I have an RME HDSPe RayDAT that I use with an Antelope Audio Orion 32 and the RME is awesome. I went this route because my motherboard didn't support Thunderbolt, but get the speed of Thunderbolt because of the PCIe connection. Looking back, I wish I would have gotten the MADI card but the Orion 32 wasn't on my radar at the time. The RME card makes my life so much easier, great piece off equipment. I thought about the UFX, but decided the connection speed of PCIe card would be a smarter choice for me.

I have managed with it, but the driver support is flakey already on Windows 7 x64 (beta drivers) and there's some stupid issues with how it deals with sample rate changes... the mixer is also quite limited. I've been planning on moving to RME for the longest time, but they're pricey even used... but I got a great deal on FF800 and i'm sure i'll be really happy with it :) I've heard so much good of their drivers and every RME device i've ever used has worked flawlessly every time... so i was sold. Hi Glenn! Hope you're doing marvellously w... wait, that's not my line. Anyway. I actually ended up buying one of these a while after watching this video. And I'm really glad I did, it is an absolute gem of an audio interface. I do a lot of overdubs, so to monitor with zero latency while tracking makes things so much easier. And the capacity of this interface is very, very impressive. For years I have been using Pro Tools HD Native, with an HD Native card, and a Lynx Aurora 16 as the interface. I do still run my preamps through the Aurora via MADI on the UFX+. But also, this sparked even more changes in my home studio. I figured "In for a penny, in for a pound". So I also made a switch I've been wanting to do for years; from a Mac Pro to building a new Windows PC (I've always preferred Windows. I absolutely LOATHE MacOS.), AND I made the switch from Pro Tools HD to Reaper. Yup. I finally did it. I escaped the maximum security prison that is Avid. This last part was because, economically, Avid did not make sense for me anymore. The yearly cost of subscribing to updates was just too high. And if you don't subscribe and want to "get back in", the penalty is you have to pay almost double. Well, that was the last straw for me. Enough. So there have been some major changes in my little home studio. A new kick ass interface, switching from a Mac to a Windows PC, and also from Pro Tools to Reaper has been a liberating experience. It almost feels like I've gone through some sort of cleansing process. Making music now feels more effortless - and I think that is quite an important thing. Thanks a lot for your brilliant channel and no-nonsense-content. And sorry for the long comment! Have a good one Glenn!

Hey, nice to hear of your liberating experience. I am looking to move from Mac to PC and from UA Apollo Thunderbolt to RME UFX+ and also from NS10 to Genelec. How is your setup working out? Any issues with windows? I'm trying to choose between this interface and antelope audio or lynx products.

Hey Glenn, you've never gone into depth on how you record and mix keyboards. Can you explain how you would tackle it? It's really tricky considering they are usually recorded in stereo so you can't just layer a bunch of them or else you'll drown the mix. How do you mix them against the rest of the instruments?
@KohuGaly7 жыл бұрын
the trick to recording and mixing keyboards is to build perfect the arrangement loong before you hit the record button. That include picking the sounds and when they are used in the song. Their positions in the stereo field, when they should pop into front or fall to the background, how should they layer - DETAILED MAPS!!! Record midi beforehand and when everything is ready, plug them in and hit record.
@BestUsernameIGot7 жыл бұрын
I can second the arrangement idea. Sometimes you just have to change the chord shapes, move up an octave etc. so it sits right in the mix. Keyboards often occupy the same range of frequencies as guitar so it can sound muddy when layered together. Simply changing the chord shapes can make a dramatic difference.
@KohuGaly7 жыл бұрын
+Deathrape2001 So if the guy asked me "how do I cook a soup?" is it so far fetched to answer "make sure you have the correct ingredients before you start throwing them into the pot." ? Because to me, not having your soup recipe planed out before you start seems like the most common way to fail. That is especially true for keyboards in metal. Metal musicians rarely think about what the keyboards should be doing, which is why they often sound shit - not playing things that are missing and playing things that can easily be left out, because guitar already plays them. Mixing a well-written keyboard part is literally just pushing the volume fader up and automating it if necessary. Mixing a badly written keyboard part consists of using the mute button so that you can hear the rest of stuff better.

