This has been going on for years. And both Uber and Lyft warn drivers frequently about these scams. But some drivers don't pay attention. The best thing to do is to never answer your phone. There's absolutely no good reason for Uber, Lyft, or any passenger to call you. Everything can be done through the app.

They have slightly updated the scam. They order a ride to a bogus location. When you arrive you can’t locate them, then you call them.

bad advise! I have been doing uber 8yrs and this is a old scam. he didn't do his homework. if you get a call on the app who says they are from uber they are not! uber will not contact you like that. So don't hang up on them, start your ride and drive around the block till they cancel the ride while keeping them on the phone as long as possible. last time they tried that with me I made a extra 12.00 dollars from them

Thanks for the warning and glad he’s helping others with info on what happened. Linking the debit card should have been a red flag. If it were Uber support, they would likely offer a credit but I doubt they even do that for a canceled ride and bogus complaint. Also sounded like the “complaint” was dismissed too easily.

Best advice I can give not just Uber drivers but everyone is this, Be very cautious when receiving calls claiming to be Uber or a bank. NEVER do things the hacker or scammer is telling to do. When they start telling to input numbers or give account numbers RED FLAG. When this is happing, HANG UP, always call the institution directly. This is how I been able to keep my accounts from hacking. I hope this helps people.

3 months ago I had a guy who asked me to borrow my phone so he can make a call, I already heard of riders doing the then transfer money from the drivers account to their bank, I immediately said NO SORRY! the guy got so upset and started to say that I was mean he needs to make a call blah blah blah, I completed the ride then reported the rider

This guy isn’t very smart. He never drives at night for safety? Umm last I checked crime also happens during the day. Also, UBER warns EVERY driver not to give out your information to ANYONE!! Is he not paying attention to the rules?? That’s probably why he got deactivated because he obviously doesn’t pay attention to the Uber terms of service/use. And NO he “didn’t do everything right” he did everything wrong!!

scammers order a ride then cancel it. Scammers then follow up by calling the driver to complain about some made up story (at this point, driver thinks it is Uber rep who calls him). They then offer the driver to compensate him for the canceled ride by linking a card to the driver's Uber app (again, the driver thinks it is Uber who's going to give him money by linking company card to his app). Instead of giving money, they take/steal money from the driver's Uber app.

You drive for uber. Suddenly when you pull to the pick up spot, the rider cancels. You get a phone call. An Indian accent. Talks to you politely, impersonating uber support. You provide the requested info. You are suspicious that maybe that was a hoax. You call uber support. An Indian accent picks up. Yep, was definitely uber support. You hang up! In the few times I have dealt with uber support, they are completely incompetent or play dumb. They give you scripted answers never answer what was actually requested. It is useless... unless the media gets involved.

I’m sorry but this man is a fool! However, UBER isn’t a very good company to work for anyway and their terms of service are very customer passenger oriented. Meaning, no matter what the passenger says Uber takes their word as gospel and deactivates the driver even before any investigation is done, so the driver is guilty before proven innocent in UBERs eyes. Also, the driver is required to maintain a high rating 4.8 or higher out of 5 or they will be booted and deactivated off of the Uber platform. However, I have driven passengers with ratings as low as 3.9 and 4.2 out of 5 but these passenger are still able to flag rides on Uber, as to where a driver would’ve been deactivated as soon as their rating fell below 4.8.
