I remember seeing this on the rental rack at blockbuster for years when blockbuster was a thing… I never forgot what the cover looked like or even the name. Ghost in the shells impact goes beyond just an enjoyable anime, it’s left an impression on the world beyond its own.

GITS_SAC is THE greatest anime series of all time. I will hold that opinion to my grave. It opened up my brain to SOOOO many concepts of life and the human experience. No one has done it like that show since.

This movie instrumental in the direction my life has taken. I think I first watched it when I was 19 or 20, and was unsure about the direction I wanted to take my education and future career. It was this movie and 2001; A Space Odyssey that pushed me into the IT field. I know that I also picked up on the elements of transcendental fusion between man and machine. One of the themes that I really appreciate in both the movie and the franchise at large is the element of self and it’s reflection. Throughout the movie, the Major is often reflected in mirrored surfaces, often during scenes where abstract concepts of identity and reality are being discussed. I’ve always felt that these visual set pieces are indicative of her internal struggle to reconcile her existential fears at not being a real, genuine person. She understands that reflection is able to be distorted by physically manipulation and self-delusion. The line “What we see now is but a dim image in a mirror. Then we shall see face to face.” and her apotheosis with the Puppet Master can be seen as a rejection of worldly information similar to Plato’s allegory of the cave. But the theme of reflection can be taken a step further outside the work to meta narrative levels: As you mentioned the work itself tries to present it themes as neutrally as possible, so as to not distort ones own “reflection” on the ideas presented. Great video! I can’t wait to see what other movies you will cover in this series. I hope you cover the rest of the Ghost in the Shell franchise someday.

Yeah this little scene about the driver holds so much meaning and implications about life and the soul and what it means to be human. this concept is bone chilling and really brings up existential question. There's a quest line in the game cyberpunk 2077 that's also based on this concept and it was one of the most frightening and horrific quests of the entire game just because the thought that someone could temper with your memories and therefore change you and your personality is crazy. concepts like these really go under my skin.

I fortunately saw Ghost in the Shell in more recent years so I was able to understand the philosophical concepts and ideas much more easily than if I had watched it at a younger age, and thank god for that lol. This was easily one of the most profound and important animated films of all time, and it's themes about technology, AI, and the nature of consciousness/soul are becoming more and more relevant today. I highly recommend watching the sequel to this movie, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. While not as well known as its predecessor, it is still an incredible and artistically beautiful film, with just as much emphasis on the same philosophical films as the original. It also has crazy moments similar to that of the garbage man with the manipulation of his memories, and imo is much more relevant than the original film was in its approach to examining how technology affects people. And of course, if you're going back to the old classic anime films, you can't ignore Akira. Definitely check out the movie and manga as well if you haven't yet!

I always associated the Ghost as a soul- that reflection of one's self and own being. As for the puppet master wondering if he himself has one..id easily say yes...even though its unheard of by Section 6 or anyone encountering him.

GitS is one of the greatest sci-fi-franchises ever, not only imagining exiting and plausible technology, but also how that technology would effect humanity, both on a social and spiritual level. Now, a lot of sci-fi does this, but GitS is a very interesting example of collaborative storytelling. Nightow's manga created a very solid framework that all of the spinoffs and adaptations are deeply connected to, and the truly excellent adaptations (like the 95-movie or SAC) use this framework to explore their own ideas while still maintaining the "ghost" of the original. (The only adaptation I would call bad is the live-action movie, as it simplifies these ideas to the degree that it looses that "ghost", but even that at least looks cool.) Now, there is fierce debate among fans if one version of GitS is "better" than any other, but personally I think the manga, the 95-film and SAC all share the spotlight. Without the manga, non of the others would exist, and it still might have the best balance of action, brainy sci-fi-ideas and humor out of all the GitS, as all other versions are far more serious and dour at different levels. I've heard plenty of people finding the 95-movie fascinating philosophically, but far too slow and having a hard time relating to The Major (as 95-Kusanagi is easily the most dour and humorless version of the character). SAC is in many ways a nice middle ground, with both more levity (both from the main cast and the Tachikoma) than the 95-film, more focus on getting to know Section 9, more references to philosophy, history and literature, as well as some fascinating contemplations on the effects of technology on the human psyche and civilization that seem frightingly prophetic when viewed today. It was really interesting hearing your thoughts on the 95-film, and I would love to hear you talk about more of the franchise.

I adore this film, the animation, art direction, themes, concepts and music is unbelievable. But I do believe the GITS_SAC series (season 1 and 2) is the best iteration of Shirow Masamune's manga. Not saying it's a good manga adaptation because there's none yet but it is the best overal product, it takes certain concepts and themes of the manga and makes its own thing. In my opinion is the best anime series ever made. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it one day.

One small thing I like about the scene where the major goes diving is, that the movements she makes under water mimics the movements the cyborg body is doing while it's constructed in the intro. The scene with the garbage man is to me also one of the most memorable scene, it's also the scene that showcases best why the Scarlett Johansson movie failed.

