Farigiraf and Pelliper come to mind. Pelliper has been used every OU and VGC generations almost entirely because of its ability, and definitely in spite of its stats. Farigiraf has a very simple niche role to play in VGC that has won it multiple tournaments. It is also horse adjacent, which speaks volumes.

As for VGC, clefairy and smeargle definitely are on the list. For singles, Smeargle again deserves a mention, as does clefable and torkal almost solely because of one signature ability or move. Smeargle being able to know every single move, and Clefairy being able to wall so much for so many generations is insane. Torkal has finally been able to make incredible usages of its ability to not just counter rain, but establish their own team mates and lead to gouging fire getting banned is incredible. The utility it has in setting up boots + sun strategies finally being viable in the most power crept generation is something else, and it has OU viability.

"Pelliper has been used every OU and VGC gen" is such a wrong statement, it's a gen 3 mon that only started seeying use on gen 7 when it got drizzle, also it's not used solely because of ability, but also for having access to roost and u-turn, which makes it better than Politoed(in OU case), and it has access to Tailwind(in VGC case)

I used to run base Zacian with Solar Blade and a power herb for shits and giggles. Seeing Quagsire switch in just to get obliterated, and the opposing player calling me 'petty' and all sorts of other names was so hilarious that I didn't care if I lost the match 😂

I think Quagsire is being manipulated. It is likely Unaware of all of the drama in the horse community, and Smeargle has taken advantage of this. It can use moves such as Nasty Plot and Trick, after all.

Shoutouts to Lokix for being an early-game bug Pokemon that's actually good despite its mediocre stats because of Tinted Lens First Impression just hitting that hard (also Bug/Dark is a really good offensive type for it because it also gets to use STAB Sucker Punch, U-Turn, or Knock Off)

Quagsire in thumbnail? I give a like, i don't care why. And Quagsire is so good. You forgot to mention, that Quagsire can blank some Kyogre sets in gen3/4, specifically the Sub/CM variants, they normally go Surf/Thunder, and Quagsire just blanks it, which is really funny.

I wouldn't say Samurott H has low stats. 530+ stats are pretty solid. Infact, it quite heavily relies on it's stats. If Samu H had Quag level stats, it wouldn't be good at all. Samu H works because it's a very solid option with Sharpness and decent stats that would have been a decent RU or even UU mon. Ceaseless is that extra Oomph that makes it top tier in OU.

Can’t say Ambipom is even a solid choice, but I love them. Breeding it for Fake Out w/Technician+STAB+Silk Scarf was always one of my favorites to use in DPP Battle Tower runs.

Outside of the competitive format, Quagsire is also awesome: In Tera Raids, mine is my go-to choice for any fight where A) the enemy doesn't have a Grass attack, and B) Isn't immune to Ground. Mud Slap spam can completely wreck most raid bosses, and either hitting them Eerie Impulse pre-shield (for Special Attackers) or Chilling Water any time (for physical attackers) can give me enough time to really set that up. Acid Spray to support Special Attacking teammates, and she's the goodest girl. Every now and then she'll even go Tera Ground and Earthquake spam to finish off once the foe has been absolutely, completely neutered.

I love to use Tentacruel in Gen 7 UU despite it being a bit underpowered compared to something like Swampert or Empoleon. Its higher speed, access to rapid spin, toxic spikes, and haze, as well as the high status chances of scald and sludge bomb, and even the potential trapping of whirlpool if you're insane, give it great utility and role compression. Every team needs a bulky water to blanket wall things and deter physical attackers with scald's burn chance, but Tentacruel's unique utility options compared to the more traditional bulky waters of the tier make it not only very good but also really fun to pilot.

This was actually a format in Smogon’s CAP format. Creating a Pokémon with subpar stats like said Quagsire and Clefable. We created a fire fairy type named Hemogoblin, and we had to nerf it immediately! The thing was a menace to almost everything in the format.

I think two of the most iconic great pokemon with terrible stats have to be ditto and smeargle. ditto in vgc during restricted formats, and smeargle in both vgc and singles. smeargle's trait of learning every single move means that no matter how low its normal placement is, there's always a set you can find for it that gives it the tiniest of niches on less conventional teams in the highest tiers.

While not as great as the ones mentioned, Slurpuff's ability to consistently terrorize lower tiers and end up in some kind of BL without having a single stat above 90 is really impressive. Also its minor ubers niche of sticky webs+Unburden letting it effectively do one more thing before dying off is neat.

incineroar has decent attack and defense but is a staple of VGC doubles. his insane movepool gives him the right to be whatever you need on your team. need disruption? he gets fake out, and intimidate on switch. need power? flare blitz away! oh you need a niche move to randomly include that supports any other pokemon? well he gets helping hand too! seriously he's the best to ever do it.
