The bad guy with the grenade on stairs happened. Caused controversy as well. The media were asking, "Why does he have so many bullets in him? It must have been an execution!" No, it just that 3 or 4 operators saw the threat independently of each other, and they all took action at the same time. John McAleese described it best, "when theres a situation like that, it's no good looking at each other, wondering who's gonna deal with it. So we all shot him."

Yep yep this. Also to clarify the extraction, 1 hostage was killed trying to exfil with hostages and 1 xray did in fact make it outside to the lawn. He was identified and led away by one of the SAS team. That member returned alone a few seconds later. This was investigated. However as Thatcher had given the order of ' no terrorist is to leave ' iirc no action was taken. I saw this unfold as a kid, it started my fascination with the SAS.

@@GreymanGhost You are wrong, one terrorist made it to the lawn and was being taken away by one of the the team and another operator asked him where he was taking him. We all know why he was being taken away. But the operator said to the guy taking him away, we need to keep him here. The terrorist spent years in jail and was released a few years ago. Two hostages were killed. One prior to, one during the assault. One terrorist survived and was only recently released from prison. He (like the guy killed on the stairs) chickened out and pretended to be a hostage. When he was zip-tied and put on his belly (like all the hostages until positive IDs were made) he was identified as a hostile by the hostages. Rumour has it that an SAS operator picked him up and started to lead him back indoors, with the intention of executing him, before a fellow operator pointed out there were cameras on them and he was reluctantly returned to the lawn and arrested. PM Margaret Thatcher and her husband Dennis later visited the SAS team at Hyde Park Barracks to congratulate them for a job well done. Operators "Snapper" and John McAleese remember Dennis joking "Well done chaps, but you let one of the bastards live."

It helps that there was a former SAS sergeant among the police presence who phoned the SAS officers mess before the government actually called them in, and said something along the lines of "your probably going to get called in for this, be ready" so the 2 teams that were taking part were already waiting with their gear to be called in when the government actually called them in

@Thetasigmaalpha The surviving terrorists name is Fowzi Nejad. He was one of a group seeking independence for Khuzestan province, an oil rich part of southern Iran whose population are mainly Iranian Arabs. The Revolutionary Government of Iran brutally suppressed demonstrations for Independence and jailed many of the protesters. The group that Nejad joined were nationalists, not hard core terrorists like Isis, who foolishly decided to go down the terrorist path. The Iranian government still suppress the people of Khuzestan and anyone else who dares to challenge the Iranian government in any way. As can be seen by their recent brutal treatment of women who wanted to dress in a more western way. After the siege was ended Nejad was given a life sentence in prison. After 27 years he was released. Normally foreign prisoners are immediately deported, but because Iran would not guarantee his safety he was allowed to stay in the UK. The UK will not deport anyone to a country where that person may be sentenced to death. Because of the nature of his offence he was not granted asylum in the UK, though for practical purposes he was. Which probably means he is not allowed to work. Which in turn means he was getting benefit and assistance with his housing and council taxes from the State. As he is now in his mid sixties he may now receive the State Pension or Pension Credit. It would be a rather sad empty life for him, as although he gets just enough to live on, there would be lots of restrictions on his life.

Tyler is right about the guy on the stairs, he was pushed towards one of the other ops who made the recognition and fired, i think i heard that another op shot him as well at bottom of stairs before checking grenade. As for the other terrorist that Buck mentioned.....everybody that was evacuated was ziptied on lawn outside until they could be ID'd. Some of the hostages were yelling that one of the terrorists was there, so they grabbed him. There was unofficial rumour that the boys were going to take him back into the building to finish the job but the news cameras were watching. That of course is completely denied. That guy from the lawn was the only survivor of the terrorist group and went to prison

I was 10 when this happened, and like millions of others I watched it live on television. In the UK at the time we had just three television channels. BBC1 was showing the final of the World Snooker Championships. BBC2 was showing a John Wayne western (that's what we were watching). ITV were showing an episode of the long running soap opera Coronation Street, and they refused to switch to the embassy footage until Coronation Street had finished. Kate Adie (played by Abboe Cornish in the film) was the BBC commentator during the attack and would later get shot in the elbow during the Tiemnaman (spelling) Square massacre in 1989. The whole country was walking on air the next day.

I can't pin point the interview but it was said that during the Iraq insurgency the door kicking operations went through the roof so that every type of SF unit was doing it. During these times Rangers transformed into a tier 1 unit being a middle ground between conventional and SF units. While at the same time Green Berets were also operating at high tempo in Afghanistan. So at such times one also feels to get the mission over as quickly as possible as there are more targets to hit and there is not enough manpower or time. The stairwell grenade scene absolutely happened but also true that one X-ray made it onto the lawn. When the SAS found in on the grass they were going to drag him back into the embassy to finish the job but were stopped by some other operator as there was too many police, tv cameras, witnesses.