Deathrape is in that stage where he's been around a bit, playing in bands or maybe recording with friends for awhile, and the sophomoric music elitism of run of the mill high school rebellion has grown into the artistic pretension their 20's. Yawn. We all went through it at one point and then we actually got a clue as soon as we worked a day in the real world. He's just reciting the same shit he and his buddies talk about while drinking & smoking bud every weekend in an abandoned lot, or more likely behind a 7-11, without a girl in sight, as they listen to *real music* and get all worked up over all the posers in Shittown, Iowa where they live. Hey Glen, I am a Mac person for the last 10 years so when I came to chose an interface RME was out because they don't do thunderbolt. I definitely saw many good reviews/impressions around the net on the stability and quality of the RME's. I went to the dark side with UAD :-) and I now have 2 x Apollo 8 which I love and they have been rock solid for the last year with my 2012 Macbook Pro and Logic X. I think it's great when the recording equipment just works and gets out of the way so you are thinking about the key change in the bridge and not about technical issues.

+Terry Doyle the ufx is thunderbolt compatible
@terrydoylemusic7 жыл бұрын
So it is! I'm well committed to UAD plugins at this stage anyway. One thing to note about Thunderbolt, any Thunderbolt device should have *two* ports to allow daisy chaining to properly benefit from the Thunderbolt bandwidth. If it only has one it kinda ignores this and makes you put it last on that leg of the chain. This is a big oversight. I saw another device a couple of weeks ago and it has the same deal and I thought wow .. way to kill the utility of Thunderbolt chaining!

Glenn, I´ve recently (like 2 weeks ago) bought a Babyface pro over a UAD because its stability, support and capability. I'm really happy about the results I'm getting, specially when compared with my old Edirol FA-66. RME sounds "high end", there's something about the clarity that is awesome. BUT (there's also a but, or butt... hopefully not mine) Totalmix is far from intuitive. I'm still taking baby steps about all routing, mix, cues, and features that are offered. Still, no regrets, I'm super happy. And you, my friend, is trying to kill me with GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). I'm dying to buy the Adams and after your last video I'm probably going to do it. If I may ask you, do a tutorial on the totalmix, RME vids are "not great" and you are an excellent teacher.

I replaced my seven year old rme fireface uc against a brand new lynx aurora (n) 16 channel usb. has cost me a lot of money. but the difference is so clearly audible. that could even hear my mother. the depth and the clarity is incredibly good. I would be interested in how great, and whether that is the difference between the two converters. from the uc, which is already older, to the auroa it is real worlds. almost as from mono to stereo. nearly. from ufx + probably not so far away. the drivers of rme are unbeatable. because I am curious whether lynx can keep up. windows 7 computer. until now everything is good. but the rme stuff is basically very very good. good choice. unfortunately i live in germany. close to thomann. otherwise we could make a comparison :) all the best to you. stay as you are and many greetings from nuremberg

Have you compared it to the UA Apollo line? People seem to go nuts over it's onboard FX and quality but the drawback is it takes a mobo that supports Thunderbolt, I think , or an investment in a TB card...I had the quad version for 2 days before deciding to send it back and go a big step down pricewise with a Focusrite box.
@chatter76537 жыл бұрын
Well by that logic, you could also argue RME is 'wildly overpriced', if you were to compare it to ,say, the Focusrite 2i2 box. Both sound good, one simply has more inputs than the other.

I have a Mackie onyx desk with a FireWire Interface. I mostly use it at 44.1/16 doing demos and live tracking, but I can crank it to 96/24 I have some latency issues when multi tracking, but I'm still using a old license for Cubase 3sx on an old HP workstation running XP. I can't mix down through it, but I do direct monitoring for vocals and I throw some reverb in the monitors for the vocalist when doing vocal takes. I have an old Motu 828 and Behringer 828 I'm about to chip / cap upgrade which has none of the latency issues the Mackie seems to have I use a chipped Tascam US122 for portable tracking, and a Blue Spark Digital for voiceover work
@Mtaalas7 жыл бұрын
It's all driver and hardware with the latency. Firewire is superior to USB in this application for the simple fact that it can access computer memory directly without CPU's involvement and doesn't share the bus with any other device. But if your FIreWire chipset on the device is of low quality or the drivers aren't up to snuff, you can throw away the latency. I have MOTU interfaces too and they're rock solid and I have 0 issues with latency. Had to source a specific firewire addin card though to make sure there are no issues. RME's are expensive since they care about this stuff and they go to great lengths (as do MOTU) to make sure you can run on low latency. And that's something one can pay extra for any day of the week, since so few interface manufacturers can do that. :)