I remember choosing between Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell way back in 96; it was my very 1st anime I ever bought! Looking back, it was a hard choice to make, but being a Masamune Shirow fan, I had too! The art direction, existentialism and haunting soundtrack will always follow me everywhere!

Very similar experience to you, around 8 or 9 when I'd go to videotron(like blockbuster) and found the coveted single section with anime movies. The movie was fucking amazing, I recognized that, and it didn't terrify me like the end of Akira did lol. But even back then I was heavily aware of the fact that I couldn't understand what it meant. Definitely one of the classics, should never be forgotten because of its relevance to our lives in this day and age.

oh yea. Similar age I seen it too. Around '98 I think I first seen the King of my castle vid on VIVA and later on I got my hands on the real deal. I have watched this movie several times and there is something about it that feel impenetrable from a critical viewpoint. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime or the manga itself = legendary (best anime/manga of all time, well, Battle Angel Alita, as well too, with maybe a few others like Berserk, Claymore, and etc) ----------- the KRAP stuff: the ghost in the shell animated movies are krap, aside from their revolutionary animation/graphics (especially for their time) the ghost in the shell hollywood movie: even bigger pile of krap... solid state society... if this was an actual anime series, maybe it'd be good, but it's not, it's just a single episode/OVA, a failed attempt at rebooting the series... maybe they had planned on it being a series, but it fell apart, meh, I don't know the history/story behind what happened with it... (too lazy to try to look up) ------- Arise 1-4 is pretty good, and while motoko's design isn't bad, there's no replacement for Stand Alone Complex motoko design, not ever, lol ghost in the shell: SAC 2045, actually isn't too bad either, it's pretty good actually, but still not as good as GitS:SAC, and it's also, just different too, you get used to and/or like the new animation/3D, or you don't, meh ------- GitS:SAC anime / GitS manga and Battle Angel Alita manga/OVA-movie-film/hollywood-movie are the two equal legendary sci-fi manga/anime (and... /hollywood-movie, for Alita) both are incredibly deep and advanced and actually realistic-science sci-fi manga/anime

here's some: (fantasy only as you said favorite, but I'll also include some short fantasy anime too, if its good) (not ranked, just listed) 1. Full Metal Alchemist (mostly fantasy, as the "alchemy" in this, is MAGIC, despite what ed says, there's no science in this at all, aside from the tanks/armaments and like stuff, lol) 2. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (mostly fantasy, as the "alchemy" in this, is MAGIC, despite what ed says, there's no science in this at all, aside from the tanks/armaments and like stuff, lol) 3. Bleach 4. Naruto 5. One Piece 6. Fairy Tail 7. Berserk 8. Claymore 9. Goblin Slayer 10. Demon Slayer 11. Trinity Blood (fantasy/magic + sci-fi/technology), NOT to be confused with Trinity Seven! 12. Wolf's Rain (the setting is more sci-fi: dystopia, but this is truly a unique work, fantasy+sci-fi: magical super wolves, magi-tek warriors, magical spells, star-traveling nobles, humanity on the brink of extinction, and the flower maidens artificial beings, and "Paradise", the power of time-dimensional controlling-distorting-condensing of the entire world and/or creating anything that you want, "wish-granting", a truly unique story, nothing else like it exists in all of literature) 13. Soul Eater 14. The Sacred Blacksmith (JP: Seiken no Blacksmith) 15. Lord Marksman and Vanadis (JP: Madan no Ou to Vanadis) 16. Konosuba (shortened JP title) 17. Log Horizon (I've not watched it yet, but it seems to be popular and good) 18. Jyu Oh Sei: Planet of the Beast King (more sci-fi, but also feels like a fantasy too, a really good hidden gem, and one of the few "survival" anime) 19. Highschool DxD (+New, +Born, +Hero) 20. Hundred (might not be truly "fantasy" as its a bit more sci-fi-ish, but it does have elements of fantasy in it too, has a fantasy feel to it, and not much of a sci-fi feel to it, even though I said it is a bit more sci-fi-ish than it is a fantasy, lol) 21. Eureka 7 22. SCRYED 23. The Testament of Sister New Devil (JP: Shinmai Maou no Testament) 24. Rosario+Vampire 25. El Cazador: The Witch Hunter (JP: El Cazador de la Bruja) 26. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann ("Gurren Lagann" for short) 27. DanMachi (shortened JP title) (US: is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon) 28. Queen's Blade 29. Seven Deadly Sins (this is the popular adventure fantasy anime with melodias) 30. Magi 31. Akame Ga Kill 32. A Lull in the Sea 33. How Not to Summon a Demon Lord 34. Overlord 35. Grimoire of Zero 36. Blue Exorcist 37. Fate (huge series/franchise) // also has sci-fi too (depends on the time periods within it, lol) 38. Little Witch Academia
