A few things I noticed about many if these games that strike me as very impressive for their time and I have to wonder why they weren't huge in the states. So far I have seen a super sharp color pallet, multi levels of parallax scrolling, real instrumentation (I think), scaling (I think), and transparencies. Remember, that last one was something even a 5th generation console struggled with. The Amiga is looking very impressive indeed.
@fungo66314 жыл бұрын
They were probably PAL exclusive. Not to mention that the Megadrive/Genesis and SNES were more popular in the states.
@MegaGasek Жыл бұрын
There was no transparency, only clever dithering. The real voice samples on Amiga sounded better than on Mega Drive but not better than on SNES. I always thought voice on Mega Drive sounded like people was underwater or drowning or coming from inside a canister.
@Sinn01007 ай бұрын
@MegaGasek I'm sorry I missed your post. It really depends on the game. The Genesis had the ability to pull off crystal clear voices. An example of this is ESwat. It's funny, the Genesis produced its best voice work in the first three years it was on the market 1989-1991. Unfortunately, once the Snes launched many 3rd party developers like Capcom did a terrible job bringing games over. As an example of how bad it was...there was absolutely no excuse for SF2SC to sound or look the way it did upon release. If you want to hear what a Genesis can really do check out the fan fix of SF2SC. The voice work is arcade perfect running on a bone stock Genesis. All it needed was the proper sound codec to work right.

I completely agree with your take on Project-X... and I had the same opinion when I was twelve and the game was new. I also didn't like Assassin and Superfrog, for the very same reasons: they all looked very clean, very sleek, but kinda empty and gameplay wise they were - you used the perfect word - insipid. They just had no sense of fun. But when I read all those positive reviews on magazines back then, I wondered if I was the crazy one. ^_^ In hindsight, it's pretty easy to trace the problem to Team 17 being born in the demo scene, and that's how most of their games felt: technical demos. One huge exception is one of my favorite multiplayer games of all time, Worms, but that was created by a different guy, Andy Davidson, and Team 17 produced and published.

I watching this again....Apidya reminds me of Insector X for the Genesis. Which itself is a very strange game as well. It was a "port" of Insector X in the arcades. Which believe it or not was a cute em' up like Phantasy Zone. Somebody at Sega said "We're not having any of this kiddy nonsense. Let's make it look edgy and cool." The only problem was the developers must have forgotten they were working on 16-bit hardware. The game looks like a 2nd generation Nes game. You should checkout Insector X if only to show that not all shmup's were gold on the Genesis. Addendem- Apidya absolutely wipes the floor with the Genesis "port" of Insector X. The title is quite accurate, these games look great (well..to be honest i find SWIV ugly, with its grey/brown hues). Gameplay wise, the biggest problem with many of these is how underpowered you feel at all times, no matter if you upgraded your weaponry or not. X-Out, Z-Out and Disposable Hero are almost unplayable. Project X isn't much better and could have used some music (wasn't it a 1 meg game after all?). Agony is interesting to look at but uninteresting as a shmup. Hybris, Battle Squadron and Apydia are very fine. I never understood why on amiga they never managed to make a shoot em up game (with a ship sprite) vertically or horizontally with several levels of paralax scrolling and this in 50 fps, don't tell me that it's due to the limitation of the amiga because if we take the example of turrican I, there is a stage where the sprite flies with its jet pack like a vertical shoot'em up, and we can clearly see the enemy sprites in the foreground + a scrolling in the background acting as scenery + a second scrolling and all in 50 fps, why the hell have some developers or programmers wanting to make a shoot'em up game never thought of taking inspiration from the technique used in the turrican I stage to create a shoot'em up game where the sprite would therefore be a ship, damn it!!!! Seeing shit with only one scroll or two sometimes, in 25 fps on some games, is really shameful on an amiga. Jim power is also a good example, in the stage where the character flies with his jet pack in horizontal shoot'em up mode on several scrollings in 50 fps, why once again has this technique never been inspired by this to create a shoot'em up game with a ship sprite?!!! Oh yes I know! ... the fault of the European know-how who did not know how to make Japanese style shoot'em up games at the time and who never had the presence of mind to think of using the techniques of the Turrican I and Jim Power stage to make a ship game so much that the Europeans were blocked and limited in their visions and creations of things on a ship game with the so-called technical limitations of the Amiga but without asking themselves the following question: "Ah? But hey?!! Look guys! In the Turrican stage 6 and 8, the character flies on several planes vertically in 50 fps, why not use this technique for a ship game that we could create (with a ship sprite therefore)?..." These idiots of Europeans never thought of it, damn it!!!! Project X is the worst shoot em up game that is too way European. I repeat again, the shoot'em up stages of Turrican I and Jim Power prove that it was possible to make a shoot'em up game (with a ship sprite therefore) on several scrolling in 50 fps.
