They LOVE children, and mine saved my life by jumping into action. All of a sudden, my calm lumbering friend became a ninja!! You nailed this review, and I don't mind all the fur, so you perfectly explained why this breed is a wonderful companion for a family.

The 'fur' can be spun & woven into beautiful things. Pyrs easy to groom if you learn proper way! Over 30yrs have always had 2 Great Pyrenees live backing wilderness. Take dog around first few days to mark territory so they know what their territory is. Great Pyrenees incredible negotiators/patrol/guard dogs. Country dog!

My Great Pyrenees/ Caucasian Ovcharka was given to me by a farmer. She is a bundle of joy. I had a Cane Corso that I had to give away due to a motorcycle accident I was not able to take care of her spending 4 months in the hospital and 2 weeks at the VA. I was given my girl for Emotional Support. She does her job. I can say to be 4 months old she is the biggest and cutest puppy I have ever had. She def stole my heart. Never had that kind of mixture so I am definitely waiting to see what kind of personality she gets. I am sure whenever I move south or southwest on a little farm or ranch to start a rescue/ rehabilitation center for GP and COs. Then would like to have them be adopted by other military vets that need that emotional support. I can say never had ptsd from the military and the accident stopped playing when I got her. No need for meds. She keeps my spirits up and my anxiety down.

Highly recommend the rescue option. I found my sweet Moon lying in the middle of the road, abandoned right after she’d been bred far too early. She is recovering and each day I see more of her beautiful personality showing through. There are so many that are abandoned: if you want to know where to look, Facebook rescues are great. There are so many pure blood Pyrs in Oklahoma and Texas that are abandoned, from puppies and young dogs to seniors, so it’s a great place to look.

We currently have a Golden Retriever (Hudson) and a Great Pyrenees (Betty). We’ve had 2 other Golden Retrievers and 1 Great Pyrenees mix also who have since passed away. Both breeds are wonderful dogs just depends on your lifestyle, home environment & what you’re looking for. Our Goldens were all Velcro dogs 😂 (super affectionate, energetic & playful). Our Pyrs were/are both more independent/stubborn, vocal, intelligent, loyal, & very loving. 4 of our 5 dogs have been pure breeds from rescues. @JayG Well first, it's sarcasm. Second, seems your family doesn't know how the Pyr/Flock thing is supposed to work. The Pyrs should be with the animals, to freely mingle and protect. And preferably brought up with the animals. A Pyr, or any other LGD that attacks what it's supposed to protect, isn't one that should be protecting them. And not only is having separate enclosures simply a bad idea. As Flying Predators obviously have nothing to worry about. But any other Predators that can get to the chickens, will have Free Reign. Still. Sounds like it's their dogs they have to worry about, not predators 😬

I'm running 3 on my farm currently in Quitman Texas. Overall theyre a good, safe live stock guardian assuming you find one not mixed, poorly brednwith bad nerves and from a good proven stock. As all Live stock guardians they come preloaded wit their own set of behaviors. Stuff you cant out "train" out of them. Roaming and digging can be a big problem, itll depend on your fencing,and if theyve imprinted to the live stock and property. For example we had close 20 goats make their way of the pen, the male went with them and made no effort of stopping them,, but he also didn't let them wonder off. He was found 10 miles down the road on their own.. the two females stayed behind, and the male went with them.. males like to patrol 0, females will stay within. Males are more independent, females are dependent, males are very stubborn,, females are easier to generally negotiate with. Males are very hard headed. Theyre not man stoppers like other live stock guardians. They'll defend agaisnt preditors, but they also will need to be harned up a hit and somewhat shown how to handle them self agaisnt a potential fight against coyotes. Do not shave them. They have a triple coat that's works well even in summers. I simply trim. Thier our coat is very corse! And it's oily. They will roll around in goat and sheep dung and look absolutely dirty, then a few hours later, they will get whote again. They also love to swim. They'll swim in man made lake we have on our property even in winter. Depending on your land and type of preditors. Don't assume a single Gp will do. I found that 2 females and a male work well. They behave different and offer different perks. I do have my dogs ears tattooed, microshipped and in summers, will wear GPS when their released in the pastures. ALLOW THEM TO BARK! AT NIGHT ITS WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN GOLD. THIS BARKINGNTHEY DO IS A CALL SIGN TO LET COYOTEES AND STRAY DOGS AND OTHER ANIMALS KNOW WHERE NOT TO COME. I RUN 3 gp for a heard of 300 on about 400macres, but we only used 100 acres at a time. We alternates pastures to prevent worms and give the grass a chance to grow.

