I've been messing around with histograms for a while now, and I recall how confusing they were at the beginning. That video would be about the best explanation I've seen. Nicely done!
@brianpaton66873 жыл бұрын
I agree, the best explanaition I've found also. Picking out the individual elements in the image then showing the correlation between the image and the histogram made things much clearer.

Zebras are your best friend. Any new ideas whether 4k 24p or lower 4k 30p is better quality? I have been switch back and forth but like to sometimes slow the footage down a little so mainly shoot 30p. The 1080 is garbage though.

My first “real” m2p video was terrible. I missed this completely. I thought everything was correct, it looked good on my iPhone screen but then at post, it was ruined. Way too over exposed. The street and the sky was blown out. It was embarrassing to produce and submit to my buddies who expected it regardless of how good it was. I won’t even share it with you here. Thanks for the tip!

Great tutorial as always, one of the most concise yet accurate and detailed tutorials I have seen. I have a question, when I fly my drone (say for example a reveal shot of a sunset from behind a mountain) I start the shot from behind the mountain (where it is dark) and then tilt up while increasing altitude and moving forward as I clear the mountains and reveal the sunset behind (which is much brighter), my question is how would you expose this scene? do you set your exposure based on the final scene of the sunset or based on where you started behind the mountain (darker) or somewhere in between ? as always , Thank you for the amazing content you bring to the table.
@DroneFilmGuide6 жыл бұрын
I would expose for the sunset, which as you indicate means everything else will be really dark. Shooting towards the sun is really tricky. What I have found though is you feel you are massively underexposing the shot to accommodate for the bright sun and it looks terrible on your iPad but when you get it back in post, you can raise the mid-tones a bit to pull some more detail out the shot if you don't overdo it. Tricky though! Thanks for your kind words BTW!

Thanks for the tut. When I tried flying my mavic over Iceland, the sky was pretty much always gray and cloudy. Mid-shot, it would turn sunny all of a sudden . How do I deal with changing exposure in flight, please?
@BenHopperVisuals6 жыл бұрын
Shwetha Gopalan it’s hard. Either change it when that happens or use the dreaded auto exposure.
@DroneFilmGuide6 жыл бұрын
If it happens mid-shot then you're stuffed. Nothing you can do. Personally, we recommend you avoid auto exposure so you really just have to start the shot again if the change in brightness means your original settings are no good.
@punapirate6 жыл бұрын
This actually could work to your advantage. This has happened to all of us and specially here in Hawaii where we have a lot of fast moving clouds. You can be starting your run at F8 and then clouds roll in or out and really mess up your exposure. What I will do in addition to reshooting if need be is to readjust my exposure and carry on with the shot then in post cut where the transition is and dissolve from one to the other ... this has a cool appearance of the whole world turning on a light bulb or vice versa.

newbie question !! what software do you advise for editing footage ??
@DroneFilmGuide5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Basic software is all you need. Anything that allows you to do simple cuts, add cross dissolves and fade to blacks, music etc. We use 'pro' software called FCPX so don't really know the others but pretty much anything will give you the functionality you need. Lots of people use Power Director or Filmora.

Firstly, thank you for all the information. Great info and delivered in a great format. Much appreciated. Could I suggest a video on travelling abroad with your drone? I'm looking to do an Iceland trip next year, and would like to take my Phantom 3 Advanced. Plenty of KZbin stuff out there from the USA, but a good old fashioned video relating to our UK airports etc would be great. Once again, many thanks for creating the channel, have registered on your DFG, keep up the great work.

does this apply to D-Cinelike footage (mavic 2 zoom) or is it just for D-Log? I'm not sure I can afford to expose for the sky and have any light left for the ground :S
@DroneFilmGuide4 жыл бұрын
It's for any colour profile. If the sun is in your sky and you expose for the sky, the ground will indeed be silhouetted.
@richthedroneguy89436 жыл бұрын
So to reduce glare on a bright, hazy day or looking into an intense sunset, rather than use an ND filter (as if they were sunglasses) it's better to use other settings such as increasing ISO or shutter speed? This is assuming very little motion in the shot. Great tip on the Histogram, so reducing exposure using the Histogram would be lowering the ISO?
@DroneFilmGuide6 жыл бұрын
You would increase shutter speed to make an image darker on a bright day (leave ISO on 100). The histogram is just a depiction of the exposure as opposed to a means of controlling it so your options for controlling exposure are ISO, shutter and NDs. Check out the ND filter video we did...that should help clear things up.
@richthedroneguy89436 жыл бұрын

the problem i have is that i want video to show that it was a sunny bright day , not cloudy looking like in the photo of the castle ( if you neglect picture of the sky that shows it wasn't cloudy so much) where it looks like sun was working on reserve power ... if you get what i mean (bride photo , where stones are different color after you fixed exposure, and i bet they were looking just like prefixed expo at that moment) ? how to get proper colors up and down? for example i did proper exposure filming and then messed video in post production just so i can have same color of sky in all of those shots, and still show that it was really sunny /watch?v=fiNoRzifpuk
@richthedroneguy89436 жыл бұрын
This is why I was asking about the ND filter. Stewart says no and I understand why, but I still have had great results using filters on sky, to bring out detail on the clouds etc.
@veselipastir6 жыл бұрын
i was using nd filter (i have just 4, 8, 16 ND , missing 32 and in summer midday it is what you need) and then if it is too much light even for 16ND only thing possible is to make shutter speed higher then 60 (if you record at 30fps) . Now in what way it messes up and affect quality of recording i don't know . Thing is , it gives you really good image but that image is far from reality as if you look trough sunglasses .
@Daddyof136 жыл бұрын
Thank you for all the information once again... Histogram now turned on..👀😉
