What I love about this movie is that it can be taken two ways. Either he is just a terrible person bottoming out, or it is a Catholic parable like the Good Samaritan or the Prodigal Son. He's the Bad Lieutenant who shows mercy after a life of constant sin, which costs him his life. He knew this act of redemption would have terrible consequences, but it saved his soul.

in all honesty i think that’s a rlly manipulative and cruel thing to say to ur kids, ‘if u don’t believe in god (which u can’t help btw u can grow up as christian as u want and ur mind just might not let u believe in it) then you’ll grow up to be an angry, alcoholic junkie with no hope left. basically if u don’t believe in god you’ll turn out like him. i think that’s horrible
