both swords seem sentient) and due to this malice, Beleg cut an unconscious Turin while trying to free him which caused Turin to panic, grab Anglachel and kill his savior with it. Turin would go on to have the sword reforged by humans as Gurthang (Death Iron). Most notably Turin used Gurthang to kill the First Dragon Glaurung (the name most likely means Golden Worm as he had no wings unlike some later dragons) and later himself after a certain revelation that he had unknowingly made his own sister his wife. The blade broke as Turin cast himself upon it and as far as we know, it's still buried with Turin. Gurthang is notably described as black, shining with pale fire, a trait which as far as I remember came from Anglachel and Anguirel should also share those properties as they are made from the exact same material. It could be that instead of Dawn being the original sword Ice, they are sister swords made from the same material. Ice like Anguirel has an unknown fate, while we know exactly where Dawn is right now like Anglachel/Gurthang.

So happy you brought up some king arthur stuff. Even just a little. Everytime I get into High Tower lore I always wonder if they have some kind of ancient dispute with House Dayne. Something in Dark Star's comment that Daynes have been killing Oakhearts for thousands of years made me look up the lore that house Dayne has warred with the reach for probably thousands of years and Samwell Dayne once burned Old Town. The Daynes look like Dragon Lords, and house Hightower is suspected of killing dragons(possibly twice). There just seems to be something there.

but why killing dragons? many people forget that the so called dragonslayers are in truth thieves. the legend of the wealth of a dragon hoard are the proof of it. volcanos are the most valuable sources for gold and gemstones. foremost the great gemstones like diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, amethysts and some more.

Leo Tyrell also has ash hair, whereas other Tyrells tend to have brown hair- this is actually pointed out as a distinguishing feature. We don't know who his mother is, but as his father is commander of the Old Town city watch it's a fair bet that she's a Hightower, and if this is the case (although it may be a stretch) that's another little hint that the Hightowers have "dragon lord" features. As an aside, the artwork at 18:15 is so cool.

I always wondered why Grr Martin put two kinds of special swords in his books, but it would make sense if “dragon steel” weapons were made from meteoric metal, that required dragons and magic to create, and then since meteor metal is scarce they used the same techniques on iron to create what we know as Valyrian steel.

There is another connection to Tolkien's work, particularly to _The Silmarillion_. There is a literal _Lucifer_ in this story, a bright morningstar destined who brings back the dawn. And this role is fulfilled by two people, husband and wife: Ëarendil and Elwing riding on the holy ship Vingilot. As Jon and Danny, they carry blood from the great lineages of Men and Elves (the three houses of the Edain and the three tribes of the Eldar). They manage to bring down a dragon, the greatest amongst all: Ancalagon the Great, so monstrous he drove back the combined forces of Men, Elves, Dwarves and Maiar (angels) and whose wings obscured the sunlight (sounds similar to the Long Night to me). And to top it all, they fathered the twins Elrond and Elros, the latter of whom was the First King of Númenor and the forefather of Aragorn.

It would also make since if the Iron Islands were including in the GEotD overseas outpost, considering the ominous kraken throne made of the same or similar stone as all the other dragonlord stuff. Possibly another thing could be Eurons “Valyrian” armor, my thinking is that it was always a relic pertaining to the Iron Islands, just like the Daynes and Dawn, it was said that an Ironborn hero had some sort of special “skin” that was essentially impervious to all attacks. It would make sense if this “skin” was the armor, and it was merely a relic of the same people that built the kraken throne, and could’ve have possibly left long before the Ironborn got there, and therefore are the so called “Deep Ones”.

Another piece of this that seems to be missed, is that the location of oldtown is on the western side of westeros on the sea. Meaning that if the dawn civilization settled, they would have to cross all of essos, go past and around dorne, and then eventually found oldtown. You would assume more examples of their civilization would occur along that way.. but they arent. You’d assume as well that a giant lighthouse to light the way (hightower having the great lighthouse of Alexandria vibes), why would a lighthouse be located in a place that is obstructed by the landmass of westeros from those traveling from essos? The dawn civilization however is located on the far east of essos. If oldtown was inhabited by seafarers based from asshai, then it reasons that they may have traveled east, not west, to arrive at westeros. A giant beacon on the lower west coast of westeros being the logical location for that. If they traveled the globe in the “off map” direction, they would most likely arrive there.

