📜 History of the Great Northern War, Part 4
Charles XII had gone to the Ukraine hoping for supplies and reinforcements, especially from the cossacks led by Ivan Mazeppa. But Peter the Great was hot on his trail, and had no intention of letting him off that easy.

Fun detail: Peter the Great later invited the captured officers to the feast in honor of his victory, where he kept referring to Swedes as his teachers, underlining how much having his ass kicked by them helped him build the military that eventually overcame them (and, as history will show, will go on to be hugely successful for at least the nearest century). One officer replied "Well, it's a shame you have treated your teachers so badly". I really wish the war could end just there, with a chivalrous display and a joking exchange.

@orcishhorde
@orcishhorde 6 жыл бұрын
@TheDoctor364 First. If your awesome army lost to conscripts - you screwed up royally at some point(s). Wars and battles are not won just by numbers and Peter didn't win just with numbers, although this certainly was a factor. Second. This video fails to mention that after previous shameful failures on the battlefield, Peter made significant efforts to train and upgrade his military. He had several years to do that and, as history shows, his efforts paid off. Your statement has little to do with how real wars work. "Elite army" is good at winning battles but winning wars requires more than that.

Things really fell apart for the Swedes at Poltava. The main Russian army of 42.000 men crushed the Swedish army of 17.000 men. It was no easy victory. The Russians suffered 4600 casualties(11% of their army). But the Swedes suffered 9700 casualties(57% of their army), and most of what remained would surrender later. And while Russia, with its vast population, could easily recover from such losses Sweden had far more difficulty doing so. And, much like Athens after the Sicilian expeditions and the 1st French Empire after the Russian campaign, men with such experience were irreplaceable for Sweden.

And the russians were expecting an surprise attack from sweden, so they knew it they was not going to north. And don't matter if u have better troopas, better guns and better tatics, if u don't have the numbers, u are dommed. Maybe not now, not tomorrow, not in one year or five or ten, if u don' have a way to expande your army faster, you will fall eventually, just like Napoleon, just like Charles, Hitler and many others.

Without doubt the russians where many times more than the swedes in population, perhaps 5 to 10 times. But for all his brightness, Karl should have thought more carefully before starting a winter campaign. Attrition would harm him the most, as it did. And yes, i know he didnt started the war and thats why i love the part he said: " i ll never start an unjust war, i ll never end a moral defensive war before destruction falls on my enemies" or something like that :).
@axel-fu9hx

1987MartinT no, they weren't "irreplacable" the whole notion that sweden lost the war because of it's relatively small population is quite ridiciolous. At the time, about 2 million people lived in Sweden and Finland. That means, that if you were really desperate for troops you could have gotten atleast 400000 (And the war took a while so that number is larger). If you have really read up on the war, you know that Sweden's loss was attributed only (and i really mean only) to diseases, cold, starvation and exhaustion. The swedish soldiers were so well-equipped and trained that they were incredibly expensive and came at a slow rate (only about 15000 per year). All in all, sweden lost 175 thousand soldiers to nature and 25 thousand in combat. This should give you an idea of the raw stupidity in the Swedish campaign. To act like Sweden couldn't come out reasonably well even after Poltava is also quite stupid. After the battle, Charles was away from sweden for 9 whole years, and immediately when he came back he patched together a force of 60000 men. Then he was (probably) killed by Fredrik of Hessen, a swede. who then instantly ended the war. Sweden at the time was so powerful compared to Russia that it would be the equivalent of the UK winning against the US. You would need an incredibly incompetent leader who would drag on a war that only had to last a couple of years, for decades. And while he was doing that, commit so many tactical mistakes you would start to wonder how he wasn't killed by mutineers earlier.

The difference is in how the two cultures act in victory When the Swedes take a siege they feed the hungry and help the people When they invade they treat the country with respect Any territory conquered by Russia just gets drained resources and the population forced into serfdom, bled white then left as an economic ruin for centuries.
@franzluggin398

Eh, it depends. It was after all that same Sweden which was in part to blame for the horrible slaughters of the 30 Years' War, with the regions losing up to 80% of their population _conspicuously_ over there at the Baltic coast, where the Swedes staged from. It makes for a better story because Sweden in this war is clearly the underdog being bullied by two larger nations and their old rival. They made some progress, but then were thwarted at every turn thereafter. Clearly, what Sweden would have needed was a rousing speech in the locker room at half-time.

I feel that if we were to view this conflict from the perspective of comparing it’s leaders, it may serve as a great illustration for the “jack of all trades” saying. I mean, in this, as in most accounts Charles appears to be a brilliant commander, functionally undefeated in battle (let’s face it - Poltava had such a disbalance of forces that it shouldn’t really count). And at the same time Peter isn’t generally considered to be quite as outstanding at anything - even here, in Russia he is mostly remembered for the vision he had for the country and the course he set for it, not the quality of its implementation. But at the same time, war was, apparently, the only thing Charles knew, while Peter was good - not brilliant, but simply good - at many skills required of a ruler, which allowed him to win the war with barely winning any battles. An ultimate battle between a genius and a professional is won by the professional - just something I kept thinking about throughout these epiosodes.
@MuhammadSaad-yk6ij
@MuhammadSaad-yk6ij Жыл бұрын
I disagree, cuz Cgarles didn't personally command his army at Poltava. This video doesn't cover that and is perhaps misleading. Him not personally commanding his forces disoriented organization between his own generals. Charles never lost a battle against Peter when he commanded his forces directly, he was both a genius AND professional imo.

