Great White Shark Strikes at Fish Near Surfers/Pelican Spooks Another

In this video, we examine the movements of the caudal fin and how keeping a keen eye on the cadence of the fin can provide me clues that help me capture extraordinary moments. One particular shark seemed to be on a mission as it moved along the coast. Eventually, the shark strikes at a fish just a stones throw away from surfers. The highest state of excitement, also causes this shark to be spooked by the shadow of a pelican flying by.

As I've watched your videos the last 3 or so years. I can say you've provided more learning and good will for sharks, especially great white sharks...... Than Shatk Week has in the last 15 years. The only two good bits I've seen from Shark Week are the air jaws videos, and the shark drone submarine videos. Your drone footage has proven something fundamental that I've known for over 30 years now, and many shark experts have tried to point of for over 40 years..... That sharks, especially white sharks, are always right nearby people in the water. And almost 100% of the time, couldn't be bothered with the people. They're looking for fish and rays. Not human Mcnuggets.

I was caging it with the excellent Fox Expeditions in January. On certain days the sharks had a different energy. It is fairly obvious that when in a certain mood no liberties should be taken, and the sharks move with purpose. I have a friend in Australia, Marc Payne, a long-time observer of White sharks, mainly through his professional diving and in recent years through selective Shark Week support. If you go to South Aus I would recommend you touch base with him. He is not a fan of unnatural baiting and is a good guy with huge WS experience and many theories. I know he would love your unobtrusive observations.

My god they look like torpedoes in the water when filmed from above. It's just amazing how they can turn all that mass on a dime in pursuit of their prey. We have some big one's here where i live year round on Cape Cod, MA. Each summer they grace us with their presence. And i am always awed at just how massive a 12 footer is much less seeing a 16+ footer which we also get regularly. We also have had our first Atlantic White Shark breaching. When our resident shark scientist Dr. Greg Skomal was attempting to tag one a few years ago. He was at the front of the boat on a narrow plank way and the shark just lunged straight up and out of the water at him. Totally caught him and the boat captain off guard in terms of displaying that type of behavior. And that's just it. Their is just so much we don't know yet about these magnificent animals. And probably never will. After all when you have an animal with 400 million years of evolution. Who are we as mere humans trying to understand something so ancient as that.

I'm very surprised that the shark didn't try to catch one of those rays that were swimming together. Some sharks definitely like to eat rays, especially hammerheads and I think bull and tiger sharks too.

Many millions of people hit the water every day. That surely comes to billions of unseen shark examinations/encounters every year. The number of actual bites is miniscule in comparison. We're just not used to something else being the apex predator when we're around.

It might happen, but I don't think it's inevitable. Attacks on humans are very rare. I don't think he's ever even recorded a successful attack on normal prey, which is something that must happen all the time.

I think you distracted the shark from its hunt. As you stated before they are sensitive to objects flying over and I'm sure they notice them even if they don't create a direct shadow on the animal.

So surfers just 25 yards away don't distract the shark, yet a drone flying 50 yards above does? There is absolutely no way the shark even knows the drone is above. Not only is the sound well below the ocean ambient noise, but at no point does the shark even appear distracted from its mission. Most often, the simplest explanation is correct. Its completely obvious that this is a young shark learning to hunt. It just missed. I've never mentioned they are sensitive to objects above, please don't misquote me. They are sensitive to rapid changes in light, like the pelican casting a shadow from above, seen in this very video. Implying that my drone disrupted this hunt is honestly a stretch.

I like your videos but this really is complete BS of the highest order: 'It can be hypothesized that young sharks near humans give sharks valuable experience that can demonstrate to sharks that humans are humans and that preventative methods like longlines and nets that deny sharks this ability at a young age may actually be counter-productive.' Maybe stick to the observation of these fine creatures and leave the attempts at scientific explanations to actual scientists. Or just simply say longlines and nets are killing sharks.

Your comment is an absolute statement (which plagues communications these days) to a statement I made regarding a hypothetical. There is nothing in my statement that is set in stone. It's merely a question. A hypothetical to get you to think. There is nothing wrong with that. Especially because I present it as a question. That's how science works. Your assertation that only "scientists" can ask questions makes you susceptible to being misled. There is plenty of bad science, there is plenty of good science, but let me remind you that a scientific observation/paper I published is currently ranked 75th of the 341,498 scientific papers tracked by Altmetric. Does that make me a scientist? In fact, I do have an advanced degree myself. I'm just curious, where is the line that qualifies you as a scientist?

I don't think you should be claiming 'your paper', you should always credit those involved, and this observation is clearly co-authored with an actual scientist. A scientist in my view is someone who is qualified in their particular field, at a minimum to a Masters level, often to PhD level. So, for example when engaging in discourse on sharks someone who is educated to a high level in marine science like your co-publisher, who actually has relevant education in this area.

He'll be the first one to tell you, I spend more time in the field than many scientists. Something folks like you seem to somehow find a way to discredit the importance of actually being in the field. Thanks for your explanation and for doubting my expertise in the field. I'm surrounded by some of the best scientists around in this field, and have several other research papers in current draft, and yet, it seems only non-scientists like yourself seem to be bothered by anything I ever state on a KZbin video.