0:45 There was a hostage rescue back in 1991, where Pakistani terrorists hijacked Singapore Airlines flight SQ117. The entire drama played out over 10 hours and took about 30 seconds to conclude. 0 hostage casualties, 0 operator casualties, 4 very dead terrorists. See below link for an ACTUAL film school production: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIXVhnZumsppnNE [also included interviews of real life operators plus hostages]

@FNGACADEMY Not sure if you're aware of the Special Task Force that use to be South Africa's Tear 1 counter terror/ SWAT unit. but, they use to have an impressive hostage rescue statistic. Their secretion naturally mirror some key elements from the SAS being an ex colony of the UK. Would be great to get your views on them with a video break down. The documentary was done back in 1995 so I'm not sure if they maintained their standards since South Africa has been going rapidly down hill. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2OvaoGHiJJ0btUsi=WqENDlvHpdYIrT-Z

There were two terrorists that tried to escape with the hostages, the first one was killed on the stairs, the second one was identified by Sim Harris while they were all handcuffed on the lawn. Both Robin Horsfall and John Mac have both been on camera more than once 'hinting' that the second guy was going to be dragged back in and shot, but Horsfall stopped them. Not because he felt bad about it, but because as he pointed out to the other operators, they were surrounded by Police and the worlds press. The second terrorist who survived was sentenced to life in prison and served 27 years. He was released on life licence (much to the annoyance of many involved) in 2008. The then Prime Ministers husband, Denis Thatcher, was with the PM and met up with the Hooligans immediately after the Op at Regents Park barracks and jokingly berated them saying that 'You let one of the bastards live.'

Hey, I'm 17, scored really well on my ASVAB, and I'm seeking an option 40 infantry contract. My family is telling me to just choose something smart or technical, and that would set me up better for life after the army. I'm supposed to go to meps in about 2 weeks but now I'm having doubts on if this is the right mos. Any advice?

Let's be honest though, barring tactical missions, these are national strategic assets, which is inherently political...don't make it an us versus them...the T# folks know this. It's cool to be cool, but, war is war and war is politics. War and politics are brothers from the same mother. Funny, I walked into a hangar in Haiti, full of container sized coolers full of beer and other goodies. T# folks before the fight, a slight CIA thingy? Total respect. All the best. Cheers.

I remember watching this live on TV as it happened. One bad guy did end up on the lawn. An SAS soldier started to walk the bad guy to the rear of building. He had to be stopped by one of his buddies who realised the world was watching. It was obvious that the SAS soldier was going to execute him.

The one that made it out was Fowzi Badavi Nejad. He was arrested and tried. He served 27 years in prison. He is now living somewhere in England under a new identity as due to human rights laws he couldn't be sent back to Iran. There was no eye to eye moment on the stairs with the other one, he was recognised by several of the team and shot on the spot..
@BedsitBob

The shooting of the X-ray on the stairs, wasn't quite as portrayed. He'd already passed the SAS guy on the stairs, when he was recognised, and they couldn't shoot him, for fear of hitting each other, or the hostages. So, he was hurled down the stairs, and shot as he reached the bottom. Three troopers opened up on him, riddling him with rounds.

all plans have flaws and the more mistakes are found in the preparation, the better the plan will be who knows, maybe you have a great idea, maybe they missed something * I mean, look at the series Mythbusters, when they say in simple myths that plan A never works, and they usually end up with plan M, O or S and now add hostages, terrorists, bombs and an attack team to that a recipe for chaos

The true story regarding the terrorists is the one on the stairwell with the hand grenade was eliminated as soon as they were made aware of him and yes one terrorist did actual sneak out among the hostages onto the back lawn of the Embassy but as the story goes a member of the SAS recognised him from the mugshots they,de been shown and apparently tried to escort him back inside the Embassy to do shat eho know but his own team mate persuaded him to leave it as there were to many witnesses eventually that terrorist seeved his time in jail about 20 years and now lives in London true story i,ve watch many documentary s about this and these are actual eyewitness accounts

The guy on the stairs was true. Several troopers shot him when they realised he had a grenade. He was left with something like 27 rounds in him. One further terrorist managed to sneak out with the hostages but the hostages brought attention to him whilst they all got handcuffed on the lawn outside.

When I was a Kid I had a subscription to Combat Missions Magazine and there was an article in one of the issues about dealing with threats in buildings and it said Always attack from the top of the building down as it's a bad idea to fight up where the bad guys get trapped like rats and fight to the death. This was sometime in the mid 80's and it's something I've taken away from them since that time.

Yeah, it was part of British Army Doctrine from post-WW2 through the 80s to attack top down whenever possible for the reasons you said. You can see old training videos where they'd have an MG cover the main exit and the soldiers in the building would shoot through walls and floors on the way down to force the occupiers into the street for the MG crew to take them out. The main problem which was covered as part of the instruction was the fact that it is time consuming and requires a lot of coordination

Good book - "Soldier ""I" SAS" - dude was on the staircase, hit the grenade guy in the head to knock him down the stairs - two other guys shot him. One terrorist did get out with the hostages, was identified and arrested once everyone was out and zapstrapped on the lawn. When the Coroner's Inquest happened afterwards, he was one of the operators that had to testify, including having to explain why grenade guy had so many bullet holes in him... Weird story - my mother was doing her history degree when I was high school, and one of the courses was a military history course - they had the negotiator as a guest lecturer and he presented the audio tapes of him keeping Oan busy right up to when the window and distraction charges went off and the shooting started. There were students invited from the military college in town that got to hear/see a more classified version as well - ongoing audio and video from outside and inside the embassy after the fire was put out and the CSI folks started going through.