Hmm, shadow chaser, shadow chaser. Meteors have tails, during the day the tail would be smoke, or shadow. If a meteor hits the ground, causing a fire, there would also be smoke, and if the atmosphere near the Hightower is foggy then the smoke mixed with fog would equal shadows. A shadow chaser would have to enter these shadows to find the debris to then forge a sword from it.

I.e. Dawn a possible pre-Long-Night artifact created by the GEoTD was magically created but was a pre-Bloodstone Emperor sword?

Asshai based on Asian myths of dragons, Alchemy, Sorcery, witchcraft, Gold/Saffron, God Emperors, Nyssa Nyssa, Genetic engineering, Blood Betrayal, Kinslaying etc. GEoD is also based on Asia as the first civilization of Sumer, Mesopotamia (Geo-location of Mesopotamia and THE FIVE FORTS). GEoD expanded the empire by sea(Sailor-ancestors of Greyjoys) as well as sky(Dragon-ancestors of Valeriya). That way Dayne, Hightower, Stark, Greyjoy got the GEoD blood. Three port cities and one outpost at extreme north for the threat(The Others) seems a perfect military strategy. GRRM took Hindu Myths where Kings had God like powers and weapons of mass destruction & they are reincarnations/sons of Gods. Deity who are half breeds/cross breeds, half man half animal. Vedic culture is known to be the oldest religious/culture in the world dating back 3500-4000 BC which had strong knowledge of astronomy, astrology and alchemy (the Blood Emperor and his Starry Wisdom cult). Also in Hindu Mythology it is believed that at the time of apocalypse(End of One YUGA) the reincarnation of God will be born and that is the trademark of the beginning of The End/Beginning. Similar to AJOR AHAI, an archetype catalyst for the Long Night or the approaching doom and the new dawn. Blood-Stone Emperor/Amethyst Empress, the original Azor Ahai and their prophesied reincarnations are the catalysts balancing TWOIAF which is ASOIAF. A Prophecy/Mythical Astronomy that after every few thousands years nature will balance itself caused by AJOR AHAI. Euron is the Azor Ahai archtype who will become the Grey King/Knight's King/New God by Kin-slaying + Holy Blood Sacrifice + Dany's/Amethyst Blood. John is the Azor Ahai who must defeat Euron and become next Knight's King because he is "The Prince That Was Promised". Danny is the Azor Ahai/Nyssa Nyssa/Moon Maiden who will either be killed by Euron to wake the dragon and become the New God/Knight's King or will be sacrificed by John Azor Ahai to bring The New Dawn. Euron, Daenerys and John are the three heads of The Dragon Azor Ahai who will end the current world/system to start a new. All three with ancestral GEoD blood who were dragon people and responsible for last apocalypse.

On the subject of Daynes and Starks: I am always intrigued by the fact that despite there being several incidents in recent times that, in the feudal world of Westeros, should lead to resentments and bloody revenge between their Houses - Ned's killing of Ser Arthur Dayne, and the circumstances surrounding the death of Ashara Dayne - the Dayne's not only hold no grudges but seem to hold Ned Stark in high esteem: naming their heir in his honour. Even Ser Barristan Selmy, who has a memory of Ashara's 'dishonour' that might involve either Ned or Brandon Stark, shows absolutely no sign of resentment towards Eddard Stark himself. I imagine that Eddard himself would have simply put it down to the Daynes respecting his integrity when he returned Dawn to them after the Tower of Joy (perhaps telling them about Lyanna's child and asking for their discretion as supporters of Rhaegar.) Selmy might take his lead from the Daynes' calm reaction. But could there have been more to it, if the Daynes had access to more ancient knowledge or legends, that led them to look upon a Stark or their offspring with dragonriders so favourably that they could overlook him killing one of their sons? In contrast, why did Ashara Dayne take her own life? Was it to do with this event? Why do the Dayne's not blame the Starks?