@carlam49864 жыл бұрын
Pyrs are really independent and love to protect their property and family ( livestock, children, other house pets etc) They are good dogs but dont expect one to do all the regular dog tricks. They can learn them but they wont do them on command lol A big back yard might not be enough to keep a pyr or pyr cross from becoming bored or depressed as they have an instinct to guard. We take our big girl on hikes, long walks and car rides and give her opportunities to protect and guard us. As a first time dog owner you might want to try a lab or golden. Much easier dogs. Pyrs are wonderful but they have a mind of their own. They will run off and make the whole neighborhood theirs to guard. They also bark a lot as it's their duty is to guard and you will never and shouldn't try to convince them otherwise. They can also be aggressive towards other animals especially dogs that are not part of their pack as they are bred to chase off or even kill wolves, coyotes and other predators.

I'd love to have the Great Pyrenees! Ever since I discovered them a few years ago I've loved them! My only issue would be if I were in an apartment, because as you said it couldn't really go outside. In that case, I'd probably have a Samoyed. I've only ever been able to stroke one in real life, and that's because the owner was super impressed that I identified it as a Pyrenean rather than a Newfie! I'll definitely have to save up as I heard they're expensive, but it'll definitely be worth it!
@carlam49864 жыл бұрын
Whatever breed you decide on check the barking habits. I suspect a pyrenees could cause trouble with the neighbors. They bark if the wind blows, hearing neighbors through the walls could set them off and be really annoying. Trying to break them of the habit means preventing them from doing what they were breed to do and could make them depressed.

We have a female and she is wonderful. Definitely a great watch dog and very good with people. Agreed that Pyrenees are probably a sub-optimal choice for a pet if you live in an urban environment. In addition to being large they are also generally long haired dogs and require a certain amount of regular upkeep if you want to keep the shedding under control. As a mountain breed they are also more likely to thrive in cooler climates, or at least ones that aren't hot and humid for most of the year. When not 'on duty' as it were, they tend to be very affectionate and are usually content if they can see one or more members of the family. Pyrenees are not high strung dogs and do not require constant attention. In fact when they are not guarding their flock or family, they can be downright sluggish. Size- males 5 females 4 Loyalty- 5 Affection- 4.5 Maintenance- 3 Suitability as a working dog- 5 Suitability as an indoor pet- 2 Barker- yes Energy level- 2 Aggression level- 2.5 (Definitely defensive around flock or family but much more likely to bark than bite unless it senses an immediate threat.)

i have 3 months old great pyr, male. he is a big puppy and likes to play and snap biting. im a little worried. but he is a smart and good dog. he learns quickly and very patience. i live in a sub and a decent (not big) backyard. he always wants to go out and lay down on the grass. any advice? can he be a house pet? can he outgrow being a farm dog?

i think it’s also worth mentioning that many show breeders also get working titles in addition to show titles

I am obsessed with this breed. Videos don't do this breed justice. I absolutely love both mine. Mine are not from a working line, but they are not less able to do their job. My male absolutely love children. His favorite thing in life is meeting new children. If you are close to neighbors and don't have room for them to patrol, don't get them. They are very very loud. They are also better in pairs.

You forgot the natural nocturnal nature and the BARKING. These dogs are bred to be up all night, and bark at ANY preceived threat.