It is really annoying and so is certain things like lack of support for old OS's like if I want to use my firewire interfaces I am stuck with Win7 which means I cant upgrade any hardware because all the new processors dont support Win7.
@machine-madedog50597 жыл бұрын
LateNightMusicZombie Because at one time most recording software was either MacOS exclusive or was native to the platform. When I got into recording back in 2000 that was very much the case, especially in Amurka. The primary PC-based DAW that was used professionally was Nuendo and that was mostly in Europe. Luckily the game has changed ALOT since then and Apple doesn’t have as much market share as they did back in the day. Also DAWs, interfaces, and outboard gear are quite a bit more modular and less proprietary now. Gear-wise in my opinion it’s a great time to be a recording engineer. Business wise? That’s another topic..

Windows 10 Supports Thunderbolt 3 very well. And RME has the same quality Thunderbolt drivers as for the HDSPe (PCIe) cards, because Thunderbolt=PCIe(+Displayport). And the adapters from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 are also affordable now.

good point glenn, if it works DONT FIX IT, and in this case it is not a any pc, since I imagine it has tons of plugins, adds, saved configurations, presets and maybe some lost gem in the time, which when doing a clean install to win 10 would have to reconfigure everything, reinstall the drivers, fight with the compatibility of some software or a plugin and make bigger the bag of bile to see that leaves ravages with the drivers of an interface or to restart the computer for some update, which may break the os in summary, sounds tempting, but to be able to migrate from one s.o to another and without losing anything you have to throw like a week or more to leave everything tight and well set and in the case of a study is even worse, since you have to migrate tons of data to servers or backup disks, and that depends on the connection (usb 3 or 2, ethernet or dial up or smoke signals lol ) and then do the reverse, pass your backup to the pc which can consume hours of productivity that having bad practice of backups or null practice of backups, do'hu having a good habit of backups can reduce the time spent in ensuring that nothing is lost during the process, but still have to do a backup, so it comes out the same shit

Spot on... the windows 7 has been steady as a rock and I've had zero issues with it after running ~11 years straight on my main computer. Windows 10 on the other hand is constantly told to lock up, refuse to boot or give some errors after an update that you can't refuse... many of these problems aren't just anecdotal single cases even but affect a lots of users and they come in waves of certain updates. Before they get their shit together, I stay on 7. At least I can trust it working tomorrow, and day after that... and after that...

Great to hear about RME's driver quality. I'm half-considering buying one of their lower-end models and selling this Audient id22 and getting rid of its crap drivers. Talk about software ruining a perfectly-good product, sheesh.

As of 2024, I believe that this is RME's product that is the most cost-effective(?) among professional grade products. However, it is unfortunate that Steadyclock is not Steadyclock FS.

Now all RME has to do is to release a affordabel 2 channel interface. Even the Babyface Pro with its 4 Ins costs 750 € (880 $)

Yes I understand, which means its overkill for most home studio owners. There is a reason most people buy 1 or 2 channel interfaces.

For 2000 Stones this thing hopefully can also do the dishes and dispense a mean brew. :P What i do not get is how those 94 IN and OUTs supposed to physically work. Is there some sort of a fan out cable where you can plug those 94 Microphones/Instruments in?
@khronscave7 жыл бұрын
64 of those are MADI (which, for us "pedestrians", are near-useless, and might as well be there just to inflate the numbers)...
@KohuGaly7 жыл бұрын
simple. What it means is that 94 channels of digital audio can pass through that box into your computer at the same time. Most of these mid-to-high-end recording interfaces have a cable/optofiber connector in the back that lets you attach one to another and gain additional channels that way. The benefit of doing this is a) you use a single driver on your computer to stream all data. That means less stuff to go wrong... b) your converters end up synced up by a single clock. If you would connect multiple devices each with its own internal clock, they will not have the exact same sampling frequency. After a while they will drift a couple of samples here and there. Best case scenario, you get glitches as your driver tries to sync them up by adding gaps to the slower streams or cutting frames from faster stream. Worse case scenario, blue screen of death...
@khronscave7 жыл бұрын
Most (if not all) DAWs will only let you use ONE interface / driver at a time anyway. Digital clocking / syncing is an entirely separate issue though (imho). PS: If you were too lazy to google it, this is how RME end up at 94 channels: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MADI