Forgive the long comment in advance , can't help it with LmL lol , and excellent as always , a great follow up to your other vids in the GEotD series. For it me it nicely highlights GRRM's use of ancient myth , legend , lore and mysteries. Not only do fallen empires and mysteries that require a keen eye / read analysis vastly improve the world building and give a real world immersive feel to the Planetos universe ; but as highlighted in this vid it is more the echoes , clues or likely in this case direct relation , implications and possible involvement with the current narrative and main area of focus (Westeros). Since I have heard and read the theories about GEotD being the Valyrian precursors who likely taught dragon riding, tech and other practices to their successors , as well as likely genetically manipulated species to get the dragon iteration we are more familiar with in the current narrative ; also where the empire was likely located , who & what it was comprised of , and all the evidence for those and other related theories has had me on board from fairly early on. LmL has gone above and beyond giving evidence for such claims in this and other vids , in this vid in particular the relation to Westeros and the current narrative as the pre-Valyrian GEotD seem to have a remnant via the Daynes and Hightowers in terms of notable Houses both of which will likely have some sort of impactful role in the concluding portion of the ASoIaF narrative. And with the base and tunnel structure of Battle Isle being fused black stone is clear evidence of a pre-Valyrian dragon riding empire who made some outreach and created outposts / settlements in Westeros thousands of years ago, well before the Valyrian Freehold. As Lml pointed out the Valyria / Valyrian adjacent looks & appearances that were clearly pre-Valyria are quite prevalent in many instances specifically with the Daynes but also the Hightowers in some cases ; as well as the symbolic naming (with the Edrics and Uthors etc) and connections with LOTR and King Arthur are just further alluding clues that these theories are all the more true. Both the Daynes and Hightowers with the special likely gemstone looks that pre-date Valyria , their ancient prominence in Westeros , along with the special areas (islands) and castles where they settled all suggest both Houses were originally some type of outreach who came via the sea and settled on the outskirts of Westeros thousands and thousands of years ago , well before the Valyrian Freehold as emissaries or setting up outposts for the GEotD to have some interaction with ancient Westeros. Dawn as LmL has highlighted here and in other vids is quite possibly directly connected to the first Long Night and is as good a candidate as any to be Lightbringer and the "dragon-steel" used by the Last Hero in the previous conflict against the Others. Comets & meteors (which is the material Dawn was made from) being mistaken as dragons in ancient cultures , possibly dragon-fire used in its forging and likely part of the tech and implements that came out of the original dragon riding civilization surely make the "dragon-steel" designation work for Dawn and is seemingly the only sword in Westeros that could have been used in and survived from the LN until the current timeline. Ntm the more simplistic shared "Dawn" word in both the GEotD and the name of Daynes' uber ancient special sword is yet another more obvious connection. Which of course is pertinent in the current narrative as possibly part of the solution against the Others to bring the GEotD sword Dawn back into the fray for the upcoming LN (as it was likely used in the original LN) and being utilized by either Jon or Dany who both share GEotD DNA with the sizable Dayne portion of their bloodlines. LmL keep up the great work, look forward to any more GEotD vids , the remaining TWoW vids with Quinn and all your upcoming content.

And in cases like the concepts of this vid which is not only the contribution to the full spectrum immersive world-building and history within the narrative but also fascinating elements with complex clues with foreshadowing and allusion that draws many of us in further and require a keen eye to discern which in many cases is a collaborative effort within the fandom. Crazy part for me is I am not necessarily even a massive fantasy fan in general but I absolutely love GRRM's works for the above reasons along with the use of POV which gives us such great insights into the characters and how open GRRM is about outside influences that he seems to be encouraging us to read and research which is rather unique and refreshing for authors to be so honest about. And also just objectively how good a writer GRRM is , I am not a huge re-reader myself beyond going back and looking at particular concepts , especially related to interesting topics like LmL discusses ; so sometimes with so long between book releases I can be slightly guilty of forgetting just how a good a writer GRRM is at times. Then when i re-read TWoW sample chapters or any sample from the ASoIaF series i just get quickly reminded how objectively good a writer he is in general in terms of how well he puts words on a page in such a fantastic manner. And certainly LmL helps us all raise our game with depth of complexity and understanding of this amazing book series.

