After an Injury, These Primates Will Lend a Helping Hand

Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

After a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, the simplest tasks can become daunting. At Helping Hands, capuchin monkeys are trained to help people with disabilities regain their independence and confidence. The capuchins spend between three to five years at "monkey college" where they learn simple tasks before joining up with people. This is no urban legend; these primates are making a real difference.

If you are to compare this to that scenario they would be breeding and training human children to help the disabled and abducting people to be breed into a domestic human to serve a disabled aliens 24/7. Sounds exploitative if you had a choice it would be different though , I imagine a lot of he humans they would breed would be bred smart enough to do tasks but dumb enough that they wouldn't fight back.

To those who say this is cruel - the monkeys are not mistreated, and can make the difference between the person being able to live independently or be institutionalized for life. Not everyone can afford round-the-clock human care, nor is it always available. What’s tge tradeoff? The person must go live in a nursing home where they are at the mercy of the staff. Some are nightmares. A friend who was quadriplegic has been in several. She has been sexually assaulted by staff, held captive (mail censored, phone calls observed, visitors restricted to prevent getting word of abuse out), treated like a child (undressed despite her protests, placed in bed, lights turned out at 8 pm so the staff could have a bridal shower) - unbelievable dehumanizing. Now she lives a normal life with ber capuchin and a day nurse.

Luckily in reality there arwn't any miracle drugs that give monkeys telepathy. They did work with a real service monkey organization though which was super cool
@pinkmonkeybird2644
@pinkmonkeybird2644 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this isn’t going to be a widespread program because it doesn’t work well most of the time. Pulling all their teeth and neutering them isn’t going to solve behavioral problems because monkeys are not domesticated and have so many additional needs that just cannot be met by this type of interaction. Monkeys are not toilet trained, don’t like wearing diapers, will throw excrement if given the opportunity, carry and catch many serious diseases including herpes, hepatitis, and SIV, need a very specific diet, and become aggressive and difficult after attaining sexual maturity. They don’t make good pets, and I cannot imagine leaving one alone with a vulnerable person. A leash isn’t going to prevent attack, and even small monkeys with their teeth removed can cause injury. Who is changing the monkey’s diapers in these cases? Who picks up the monkey’s mess? Who gets the monkey into a cage at night? Who provides exercise? How does the monkey enjoy any freedom? Monkeys are not recognized as service animals, so they aren’t welcome in public places. You are much better off getting a dog for your service animal. There’s far less cruelty and danger involved.

Im not saying this is wrong. Its great that disabled people can receive this help. My question is, monkeys are wild, with wild instincts. They are very trainable when young, but what happens when they reach maturity and their wild instincts kick into overdrive? They can be very destructive and violent then. I worry for the disabled when this happens. They will be defensless.
@christopherbennett5858

Yeah, I can see how that can be an issue. Especially since taking a monkey from its mother at a young age and separating it from a lot of social connections can leave the little guys psychologically traumatised.

This would make a good segment on ABC's hit show "What Would You Do?" Some restaurant server actor refuses service to a person with one of these monkeys, or some actors start making fun of someone for needing a monkey to basically eat, scratch their nose when it itches, etc. They've done disability dogs before.

Its more a partnership.if you think its slavery you clearly dont know shit about animals.trust me,if that monky wasnt willing it is more than capible of defending itself.just cause its small,smart,and people friendly dont mean its weak or defenceless.the relationship here is the same as what is between owner and cat or dog.cats and dogs adore their owners for the most part,and if something causes that to change drastically,they can and do defend themselves.there is no difference here.
