I wanted to scratch the Coke itch, and the Oceanographer did that beautifully. I have worn mine for a year now, almost to the day, and its accuracy is astonishing. I am in the minority, but I love the 70s tool-effect (i.e. high polish, no hacking, industrial-sounding winder) such as with my 20 year-old SKX. This is an easily-accessible, very reliable classic watch.

Something interesting is that this movement model, the 821D variation specifically, is only found in this specific watch out of all of citizens lineup. Honestly I have a feeling that it's the absolute highest end version of the 8000 series. From what I've read it's a "reinforced" 821A. But I also think they are regulating and adjusting them as my devil diver also is also +1 sec a day if that. More like +.33 a day. Wildly accurate for no good reason albeit this could be anecdotal as the sample base is only two.
@ichris20112 жыл бұрын
Mine is also scary accurate. Worn for a week straight and only off by 6 seconds at the end of that. I can’t find any information about the 821D except that it’s in this watch, which does make me think it is the highest form of the 8000 series specific to the oceanographer. I’ve got no issues with it, with the accuracy they’re giving I don’t even mind the no hacking

Regarding Bulova's brand direction - most companies have some sense of a 10 year plan. But it changes every year. Bulova squarely fits in to that. In the early 10's, the focus was going to be Accuswiss, premium lineup. By the mid 2010s, the focus was all in on the Precisionist movement. By the late 2010s, the focus was on the trend for vintage inspired design and the automatic movement. All throughout, making sure they had a heaping selection of loud and abnoxious designs as well, mostly gargantuan "designed to be noticed" watches. By 2020 it looks like "Accutron" got it's own brand to not mix things up. I figured Accutron would focus on the new electrostatic movement, plus get the Precisionist movement for their more affordable options, and these would all be available with the 1960 and newer designs, while Bulova would focus on the 1950 and earlier segment in automatic. But that's not the case. Accutron has a line of premium Americana automatics, at a very high cost. And Bulova is keeping the Precisionist. So no idea where that's going.

Great video Jody, you hit it square on. I am a life long Bulova man, starting back in the 60's in childhood. The company was slated to be more upscale when Citizen hired Greg Thunn as the CEO and created the Accu Swiss line, I own one, and it's my favorite. However, after Citizen acquired the Frederique Constant Companies they went in a different direction and Bulova was back toward the bottom of the Citizen Family hierarchy. Recently they have tried to take advantage of the Bulova History by reissuing some of the great Bulova classics with Automatic movements, some are ok, but they are not what I call good values which is what Bulova stood for in the old days, great quality and value. It is sort of like what Toyota did to GM; better quality for value, however GM never had much integrity anyway, Bulova always did. When this model came out it made me mad, cheap movement, over priced, and that name plate! UGH!. The prices on Jomashop represent what should have been the original MSRP, then you at least could have said it wasn't all that great but the price is ok, but no, Citizen wanted to cash in on the Bulova brand name. This model should tell you something about what Bulova is today, another American icon that is a vestige of itself.

Owning two HAQ models from Bulova I kind of wished they did a HAQ-version of the Oceanographer as well. Would've bought the green one immediately. Especially after having bought 25 pcs. of replacement batteries for them.

I’m a Bulova fan, I tried on the limited edition and 41 mm was a little too small for me. I heard about a un-numbered release and two things kept from picking it up: that miyota movement and that hideous logo. Not what I expected from Bulova. Shame considering the potential in their historical catalogue. Great review, good information, nice camera work!

Not sure why every one has a downer on these movemnts. Ok, no hacking, but mine doesn't stutter, is very quiet, and is accurrate to -2/+3 seconds a day, which is far better than my Tudor that cost 12 times as much. As a nice looking but inexpensive daily wear watch its difficult to criticise for the £250 it cost.

Hi Jody! There are even some newer versions of the Miyota 8 series movement that have been upgraded to have hacking. I wonder why they haven't at least used these for this watch. I don't think they are as bad. But for me the real deal killers are the diameter of 44 mm and the acrylic bezel insert. Cheers!

Divers extensions also make it easy to put over light gloves instead of the watch being pushed up by out glove and down by your jacket

Almost bought one before Christmas, but couldn't face another watch with the dog 8k movement in it - had a gorgeous Citizen NY0076-10EE titanium Promaster limited edition (as well as its little steel brother the NY0087-13EE) and that was a fantastic watch completely ruined by the fact it hissed and wobbled like a drunk snake. Sold them both last month to trade up, as I was finding I'd take them off after 30 mins due to the bloody noise. Anyhow, bought a Khaki King instead of the Devil Diver, and couldn't be happier with it.

The internal date cyclope it's really nice. I've got a Philips Watch that has the len applied on the dial's date window. And that's awesome

I have a Citizen Titanium Promaster GMT Diver (BJ7111-51M) with an internal cyclops. I think it works well.

I think this watch is a prime example of the spoiling we’ve had from Ali express spec monster watches that have $0 in their budget for R&D. The original devil diver had a dial made by singer and a case made by huguenin freres. I would imagine it’s not cheap to remake those elements today as none of them are parts available from a supplier off the shelf. I think +-$500 is perfectly reasonable for what you actually get

I like this Bulova. Its over priced At £500,but I've found it for £250 which makes more sense.Im no expert in automatic movements,so couldn't give a stuff about the miyota

I totally agree on the applied logo. Always felt it looked like crap. Random connection points and some of the letters that have a hole in it are filled. It just looks a bit too sloppy and needs some clean up either as individual letters, or, I would have been fine with a clean printed logo instead. I really wish they would have made all the devil divers in 41mm. Like most, if not all, of Bulova's vintage heritage archive reissues, I feel they just made them a little too big. I really wanted to like this one and considered getting one upon early announcements and photos. But, once out and looking at it closer, it doesn't quite hit enough good points to make it worth owning... even at gray market price of around $400.

I want a quartz version! Gasp! Could they not just drop a 262 kHz quartz in it? Scary accurate...smooth second hand sweep. What's not to love? Mechanical watches with 40 (or even 70) hours of power and their -20 to +40 accuracy (sometimes better - I know) leave me cold. Bulova has a great history of battery powered watches (214/218) and even offer quartz watches today. Call me crazy.

I would change the strap, cheap pressed clasp and cheap divers extension. A double whammy.

(Late comment) Really want this watch but the more I hear about the 8 series Miyota the more I worry. There's also the hand winding issue, apparently they don't like it and the keyless works is delicate.

Think if you like the retro watch look of this one you’ll buy it despite the cheaper movement because you just want it. I expect Bulova knew this when they put it in! Nice review. Very balanced