Oh jeez yeah my brain did the same thing when I first made the connection... “dragons... coming from a cracked moon... would be meteors, which... would be a great trigger mechanism for the long night!”

I thought about this as I was listening to the first half - Ashai, Ahzor Ahai, Ancient Dragonlords, Long Night, Bloodstone Emporer - killing Amethyst and bringing everything into darkness, after the betrayal and Blood Magic of Valyria... Purple eyes... AmEtHySt Eyes. *The saviors are of the Gaze of which he sacrificed to bring the Darkness.* They were forever birthed from tragedy, into tragedy and would always suffer it. As a race and individual. Genetics isn’t always the case for a person, being themselves; mentality has factors as well; but in a fantasy world and magically inclined race, you expect a level of mystical elements. Not just magical power, prophecy is an example and what does George say? *”Prophecies are a dangerous thing.”* Keeping that in mind, it would be absolutely hilarious if, because of his ignorance, he birthed his own “doom” and doomed others to his fate. Tragic Heroine.

This is quite fascinating since Martin rather obviously brought up problems with our history in this. There are quite a few renowned experts that have gathered proof over decades that the understanding of ancient history and the origin of civilization may absolutely false. Many similarities to those matters can be found here. Not including dragons, of course.

Funny, whenever the Daynes make an appearance, I keep forgetting that they’re Dornish, their appearance being a large reason. I thought there might have been some Tyroshi or Lysene married into the family. But your theory makes so much sense. And it also scratches a long time itch I have on Asshai

If the empite of the dawn also built the wall, it could also be partly built from black fused stone and just extended by ice. That would help make the wall more realistic, since ordinary ice piled up that high would collapse under its own weight.

Since it seems obvious that the world is a globe it seems to follow rather easily that the Saffron Straights must connect to the Sunset Sea and that's how the Empire of the Dawn made it to Westeros.

Coming back to this video after HotD season 1, if the hightowers are descended from dragonlords as well, the dance of the dragons can be seen as the two factions of dragonless dragonlords (Hightowers and Velaryons) fighting to see who would gain control over the dragonlords with dragons. On the surface it's a family feud, but the Blacks were backed by the Velaryons and the Greens were backed by the Hightowers. Is this more symbolism to show two dragonlord factions fought over control of the magic in the ancient past?

I really love the idea that the Last Hero had to kill a Dayne to get Ice, er Dawn. People seem to have a habit of missing the bigger picture and it makes sense that the ancient Daynes might have been the same way.

I love your videos so very much. All the disparate pieces of the puzzle assembled with care, humor, and beautiful pictures. They are like picture storybooks, with the little accompanying records that I used to have as a child back in ancient times. I am engrossed. Thank you many times for sharing your gifts.

Loved the video. Based on the location of Oldtown and Starfall (southwest Westeros), wouldn’t it be more likely that their Dawn ancestors sailed East from Asshai and crossed the Sunset sea before landing on the west coast of Westeros? in 56 AC Elissa Farman made the trip from Oldtown to Asshai on Sun Chaser (according to Corlys Velaryon) so doesn’t that seem more likely than taking the long route through Qarth, Valyria, and around Dorne without stopping along the way? That Empire of the Dawn ancestors fled the Long Night / Asshai doom and headed east until they hit Oldtown and Starfall?
@DavidLightbringer

Possible, but i wouldn’t say likely. The arm of Dorne wasn’t smashed at this time and there no harbors in Dorne. So they would have ended up in Starfall and Oldtown anyway.

Is it possible that Dawn is a sword of The Others, left from the long night? If Valyrian steel is forged with fire, maybe Dawn was forged with ice. The histories have been wrong before.
