The love and/or wrath of a mother knows no bounds. Several individuals witnessed Persephone's abduction yet remained silent. All what the Olympians endured could have been avoided had someone said something. Humanity lived in a golden age of great harmony when Cronus ruled, I don't agree with him devouring his children but at least we never suffered when he sat on the throne.

What Zeus could have said to Demeter: "Our daughter is old enough to be married. Hades wants to marry her. I'm the king. It's happening." What Zeus did: " I'll help you kidnap her. I don't wanna deal with Demeter's anger. She'll have to accept it after it happens." Also Zeus: "Ok, Demeter, I understand that mistakes were made, but you can't just stop doing your job and let a bunch of humans die. They're not sacrificing anymore, and thats really affecting our bottom line. What do I need to do to make this ok?".

This is only one version of the story. In others Persephone wanted to be him but her mother wouldn't allow it or permit it. So they concocted the abduction as way to bypass her. This version is tied to the fact that she ate the pomegranate and must have known what that meant to make such a obvious error. This way she didn't need to ask her mother permission and looked like a helpless victim. Again, because later she was happy being married to Hades, so it does at least appear that it could have been an elaborate scheme.

I am not one that loves seeing someone humiliated. But after what Demeter did to the gods and mankind, I have to say it felt oddly satisfying. Though I feel for the sirens. It is all too often that lesser creatures are abused by the gods. They are used as pawns and examples over events they lack any real agency or blame for. As always Sir Baldermort and Lady Lightbringer, it was a pleasure to listen to you both at work.

A great tale of intrigue and power, showing how Hera is THE queen on Olympus! I think the whole point of this whole party and contest was Hera demonstrating the authority both she and Zeus commanded over the other gods, and subtly letting Demeter know not to trifle with them again. Hera practically dared Demeter to try and save her Sirens, and in front of the whole court, backed down from here, to everyone present that Zeus and Hera were the true power and authority among the Olympians.
@johnchoi44737 ай бұрын
So can someone explain how the sirens losing that way was a power move by Hera? Honestly curious/trying to comprehend.
@livingmythology14057 ай бұрын
Honestly it’s all in the politics Demeter had just displayed defiance of the rulers decision and shown great power. (With the winter brought to the world and refusal to stop when ordered) The sirens were her nymphs - her people - she is seen here unable, unwilling, to defend her own people against the rulers - Hera and Zeus The muses are also linked to Zeus and so are representative of him in this competition - as glory and pride would go to the winner/ whoever is their linked god. If the muses with - so do Zeus and Hera If the sirens win - Demeter would have won in a way also. But this showed that Demeter is not willing to challenge the rulers to save her people, and so cannot be seen as rival to Zeus if any god/goddess started a coup against him. The court / everyone knows now that Demeter will not defend you, she has bent to the will of Zeus and Hera at the end of this piece. It was a challenge - to see if Demeter would rise to defy the king again. However the original tale doesn’t state why - Pausanias, Description of Greece 9. 34. 3 (trans. Jones) (Greek travelogue C2nd A.D.) : "[At Koroneia (Coronea) in Boiotia] is a sanctuary of Hera . . . in her hands she carried the Seirenes (Sirens). For the story goes that the daughters of Akheloios (Achelous) were persuaded by Hera to compete with the Mousai (Muses) in singing. The Mousai won, plucked out the Seirenes' feathers and made crowns for themselves out of them." I hope this makes more sense now! - Lightbringer

The fact that the muses were the sirens' own mothers is just so cruel. It makes the punishment infinitely more cruel and painful. The whole universe of olympian gods is one of cruelty, power thirst and heartlessness, all sugar coated with beauty and glamour. A system in place to prevent any rebellion against the ones in power, and all gods are complicit. Prometheus gave his prophecy that Zeus, though he was confident at that time, would one day be destroyed by a far more powerful offspring who will be a better fighter and have recourse to greater weapons. This would fulfill the curse of Chronus, Zeus's own deposed father. Well, didn't that prophecy kind of come true?

My alord thank you for this other epic so just fully narrated 🙏 Fun fact I just realized after you video: Sirens are different from mermaids in the Mythology ?! And how far from the Harpies are those Sirens represented here? They do seem to uave a similar outlook through most Greek mythos and Epics. Alao "sirène" in French means mermaid....funny assimilation of voth languages. Or possibly the elder term was lost in the common knowledge of the plebs that could have composed the crews of ships at the time "mermaid" was coinned for the half fish ladies of the deep? Also mermaid seems to be from both French and English language. As mer" is the French word for the sea. Could be Interesting to research when sirene/ mermaid started to be used to adress the fish ladies while the name clearly belongs to the feathery transformed Nymphs.

This implies Demeter chose to make her women warriors to protect them from the men who would rape and steal them away. Was it punishment? OR empowerment? Did Athena not do the same thing with Medusa after Poseidon's unwanted advances? Perhaps Hera being coddled did not understand the strength of being able to take care of herself. Probably could have avoided the fight by just talking to her BEFORE shipping her daughter off. Even if her daughter was willing to go. But yeah you really make Hera sound awful. How would she like it if they shipped out Hebe or Ilithryia without talking to HER? Hurting Demeter's adopted daughters' for favoring her only daughter was very mean and unempathetic. I'm surprised supposedly sweet muses and their mothers would be so disrespectful to them. As a kindness I would have only taken ONE feather and called it enough. Hmm...contest was basically 'hopes for the future' vs 'platitudes and memories of the past'. If you are a peoples who want for nothing, then its hard to be 'reached' by one with hopes. If they're stroking your ego and you have huge amounts of pride you'd definitely be more interested in hearing your own accomplishments. I guess the muses just knew their crowd then. It was an easy victory for their experience.