Ah, Mazeppa (also transliterated as "Mazepa"). Pushkin wrote a poem about his failed rebellion and Tchaikovsky eventually took that poem and made an opera--one of my favorites--out of it. This actually happened one time before in swedish history to Charles the IX, who is the great great grandfather of charles XII. During the Battle of Kirchholm the horse of charles IX was shot and killed. He would have been cut down by polish hussars if not for the bravery of a cavalry officer named Henrik Wrede, who dismounted and gave his horse to the king. Wrede was left behind on the battlefield, where he was massacred by the Poles.

@Papa Kim So did the Japanese. The Swedish army had this fatalistic idea of the will of god and his appointed king. If your comrade fell or if you got shot then that is fate and the will of god and nothing to worry about. Also blasphemy was punishable by death. Swedish troops were supposed to get close enough to see the whites in their enemies eyes before firing a salvo to do maximum damage. So they needed that fatalistic discipline to make up for being so few in number. They also used a lot of melee weapons and pikes for their time.

As we all know, France had to sign a treaty at the end, so they didn't got Spain. Also it would be hard to bring reinforsments and supplies to Baltic. There is no guarantee, that France would even want to help Sweds. Maybe they would just say, that Russian claim for only SPb is fine since Russia occupied more land than just SPb In 1 vs 1 battle Sweds would most likely slowly loose upper hand due to attrition. Basically in 1 vs 1 war Russians only needed time to win. From this perspective Charles attempt to finish the war as soon as possible is somewhat reasonable.
@user-mq3wo9fj6f
@user-mq3wo9fj6f 6 жыл бұрын
The war was about getting one member of the family to have aknowleged claims for both countries. That didn't happened. I think the WWI has showned how much it worth for different members of family to rule different countries (Germany and Russia). It still costs resources and man to deliver stuff to Baltic and fight in a war. After just finishing big war in Europe is kinda optimistic to expect that France would be eager to fight for just SPb.

The point stands: french dude (dont remember his name) inherited Spain, but lost claim on France. It could never (well at least without another big war with unknown result) become his domain. feast for the crows? They didn't take many casualties. Much worse was the fate for the cossacks. While the Swedish surrenders were 'invited' (forced) to party by Tsar Peter as he wished to flirt with westerners and learn their secrets, their cossack allies were massacred down to the last man. As the Swedes were forced at gunpoint to feast with their Russian captors, they could hear the screams of their cossack allies (and their entire families) in the distance.

The Swedish forces captured at Poltava go on to make Swede towns and explore China. Charles XII goes on to the Ottomans and stirs up the chaos at Bender as the corrupt Ottoman rule does not wish to pursue a costly war simply because it would drain their purses. He then retreats, bringing with him some Ottoman cuisine, to Sweden, where the war against Norway will one day rewrite history in the saddest of ways.

Chetz. You forgot to mention how Peter shows that Finland can be traversed (Swedish didn't think so due to Finland being mostly forest and with limited roads.) and takes it over for the duration of the war.

It's not that debated in Sweden. Charles had the odds stacked against him. And the privacy of the man is well known. He and only a small circle close to him even knew what was about to happen. The plans of Charles XII only Charles XII knew (that all historians agree on). So it's safe to say that he had a HUGE impact on what happened (the glorious years included). To stretch it further, he was king anointed by God.. Of course, it wasn't only him. The war machine of Sweden 1630-17something was epic. The generals were battle-hardened MFs (Renskiöld was born in a battle camp). The king was raised as a warrior king, educated to wage war. The Swedish nation back then was built on war. One can study the war and the battles in it, on a strategical and tactical level, and see for oneself what happened (especially the tactical level as it's there Charles shines the most). No questions there, only political dogmas nowadays, example socialists who always paint Charles XII as bad as they can while the right wing doing the opposite, glorified the king.

They just made the AI band together more aggressively in coalitions even at a smaller scale. It's also a nice touch that the AI's competence at diplomacy is determined by their and their advisors' DIP stats. So all it needs is a low-DIP heir and the empire crumbles. That's what happened to Germany with their second ruler, tough luck... But the best balancing decision was to throw out that pesky "player" with their OP consistent plans over multiple ruler lifespans and their almost prophetic knowledge of future events and the conditions that allow them to happen.

Well... there's a Swedish six hour movie (two parts) from 1925 called "Karl XII"/"Charles XII". It's silent, so it being Swedish may not be much of an obstacle, although I guess there are probably text boxes or somesuch. It was very big-budget for its time and featured actual regiments from the Swedish armed forces in the battle scenes. Never seen it myself, but writing about it makes me want to look it up.