Can they be okay in a family home? I love the breed but I don’t have a bunch of land and I’d hate to get one then the dog be miserable because it’d rather be on a ranch with chickens, goats, Etc.

Best dog breed. I love them. The are worth the hair, barking etc. Best watch dog. Unconditionally love. 😊They live to go where u go. Not a dog to leave at home by itself, unless u have another dog

These dogs are fantastic. Like most working dogs, once they understand what you want and don't want from them, they are ON it. And, once they bond with you, they will die before letting anything happen to you. Yes, they are aggressive with strangers but, they are the sweetest, BIGGEST, cuddle-monsters with their friends and family.

I have an Australian shepherd Great Pyrenees mix. A guy who was breeding both accidentally had a mix litter so sent them to the shelter only a few weeks after birth. I adopted mine at exactly 2 months old. She is 4 months old now and weighs 50 pounds. She is almost as tall as my full grown American bull dog. I love the personality of my Pyrenees shepherd mix but was curious if anyone had a guess to as big she will grow to?

I live in an apartment in Columbia Falls, MT, about 20 minutes away from Glacier National Park. I like hiking and backpacking and am looking for a large, robust companion for the trails. I am looking for something with the size and temperament to take care of itself if animals wonder into our campsites (I know proper food storage helps but have personal experience waking up next to black bears...and I do mean next to....). Something robust that can take temperature extremes of mountains where weather can change in minutes, with the energy to keep up and meander close by off leash. I am not looking for something extremely higher energy or for something that is going to be constantly trying to outsmart me, like a German Shepard. I am strongly considering the Pyrenees and the Kangal...

Great Pyrenees are extremely smart and STUBBORN as someone else said in the comments my dog checks if I have treats for him before he will listen.

And they love to bark! An important trait that needs to be considered when owning one. It has been said that they bark sometimes almost nonstop as a kind of a warning to any would be predator. Even those that live in the suburbs will do this.

Is it just me or do they notice your camera and drones more than other dogs? Haha. It really feels like they clock the camera and make eye contact often. Amazing dogs.

Yes they have a really sharp eye. Mine protect our chickens from hawks. They can spot them anywhere

I was told they wouldn't do well in a house because they will want to work, not true. Our girl sees our kids as her livestock and loves nothing more than hanging out with them inside or outside. She isn't bored or anxious, she's a potato with a permanent smile on her face. Her parents were strictly working dogs and still are.

Can you discuss the difference between the Great Pyrenees and the Pyrenean Mastiff?
@demondevongirl6664 жыл бұрын
YES! 2 different breeds, but he made it sound like the same breed. He should clarify.
@DogumentaryTV4 жыл бұрын
I did not make them sound like the same breed. I never mentioned the Pyrenean Mastiff in this video. Pyrenean Mountain Dog is another name for Great Pyrenees.
@ibnBobby804 жыл бұрын
@@DogumentaryTV I never thought you made them sound the same, but I love to know the difference if you could possibly do another video for the Pyrenean Mastiff I imagine the fans would enjoy the clarification. I'm curious was it the Great Pyrenees or the Pyrenean Mastiff that was used to breed the Dogo Argentino.

Do the Hanging Tree Cowdog look at ranchworld ads in dogs, breeds too such as blue lacy and others are very good shepherds for farms.

Please make a video on 'best guard dog breeds for novice owners'.
@dombsky4 жыл бұрын
I don't think guard dogs are necessary great for novice owners; dogs can cause serious damage in the wrong hands, which results in euthanized animals.

In my dreams, id have a organic healthy safe farm, huge healthy family and friends etc. In my dream, maybe in an another life, I would have loads of animals of different species, huge dogs and the best specialise expert helpers. But as it is I am alone in a nasty area in 🇬🇧, with my little 16 year old feral cat who is like a mini micro version of your magestic pyrenees. She also alerted me to a arsen fire attack.
