Well, as I’m a JS Bach devotee for over 35 years (classical musician here, keyboard and voice) I already knew I was going to love this when I heard the Brandenburg Concerto playing - I discovered these when I was 12 years old. This was a beautiful choice of music and then you followed it up with Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, first movement. I’m sure Artemis would have approved. Such purity of music she would be entranced. Then you had footage of the film "Orlando" with the incomparable Tilda Swinton. I am crazy about the book and the film. Your sense of taste is first class. The video was beautifully crafted and I loved the narration.

A version of Actaeon and the hounds is also found in Celtic mythology. In my opinion, the most famous depiction of Diana-Artemis is the Augustus Saint-Gaudens statue that was first placed atop Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1893. There is a nice half-scale Diana from the 1928 displayed in New York MET today.
@TinyEpics3 ай бұрын
@@jsmcguireIII Yes, this piece is also quite iconic, and feels firmly situated in late 19th century aesthetics. It’s a more delicate, ethereal version of the goddess, whereas the so-called ‘Diana of Versailles’ feels earthier, more rustic. This is, I suppose, how I typically think of her. Then there is the Artemis of Ephesus too, focusing on the fertility aspect of Artemis/Diana. I always find it fascinating how the gods are depicted quite differently over the span of time, and through the prism of shifting culture, beliefs, and taste. Thanks for your comment!

In ancient Greek art Hecket is shown in the same short dress and hairstyle as Artemis, excepting that she carries two torches. I'm a little surprised there was no mention of Actaeon. In the Vatican an ancient fresco shows A group of children worshipping Diana, and a group of little girl miniature statues were found in Brauron, at the shrine of Artemis..

Just subscribed. Great content, but the pronunciation of Hecate was a bit jarring because I've always heard it pronounced like the classical Greeks; He-Ca-tay with the emphasis on the second syllable.
@TinyEpics3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. The way I’ve pronounced it is the way my professor used to say it, and also how the wonderful reader in Edith Hamilton’s “Mythology” audiobook pronounces it. I’m learning Greek at the moment and yes, you are correct, Εκάτη would have the emphasis on the 2nd syllable. But I found it jarring to try and pronounce it this way in the middle of an American English sentence. To each their own.

Fun fact… Artemis isn’t a goddess of chastity or virginity. She did ask to remain a maiden, but there are no cults or rituals that worship her as a goddess of virginity.
@TedHouk Жыл бұрын
She is smiling at me, and when I look up and see eight days until the new moon, so 22 until the first rutting moon. If you can’t figure that out, learn about it! We have been hunter gatherers for hundreds of thousands of years. Since the Proto Indo Europeans were in Mesopotamia, and well before. Seline was one of our 30 moon’s day goddesses, thanks for Hecate+Artemis. Siri brings up Artemisia, so learn Medical Botany also.

I am going to upset the female readers, but please do not shoot the messenger. In many cultures, it is/was believed that women do not have souls. The ancient Greeks believed that when a man penetrated a woman, he fills her with his essence. Keeping this in mind, the Greek concept of virginity has more to do with freedom and independence than purity. Three and a half of the Olympians were virgin goddesses, Artemis, Athena, and Hestia. The half was Hera who annually bathed in a magic pool that restored her virginity -- her independent spirit.
@Nacidodelmar3 жыл бұрын
You do not need to be apologetic neither embarrassed to freely mention Greek's mythology matters of insect, rape, etc. They were not afraid nor shame of human's feelings. They practically invented theater as thesis as catharsis and pathos.

I kinda hates this video….. you didn’t put enough respect on Artemis and spent too long talking about Hecate? And you also said that people call her forth during “times of transition such as pregnancy and childbirth”. Bro those are life-threatening experiences , which is why they’re turning to a badass huntress and goddess of nature. They aren’t “transitions”.
@TinyEpics4 ай бұрын
@@chelseashurmantine8153 Well that’s the beauty of creation, isn’t it? I can make something I am passionate about in my freetime for fun, then share it for free with people who can choose to love it or hate it. Yours is certainly not one of the more thoughtful comments I have received, but thanks for taking the time to comment anyway. There are lots of videos about Artemis out there, so perhaps you will find a video or channel more suited to your personal preferences and one that aligns more with how you choose to interpret these mythological archetypes. Or here’s an even better idea: try putting something together yourself see where it takes you! Not sure what more to say except to suggest you go somewhere else and be happy. Be well.✌️👋

Thanks for your comment! Part of what I do in my channel is show artistic references of the gods and goddesses over the centuries. I’m not here to judge those images as respectful or disrespectful. Perhaps certain images might even spark a thoughtful conversation on sexism, the male gaze, and how depictions shift over time. As you have pointed out, her nudity is crucial to a rather important myth which I will cover in my next video about Artemis.
