Why are we expected to give to charities when we already pay so much in various taxes? I thought contributing to the common weal was what taxes were for. The Haig fund, for example, was set up in 1921 to provide care for ex-servicemen, of which there were hundreds of thousands. At the time, taxes for working people were far lower than today's rates when ex-servicemen (and women) are almost infinitesimally fewer in number, and much better cared for. We are still asked to cough up for the Poppy Appeal, however, and the range of merchandise available is mind-boggling. The whole charity business has got completely out of hand and is little more than a money-grubbing exercise for various 'CEOs', 'Marketing Directors' and 'Diversity Consultants'.

If the public had been told that the profits of the book would not be going to charity but to his family the book would have only sold a fraction of what it did (if any at all) The bottom line is they think that because over 30 million was raised for charity they should be entitled to the 800K-1M and that’s just wrong!! They know it’s wrong because of how uncomfortable and slightly embarrassed they act when answering (and I use that word loosely) the questions when interviewed by Piers Morgan. Anybody who purchased that book thinking the proceeds would be going to charity should be entitled to a full refund. The bare face lie that her father wanted them to have the book sales profits is outrageous, I would bet my mortgage that he never said it which makes them even more disgusting and vile than first thought!

Captain Tom is a priceless memory. Let's remember his dignity. I didn't trust his daughter, Hannah. People forget that she appeared to be controlling events etc . Captain Tom aged gracefully in age , dignity and strength to achieve what he did to lift the nation. Indeed money is mammoth. It draws greediness, selfishness, enemies and sadness. Is all that Captain Cook did worth it. Hannah needs forgiveness and she in turn with the family in particular, her husband to apologise to the nation for their shameless but shameful acts. Captain Sir Tom deserves better in life and in death. I believe most Charities CEO's are paid huge salaries than what they are meant for. In my view, Hannah was no exemption in choosing that quick money path. Likewise there are well meaning Charitable causes and a caring wonderful giving nation. We take pride in that..
