In this video, we take a look at one of the main reasons so many sharks are close to shore in Southern California. We also examine a close encounter from a scientific perspective. The shark's actions may not be as alarming as I thought. In fact, it could be unique footage.

Although sharks are not the bloodthirsty killing machines we see in movies, they are also not harmless. I think the key is to accept the risk we take when we swim in the ocean and not to take unnecessary risks.

Shark being a shark is always the case. Even in feeding events involving humans. The shark is consuming a meal. The only truth that needs to sink in is that sharks KNOW the difference between humans & seals/sea lions. To think so little of their intelligence & downplay hundreds of millions of years of sensory development is foolish & disrespectful to these Apex predators.

A lot of people who get confused about how the people don't notice, when you are in clear water like this at water level in the water all you see is the sun glare reflecting and shining off the water, you don't see through and the slightest tip of a fin even if you happen to be looking in the direction of it directly on you will find hard to see with it blending in with the swaying water. It can be almost impossible to see ironically in the clearest water.

You can be 10 feet from the water and still be close to a shark. Lately here in FL, the surf has cut a very deep trench right off the beach. Step off the sand bank and you are then in 7 feet of water. Imagine how big a shark could be cruising along the edge of the beach?

Understanding sharks near shore behaviors is really not making me any less fearful. I guess there was a small chance the great white could have bloodied the young swimmer. Usually they don't because they are oblivious? So comforting! But it could have attacked I guess? Who knows? I have no idea why this would make you love sharks more.

This is the problem with these videos imo. They show them in these seemingly harmless "heartwarming" interactions and then a story breaks about someone being brutally eaten by these same creatures. Fact is they are unpredictable and we don't know what or why they attack but we do know sometimes they do.

Being a commercial fisherman in Tasmania Australia for 27 years broadened my mind. I gave surfing up but still occasionally dive for abalone and have seen many large White Pointers during the period. One in particular that the Old Boys called "Old Faithful " because it turned up every year in our location. This Shark was in excess of 30 feet. We've seen ones around 25- 30 feet out the shelf while commercial fishing. All in All... it is Their Environment.

I doubt it. I've got a book with some of the pics of Rodney fox before and after he was sewn back together. That was a large shark but small in comparison to some that roam the seas.

100%…knowledge and education is key for anything. I’m a native Californian. I went to Huntington Beach state beach each and every summer. I remember I was in the shallow coast ankle deep and felt somethung on the back of my ankle…did not break skin. I thought nothing of it at the time and kept returning summer after summer. I love the beach. Now that I’ve seen this be aware…smart of your surroundings. Hikers have wild animal encounters just be aware and alert.

I have family in HB (I'm in AZ) and I spent many summers at Bolsa Chica State Beach and my cousin and I would swim well beyond the surf line and just tread water. That was before this channel and even drones but now I wonder how close we were to white sharks, juvenile or other. 😳 🦈

I grew up n southern California I went to beaches a lot got stung by jellyfish had some fish nibble my thighs seen sea lions but the water is dirty can't see it murky water my brother got stung by sting ray at hunnington bch in shallow water never heard of any swimmer being attack in shallow water in deeper water yeah

Once paddling out, as I crested a wave and came down the back side of it, I suddenly found myself looking at a 3 feet dorsal fin cruising by just feet away in front of me. It scared the crap out of me. I turned around to take the first wave in, but I knew it had known about my presence, even as I was blissfully going over that wave towards it, and there was no way I coulda gotten away if it wanted to chomp

I used to vacation in the Florida gulf every summer. Our condo was on the 23rd floor. You could see the sharks in the water. I stopped going into the ocean years ago.

Sharks have gone through millions of years of evolution, their hunting instincts have been finely honed over time, so it's actually quite amazing that they've learnt relatively quickly to ignore human behaviour in this example. When it comes to coexisting with sharks we tend to think humans have to do all the work but it's clear from the drone footage that sharks are doing their part by being very selective over the prey they hunt.

Coming from South FL, I know sharks are everywhere. It’s amazing there aren’t more human/shark traumatic interactions. At the end of the day humans pose more of a danger to sharks, than sharks do to us.

To see them swim among us ( mostly unaware) and yet the distance themselves when coming in contact with swimmers is pretty intelligence. Facts, it’s going to happen eventually. Sharks do feed on humans if they are hungry enough and it’s an open opportunity. The GWS is an apex predator and knows exactly how its pray moves. The attack on Simon Nellist and the Russian man on Egypt show exactly that.

I think time of the day your in water, conditions of water before entering,I personally think going in ocean at dusk or at night the primal instinct of sharks are more heightened for a attack.

I was chased into shore by a shark at Bells Beach when i was 11. It popped up in the same wave i caught into shore for my escape. Bent tail mad it was🦈. My mind kept repeating, "dont look back. They say dont look back." I had some big kahoonas as a kid, and i was out at the break with the surfers. Ever since then, I've been extra mindful about what is around me in the surf. Love this channel. I have always loved sharks.

I grew up bodyboarding/surfing in SoCal and even went to Long Beach State. One day I was riding a wave at Topaz Jetty/Softtops in Redondo Beach CA. I was on my longboard and when I fell off I pushed up to get back on my board to paddle back out. As I pushed up on my board, my foot landed on something absolutely huge right beneath me. It was solid and felt smooth like whales skin but weirdly it did not move. It was frightening something so big was right under me and even more so that I was basically standing on it. It was about 3-4 feet below me. It did not move and freaked out a bit. To this day I get chills thinking about it and wished I asked Chris Lowe of CSULB about it at the city meeting where that guy got bit by a GW near Hermosa/Manhattan Beach years back.