MOTU is right up there with RME that makes very much the same products esp the high end AVB line up. What MOTU and RME has in common is reliability, stable drivers and long term driver support for products that are 15+ years old. What sets MOTU apart from RME is the competitive price point you get for a quality product making RME overpriced. Plus MOTU is using the latest ESS Sabre 32bit DAC technology found in Apogee products which is killer. I own a Motu 828ES comming from many Focusrite interfaces and can tell you it's one of the most rock solid reliable interfaces I've own. The drivers for Windows 10 was very well written very low latency.

For a general rule, any guitar can do metal (high gain) with humbuckers. It doesn't really matter on the shape of the guitar or wood used (as much as pickups).

Hey Glenn, i have to agree with your review that the RME stuff is pretty great all around. But when i first started out recording i bought the small RME Fireface UC interface and used it to record mobile. That means that i had to move back and forth a lot with my laptop and my interface, connect and disconnect everything for a lot of time. That's what it was made for. One day the USB port broke of the board. It was directly soldered to it, there was no screw or anything else, that hold it to the case. In my opinion that's a predetermined breaking point. So i contacted RME on the forum and asked for repair, because i still had warranty and did nothing wrong in my opinion, because i used the interface like intended. Those Support guys there where the biggest dicks you could imagine and told me basically that it was all my fault and that i had to pay for the repair. I was in the middle of an album production and i had no other choice but to do it. I payed them over 200€ (236$) repair cost for a 900€ (1.066,01 $) interface, just to repair the USB port. This is maybe also interesting for those reviews you do, how well the support works in case there is something wrong. But then again at this point it would make no sense with your channel size to speak from your current experiences. This could be another series where your community tells you horrible or great stories about technical issues that got fixed or not.

I've very rarely seen board-and-chassis-mount USB ports, for what it's worth (and i've taken apart my fair share of computer- and/or audio-gear). That being said, if you take care of gear, especially connectors that aren't chassis-mounted, there shouldn't be any reason why they wouldn't last. That being said, i don't think you'll find *ANY* company that covers physical damage under their warranty ;) They're not stupid, y'know - they're in it to *make money* , not to offer charity...
@Eventual4207 жыл бұрын
Beefy Audio I also use the UC and UFX. What makes the UC special is its the only RME interface that will let you run 2 stereo digital channels. My Eventide H8000FW depends on it.
@khronscave7 жыл бұрын
It's spelled "anything", and as i've mentioned, i seriously doubt their warranty terms covered physical damage to the product. "Warranty" doesn't mean "fix ANYthing that breaks / i break on the product, for free", y'know...

Absolutely not. Audient's drivers don't hold a candle to RME's.
@alengregorin83667 жыл бұрын
Yeah, RME is really great is you're serious, but if your on the budget, like i was back in the day, Focusrite Liquid 56 is the way to go, really cant beat that ! 8 channels with 2 DSP preamp channels, 10 outputs if you exclude your monitors if you're a headphone guy. 2 headphone outputs and Gazillion routing options. Unless you are a PRO at the very top, you won't notice sound quality difference between the two. I cant recommend a better option for the money, or even 200€ more than that, such as Motu which has nothing compared to the Liquid 56 :)
@Stefan-7 жыл бұрын
Agree, i have a LS56 as well, its great and good value and you can expand it with two adat interfaces for an additional 16 channels. Its out of production though. Im sure RME is nice, but is also very expensive.

My studio is a small one - my interface is a Steinberg UR242 which is connected to a Mackie ProFX8. Since the only person doing any recording 99.9% of the time is me, this serves my purposes very well. I must admit that the RME has a lot going for it - it's just not something that I would need in my tiny environment.

@LordD697 жыл бұрын
Depends in what context. If you want "top notch" and extreme high end you will most probably have to go to individual solutions for preamps, interface, DAC, world clock etc and possibly you will have to sell your house to afford them :) I still have the 800 and would definitely upgrade to a UFX + if I could spare the money. :)
