Radio bandswitch needs to be cleaned, Volume and tone controls with CRC or Deoxit. You should never just plug an old radio in. The inrush current with old capacitors and rectifiers can blow the transformer. You should always put a light bulb in series with the plug - that way if there is a short, the bulb will take the current and glow bright. Dial string, of course needs to be replaced. It likely needs to have all capacitors replaced for safety. Tubes need to be tested and replaced if weak. Alignment afterwards. I would date it in the late 1930s. Rebuilt many of these over the years!

@DeWittPotts5 жыл бұрын
TelcoPEI is exactly right. Also it would help if you had a variac to allow you to dial up the voltage slowly to make sure something doesn't short out. At a minimum the radio will need to be re-capped as those old electrolytic capacitors are well past their 'use by' date. I would also convert it to a 3 prong grounded plug just to be safe. Tube amplifiers are nothing to mess with if you don't know what you are doing as there can be some very high voltage involved. Once restored it will probably work very well.

Fun fact. Vacuum tubes radios and TVs use a step up transformer to supply high voltage to the plate electrode on the tubes. 300 to 400 volts is typical. Some tubes have the plate connection at the top of the tube, and early ones often were exposed. So be careful. Also, as previously mentioned, the main filter capacitor can store a charge after the radio is has been off and unplugged.

"Volume control cleaner" would be ideal, if you can still get it. I used to have a syringe type device, which screwed on the front of the control, and allowed you to flush out a noisy control without taking it apart. Fluid was injected through the bushing the shaft came out of. Worked pretty well. PD and similar services haven't used the area just above the AM band for....well, maybe 50 years or more. Radio is probably from the thirties. Definitely collectible!

Some vacuum tube radios have live chassis depending on which way the AC plug goes in the wall outlet. All metal parts are live 120 VAC. I can see one transformer so it could be a safe one. The wire coming out of the tube on the left is almost certainly hot and probably 300 - 400 VDC. Careful with that one.
@fuzzyguy2105 жыл бұрын
That tube is a 6k7 so it is a grid cap and not a plate cap. The diagram shows a power transformer but there are 2 small caps from the line cord to ground so the chassis could be hot at 120 if one of those is shorted.
@techietypex5 жыл бұрын
The power transformer is plainly visible in the videos. In a set that old I would replace all the paper capacitors and the electrolytics. The filter cap can kill the transformer, and should not be trusted. I would leave it in place, but wire modern caps under the chassis. The paper caps should all go because they can place additional load on the power supply, and they will keep the radio from working. Agree with those saying deoxit the switches and pots

Nothing wrong with the "valve" (tubes)... The filter capacitors sound like they are fine (no 60 cycle hum)... The dial CORD would need restringing... The switches need DeoxIt RED.... The tuning capacitors need some mild lubricant on the bearings (a small amount (drop) of WD40... The volume control needs a little bit of mild lubricant ...do not use tuner cleaner or a de-greaser!!! The speaker cone will be very fragile to the touch... Some 3M spray adhesive on the cone (let dry completely) will save it from falling apart... Tasman Love your comment! It's all about "i want" and 'give me" these days and for free. Some people complain about everything, know everything and give nothing. Sometimes i think comments should be turned off.

@@wysetech2000 Thanks bud, appreciate the positive feedback. I make it a life rule, ask for a favour only if I can offer one in return. If I cannot offer, I don't ask. Giving is far more rewarding than taking.

Radios that old usually have bad capacitors that short out as soon as power is applied... Amazing that one works at all.

Save the radio! It would be a nice restoration project for someone.

All the electrolytic and wax capacitors need replacing on the radio. If you don't, its likely the leakage of the capacitors will cause the tubes or worse the traansformers to burn out. It's a beautiful radio so its worth getting it done - if you don't feel confident doing it yourself anyone you know knows about rrestoring radios you might be able to get it done for the price of the components and a few bottles of beer! If you want to find out more and give it a go then look up Mr Carlson's Lab on youtube he has retored many radios and has a very clear no-nonsence approach and explains things very well.

The art deco radio is really nice looking. I agree about not gutting it. Repair and refinish.

Reinsert a new string and then tune the needle accordingl with the spring. Use not WD40 for the variable capacitor but an electronic cleaner (the thing you turned for tuning a channel). I'd first airpressure the whole thing. Take care. I am Electronician and admire this thing ... like you restore mechanic stuff. Please do not bin or trash this good old radio. cheers, Vincent.

I think by the other comments you might get the feeling there are those among us who consider old radios like VW fans consider a vintage bug. Also in order to keep that old girl making best sounds it MUST have the filter capacitor and a few others replaced. The dial cord is relatively easy fix too. Seeing as it is working parts likely would not be much if any over $20.00. Find someone to replace them & give it a quick tune up. While not stereo you wont get better sound from one (yeah my opinion 😀). If I lived close I would volunteer.

and all capacitors need replaced resistors as well with proper wattage size

Hi Mustie1, thanks for the video and I'm waiting to see if the other items you've found and bought will start to live again, saving them from the Scrap Yard. Ciao from Lido of Venezia. ☮️
