My mom's friend got a Šarplaninac because she lived in a forested area with bears (in Slovenia); to keep her safe while she took a walk. I remember we once went on a walk with him, her, my mom and I, and despite it being the first time we met him, the whole walk he would instinctively go ahead of us, check if the coast was clear, then wait till we passed him and check again, over and over, till we came home. He would also very gently shoulder check any of us if we lagged behind to take a pic or something, literally herding us together at all times- he was on the clock! His shoulders were hip-height for me, and I'm not a very short person. His head was easily the size of my arm up to the elbow, if he went on hind legs he would easily reach way above my height - but he was so aware of his size and so gentle. Once he saw the owner hug us, we were automatically adopted and part of his herd forever. I don't know if he's ever taken on a bear, but he has scared wild boars and wolves away, his owner said. Absolutely amazing breed.

@robrob9050Ай бұрын
They are highly on emotional level with owner. I heard story from the guy who had sarplaninac in army as guardian dog, the dog was trained to pull his jacket sleeve and point silently in the direction of the person approaching guarded perimeter (dog trainers expected that young soldier will probably fall asleep during night) . When he went home on summer vacation and returned back his commander told him "well when you finish your conscript time you will take the dog with you, since he did not eat anything at all since you left, he was so saddened by your absence" and he took dog with him. Fierce and beautifully loyal dogs.

@ljupkadobrosavljevic8267Ай бұрын
@@robrob9050 She knows when I come from work, and waits for me in the garden. Another one comes to greet me too, and then they start to play just to show they are happy. When I was in hospital for 8 days, the third cat that ran first to greet me was the cat that rarely let me pet her. After that I noticed that whenever I go to my neighborrows or just to see something in the street, she always follows. She even maows when I pet neighborrows dogs and gives me the look. The fourth cat adores my brother, who saved her. When he is away, she is ok for 3 days and than she would stop eating. We fixed that after I started to pet her regularly in his absence. I had a cat that wasn't saved. I was away for a month and when I returned I saw her going from my garden, she didn't see me. I called her name, she immediately returned, I pet her for some time and then she was on her way. I had to explain to her before every trip I had that I will return, otherwise she would be mad at me for couple of days when I come back and wouldn't let me pet her.

YEEEEEYYYY, finally, Šarac...One of most favorite breeds in Balkan peninsula, or region. They are real angels, soft and gentle, but even with no training, they can instantly become your worst nightmare if you think of harming his flock, aka family. I have one story from my family. My fathers second wife, aka stepmom, had one. And she and her late husband went to the city one day. When they came home, they found open doors to the house, and burglar pinned to the wall, with Šaronja standing on her back feet, targeting his throat. Only when they called police, and calmed her down, she let her guard down. So, be nice to them, and they'll be nice to you. There are so many more breeds from ex Yougoslavia region, or Balkans if you will. You had croatian shepperd, Šarplaninac, Dalmatian...if would be awesome if there were even more, like tornjak, various versions of herddog (goniči, like istrian, posavski...)

imo None of the Livestock Guardian Dogs should ever be kept in city or suburb but only in the countryside where they can do the work that their thousands of years of culture and genetics demand. They are outdoor dogs that are meant to bark loudly for signaling. They are independent thinkers. Trying to curb those traits to accommodate city/town living harms these dogs.

They can look very similar, but Sarplas generally have lighter build and smaller head/muzzle. They are also healthier and their temperament is a lot better than Caucasians, in my opinion.

My earliest memories as a child are related to that breed. As a child, I became friends with my neighbor's Sarplanin dog. He was like a mountain brother and I called him the Lion because of the mane. Later, when I served in the army, we used them as guards. We used females because the males are a bit on their own. I remember one female, her name was Bela, she was incredibly intelligent.

This video made me cry. My beautiful Šarplaninac passed away earlier this year at the age of 13. He was the best boy around, he would always get so happy when I would visit back home, he was such a gentle giant, he would tolerate everything even our tiny Maltese mix jumping on him all day long and the kittens playing with his tail. He was the most loving and loyal dog I ever had and I miss him so much! I was very surprised to see this breed in this video, they’re native to Serbia and rarely kept outside of the Balkans!

My condolences on the loss of your pooch. Thirteen is quite a good long life for a large dog, so I can only assume that you gave that doggo a great life. I'm sure he'll be waiting for you at the Bridge.

Šar Mountain is located in North Macedonia and today's Republic of Kosovo! So they are not native to Serbia.
@FireGriffon4 ай бұрын
@@Jung_hatte_recht Wtf? I’m talking about my decided dog and this is the thing you’re mentioning? Really? Be ashamed of yourself! For your information the mountain range is also located in Serbia and Albania, mountains don’t care about borders, especially ones that didn’t exist prior to 1944…
@Jung_hatte_recht4 ай бұрын
@@FireGriffon There is absolutely no reason for me to be ashamed of myself! But you should be ashamed of yourself for your choice of words and for spreading misinformations! And by the way it is never embarrasing to correct misinformations. The Šar Mountain lies between North Macedonia and Kosovo and is mostly on North Macedonian territory. This dog breed is therefore mainly native to North Macedonia and Kosovo but not to Serbia.

I don't know if someone else already commented this, but some time ago you featured a Shiloh Shepherd. The beautiful Šarplaninac is in the far-background genetics of the Shiloh Shepherd breed. They were introduced to add size, heavy bone, good hips and health, and stable but courageous temperament. That is when they developed the long-haired, or "plush" variation of the Shiloh Shepherd, which can be bred in a short-coat variation, as well. After the Šarplaninac genetics were infused into the breed, they then had to get back to the upright ears, as the infusion of the Šarplaninac resulted in many flop-eared pups! What a beautiful dog, and I'm glad to see a video about one of these!

Šarplaninac ("the one of Šar mountain") is a very energetic dog, despite his size. He's incredibly well natured, a kind soul you might say and very protective. Unfortunately some owners in the Balkans and specifically in my country Bosnia keep these dogs in conditions that are not suited to their physical characteristics, i.e. they keep them in cities and urban areas but these dogs are bread for the mountain and countryside. They were specifically bread to run across large grassy areas of the Šar mountain and protect sheep from wolves, and also to withstand harsh weather conditions. As a result they don't enjoy hot climates at all and require a lot of care for their fur which grows very thick in order to protect them from the extreme cold of the mountain during winter. They can even spend the entire night outside in the snow as the temperatures plummet to well below zero degrees Celsius. Šarplaninci are awesome! ❤
