Great Big Story

Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

Finding a good recipe isn’t as simple as it should be. Photos can’t always be trusted and estimated cooking times can be a bit too optimistic for the everyday home cook. With endless options online and countless books available to buy, things can get a bit overwhelming.
In 1983 Heidi Lascelles came up with an intriguing concept, a bookstore with a small kitchen that could put cookbooks to the test. A different book would be chosen every day and recipes from that book would be cooked and served for lunch in-store. Regular customer Eric Treuille would frequent the shop hoping to get the attention of a charming staff member named Rosie and before he knew it, they would eventually take over running the store together.
Eric has been in the business long enough to know what makes a book special. Having cooked hundreds of recipes from different cuisines, tell him what you're looking for and he’ll be able to recommend the right book in a heartbeat. If you don’t know what you want, that’s not a problem either! Drop in for lunch and you might get to try something that surprises you, but… only if you stick to Eric’s rules…

It’s not that French servers go out of their way to be rude, it’s that they don’t have the toxic “service with a smile!” culture of North America which leads many North Americans to label French waiters as rude when they don’t deliver entrées with contrived delight. They’re also not at one’s beck and call, they come when they’re ready, and will in fact ignore customers who put themselves forward in such a capacity, the same way one might put a particularly impertinent child in its place by ignoring it until it has learned propriety. It’s a different culture that’s honestly a lot more sincere, to say nothing of healthier for the waiters, who are not pressured to smile through a bad day if they’re having one.

This is an amazing concept. One of the things I dislike most about going to a restaurant I've never been to is choosing something on the menu. It's nice to have someone who's as knowledgeable as the chef choosing for the customers. I'm sure the food tastes amazing!

It's kind of a thing in Japan, some cheap diners you can find around neighborhoods will either serve you one specific food they can make or whatever is that day's "special". Most of these small diners are as good as it can be with its cheap price, but sometimes you can find a hidden gem.
