Greatness: The V12 Vantage S AMR - One Take

A V12 fed through a manual transmission is a rare find these days. At present, not a single new car comes with that combination. Which makes this the 2017 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S AMR a very special drive. The "AMR" is a special edition of the V12 S, and comes a screaming titanium exhaust and 30 more HP than a standard car, for a total of 595HP. At the time, it was the most powerful Vantage ever.300 AMRs were made: 200 have V8s, 100 have V12s. And only 1 had the added carbon package.
** Regarding wind noise: I tried some noise cancelling software in Audition and it sounded like aliens talking under water. So I edited 2 clips of this video, (one with noise cancelling and one without) posted them on IG, and took a poll: Everyone voted for wind noise. So, I apologize.

Gentlemen, I very much share your analysis and experience in the video. I am driving the very same car (2016 AM Vantage V 12 S), yet with the paddles (not the manual stick shift). I have this car since some 6 plus years. I drove now some 40,000 kilometers - this equals some 25,000 miles). The sound and the entire personlity of the car puts a huge smile into my face (and every bystander) every time I fire up the engine and drive. Pressing the sports button and the flaps open at 3,000 rpm (instead of 3,500 rpm). Most fortunately, the car does not have any turbos or stupid particle filters that would badly harm if not destroy that fine, unique, sensational sound. While I use the sports button a lot, I intentionally do not stiffen the dampers too frequently. Best sound at exactly 3,150 rpm (with the sports button engaged). I know some AM drivers that have permanently removed the fuse of the flaps (which intentionally I have not). Trust me, you definitely do not need a radio, a cell phone and even less an endlessly chatting copilot. Instead, a fuel tank with more capacity woud be more useful. The sound of the engine alone is all you ever want. That's it. Nothing more. And, oh yes: lost of tunnels and underpasses. Both windows down, no matter how cold it is outside. Sport button engaged. 3,150 rpm plus. I had the car up to speeds slightly north of 200 mph (325 km/h) on the German Autobahn. It runs like hell and sounds even better. Stable, controlable, providing lots of confidence at high speeds. Also great at twisting roads (serpentines) and hairpins/country roads in the Alps. The fine steering demands curves and and engaged driver. The steering, the brakes and the entire handing are just excellent, great to control and easy to modulate in a very fine, rather defined fashion. The car is great fun to drive and a reward all along. Also, the AM brand does help a lot. I received some rather positive feedback and admiration, not jealousy/destain. The weekest point is indeed the gearbox, which is slow, in particular when the car is cold. A double clutch would be so much desireable. I always warm up the car thoroughly - i.e. some 15/20minutes or at least 20 plus miles - before turning the engine above - say - 2,500 rpm. In competition with other high performance sports cars, the heavy weight on the front axle does not help, in particular in steep downhill sections. Still, the top speed, agility and the sensational sound make up for everything. The way how this car generates and delivers power is without substitute. I intentionally do not use it every day. Biut when I drive it, it warms my heart. Like with any other drug, you cannot increase the dosis endlessly. An avid driver & hard core V 12 enthusiast from Germany. Did I ever mention the sound???

That seems to be the thing with AM, in general. Performance figures you'd normally expect from your average decent sports car, for 3x the money, and then "special editions" of said car, with negligible improvements, for an exorbitant amount of money on top. It's the most expensive "sports car" I can think of based on actual performance. Meanwhile, doesn't seem to matter anyway because 99% of them get driven ~500 miles/year, usually to and from a Cars & Coffee at 37mph.

That car will be broke and leaking something around 50k miles, with a few high revs and a few weekend drives. It sounds great and looks great. But you can rip a GT3 everyday and it will keep coming back for more. Does that thing even have Bluetooth? Nice car...but not one that lasts.

I've had a 2007 V8 Vantage for 3 years and it has 52k miles on it. I drive it daily. The only maintenance I've had to do for the car has been simple wear items. It has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I've had a Cayman S that drank oil and was a cabin squeak music box. My buddy had to rebuild his 997.1 GTS engine. I could go on and on about the Porsche quality control. They're not great and Porsches depreciate almost as bad as Mercs and BMWs.
