Greatest Hits Packaging Rant

All the major consoles have done it over the past few console lifecycles. They decide that some games should ge repackaged after selling through a shitload and then suddenly they make them look like absolute ass. it's just one of those things ive hated since psone with the ugly ass lime green labeling, and it continues today lol

I'm probably in the minority with this, but I actually really like when game cases are a different color. I think it makes my collection have a more varied look. However, you definitely did do a good job explaining your point and I can see where you're coming from.

The worst part is that most of the time, these Greatest Hit versions, with their (in most people's opinion, ugly) packaging, often have better versions of the games packaged in. So if you want a bugfixed/tweaked version of that game, you HAVE to deal with the ugly case and CD.

Alpha, to be honest I like more the green label rather than the black one on PS1 games, but for PS2 and PS3 I like more the black rather than the red. Also I hate the red boxes for PS3 greatest hits games, I like the transparent ones..

Personally, I don't mind the red "greatest hits" because the contrast between the red and actual cover art is a bit appealing, but I definitely don't appreciate the words "greatest hits" plastered on with it and how the spines stick out awkwardly, as you mentioned, from the black and clear ps2/3 games. But I absolutely can't stand the GameCube, Wii or PS1 greatest hits labels, Ps2/3 is bearable for me. I don't like seeing varying colors across spines, just as you mentioned, but for the GameCube/Wii/PS1/Xbox greatest hits labels, they're just horrendous to even look at on an individual case.

I HATE all the 'essentials/playstation hits/shitty labeled' covers. Like seriously I only have a few of 'em because I got 'em when I bought my PS3 (in a cheap bundle). Went a few times to some shops that buy games and asked the assistant if I could exchange 'em for the good looking ones but they always denied. I'd rather pay slightly more just to have my game look how it's supposed to look like rather that one looking as if it was saying 'hey! I'm a rip-off looking game! how do you like it?'

The ps3 boxes are so ugly. The actual cover art is the size of a fly shit while the red borders are massive and it really just screams 'look at me I'm ugly' whenever the corner of your eye gets a glimpse of it. I rather own a digital copy than that bs case.

I actually hate the stupid greatest hits labels. Out of my entire collection I only own 2 greatest hits games on any of my systems which sadly were Army Of Two and the sequel The 40th Day on ps3. Got them for Christmas but if I can get a copy of the black labels or non greatest hits versions of any game, I will jump on it. If it's 10 dollars more for a non greatest hits copy, be it but I can not stand seeing the butt ugly greatest hits packaging anywhere on my game shelf.

the two games I have are Uncharted DF and GTA San Andreas for PS2. I think red looks ugly on PS3 cases but I kinda like the ps2 cases. Not better than the original black labels, but still look cool

In Europe we have "Platinum" instead of "Greatest Hits", but the concept is the same and I hate those covers. So much in fact, that if I find a used games that I have actually been looking for.... I don't pick it up, cuz I don't want Platinum's in my collection. Especially since platinum games don't have any picture on the disk, no, it's all blank with just the name of the game.

At least with the Gamecube, and Ps2, boxes if you wanted to, and it bugged you a fuck ton, you could go to the Cover Project and print out the black label cover stick it on top of your greatest hits cover and put it on your self and call it a day, but you cant fix it when the whole case is a different color, like the ps3 red boxes. im surprised you didn't mention "New Super Mario Bros Wii" the only wii game to have a red case.

Doesn't bother me too much. I like that my favorite game is considered a greatest hit. Seeing the differing label colors looks kinda cool, like idk... I'm not too big on symmetry or stuff like that, it feels homely.

I'll admit, I can ignore the Player's Choice on GameCube and the red label on PS2, but every other Greatest Hits label I completely agree with you on. They're fucking ugly as all fuck. The only reason I can ignore the red label on PS2 games is because I grew up with the PS2 (I'm 17), and as a kid I didn't really give a fuck, all that mattered was that I had the game. It is fucking ugly, but I can get past the PS2 and GCN ones. I've recently started collecting games again and I'm trying to stay away from red labels and green labels. I have 39 PS2 games and only about 8 of them are red label, and it was only because I got a lot of the games as gifts (Christmases over the years), and I have green label Gran Turismo and Gran Turismo 2, but I've been looking for black labels of those games. So yeah, Greatest Hits labels are downright fucking ugly, and though I try to stay away from them on any consoles, I can live with the GCN and PS2 ones. Fucking shoot me. Still, great video Alpha.

PS2 red labels aren't that bad to me because It's not like the PS1 bright neon glow in the dark visible from anywhere in the Universe green and the red on PS3 I can sort of deal with except for my OCD kicking in when I see clear, clear, clear, clear, red, I mean couldn't they make it like a clear with a red tint?

I hate greatest hits also. However now in days original black label games are coming out incomplete with bugs and without DLC content. Not to mention games are coming out without their booklet which makes it bad in the first place. The industry is now paying less attention to packaging as they slowly migrate to digital. As much as I hate this reality I am starting worry more about having the better version of the game for less in the greatest hit version and not have to worry about overcharged DLC content for the black label games. Sooner or later we won't even have physical game copies to worry about their case and packaging art. If you think about it, that's the same thing that happened to PC games.

I have specifically not bought games that I've always wanted just because of the greatest hits label. I consider myself incredibly picky when it comes to buying games. So much that I expect any game that I buy to be really good to near mint condition, with as little blemishes as possible, and I absolutely refuse to have any greatest hits labels on my games. I understand your frustration! I collect the same way. Alphabetical order, shelved, and in pristine complete condition. those ugly labels are and eyesore. So, You know what I've done? I decided to separate all budget titles in my collection from the regular titles. so I don't have red, green, silver, or whatever ugly spines sticking out randomly throughout my titles. at the end of my PS2 Black label collection, I have a red greatest hits collection. (and so on.)

I didn't mind until recently, because it was only the lables. Ever since I got a 360, I now order a lot of used games online and it pisses me off it the game is a special edition game with that awkward grey case, it's not bad but it just doesn't look pleasing at all with all the green cases. Well, just like you i am not fond of greatest hits label, but not to your extent lol. I mean i prefer the normal version if i can get it, but if the GI version has more content, or is way cheaper(in case of a rare ps1 game for exemple) then ill go with it. My copy of RE1 on PS1 is greatest hits... always had that version... also same for my MK trilogy... i accepted it... but yeah they do stand out on the shelve... but oh well... lol

Except for the positive side of the Greatest Hits Green/Red Label version, some games not all games though do have some programming improvements such as improved graphics and bugs and glitches fixed that existed in the original Black Label version. Other than that, don't expect extra levels, new weapons, cosmetic skins to be added to the Greatest Hits Green/Red Label version.

It doesn't bother me because I came up with a solution. I separate all of my GH versions from the black label. I just think you kind of need them to have a complete game collection so. What really gets me though are STICKERS. THOSE NASTY FUCKING STICKERS THAT GAME STOP SLAPS ON THEIR GAMES or thrift shops or whatever. Especially on boxed nintendo games. Do a video about nasty stickers.
