So many veterans won’t speak of the experiences they went through in battle, not because they don’t want to or because they’re humble about it but because it’s just too painful to relive. Many of them had PTSD but didn’t even know because it was just called shellshock and remained misunderstood. Rehashing the events and speaking out about them would probably be too much to go through. That’s not to say they never think about the things that happened to them or the friends they lost, but voicing it is another level. I have the greatest respect for all veterans no matter how good or bad their time was, but I have the most respect for the ones who can talk about things because it takes so much bravery to go through it and bring it up again.

This guy is an inspiration as an amputee myself. Met a lot of military amputees at the hospital I was at. I lost mine on a motorcycle ripped my foot off was caught by the chain and my foot was taken into the wheel it was only hanging by a tendon. Opened forehead, my skin on my arms was scraped off. Was resuscitated on site went into the ER spent one hour without anesthesia cause of the blood loss and the surgeons had to act quick if they wanted to save my foot. So I screamed and fainted multiple times till I couldn’t take it no more and told them to cut it off. Went the hard way on becoming an amputee and the military amputees there helped me cope with the pain

This guy has a true warriors ethos. He’s been thru unimaginable hell and is undoubtedly still conquering demons like depression and pain but he has chosen to continue to be a warrior in new and different ways for different kinds of battles. The best thing a soldier who is fighting PTSD can do is to find that new thing to fight for or fight against. Loss of purpose is what kills soldiers after the war. Life is meant to be lived with purpose so find it and keep living brothers (and sisters).

Nothing is more impressive and rewarding than to visit a VA hospital and sit with a veteran just to have a chat. I spent every day for 7 years visiting my sweetheart at the Long Beach VA. He was in the Spinal Cord section of the hospital. I’d see a vet sitting alone and shoot them a little smile. They would light up and before long we’d become friends. Everyone in the vicinity of a VA hospital should give it a try. Be a friend and an encourager. Show your love and gratitude.

its crazy how the love of his life left him and a man died right infront of him and he describes it as a rough day it’s puts in perspective how much they go through and how we could never handle that
@michaelr.wilder33393 жыл бұрын
He then went on to describe the time as "it was a pretty shitty year" just so matter of factly and so mildly. He is truly one of the good guys. I am a veteran and used to work for the VA and have been around a hell of a lot of veterans and there are typically two kinds. You've got the whiny, entitled sonsofbitches who think that the world owes them everything for serving a lousy 4 year hitch and never hearing a shot fired in anger and probably didn't even leave the States or if they did it was to a decent allied country and they pushed a broom or some shit like that all day. Then you've got the guys like Justin who not only see combat but experience and suffer through all kinds of hell and sum it up with just "it was a pretty shitty year." God bless him. That's a real man and a real American hero right there but I bet you my last dollar that he would deny that.
@guygrimmett17643 жыл бұрын
It truly puts everything in perspective. Most people are trying to figure put how to claim victimhood status for attention. And then there's this mam. Who's a true victim on so many levels and he sweeps it away suffering away like it's crumbs. Then in hard core heroic fashion, all he want to do is help the families of his fallen Brothers. He is a real man and an extreme hero. I thank him for be an incredible inspiration!

@@guygrimmett1764 You're right. Hearing this man's story I was immediately reminded of the kind of narcissitic, self-congratulatory circlejerking I now so often see amongst groups of Gen Zs and younger Millennials all telling each other how stunning and brave they are for doing absolutely f*ck all. I have a good friend who's former SBS and suffers with PTSD quite badly. He's hardly talked about what he experienced although the few things he's hinted at tell me enough. One of the rare times I've really seen him get angry was when we were at a party and some whiny woke soyboy who's never even been in cubs let alone the military started telling everyone how he had PTSD because he was once beaten up for being left-wing (which I highly doubt even happened judging by how unheard of that is plus his refusal to give any details of his story). There are now tens of millions of whining crying victims who are a victim of nothing but their own delusions, yet they get far more attention and benefits than guys like this green beret who actually deserve to never have to worry about anything again for the rest of their lives.

Perspective is important in both ways. In comparison to someone else your situation can look worse or better. However, it is good to look at your situation based on your own life. i actually worked on this guy back when i was stationed In germany. I was a surgical tech at the time, when he rolled back into the OR suite at the time we had to restart his heart. and we are the ones who amputated his right foot. i had to hold his left knee cap up with my body for a couple hours haha covered in blood. overall we worked on him for 2 days 8 hours each! good guy

My father was a WWll vet served three years in Europe.he went over he was barely 19.I have three buddies that served in Vietnam.we are all 70 years plus now.the stories are horrendous of what they went thru and the things they saw.I have pictures from dad.how they had the mind to record this is another story.When he came home he couldn’t stand being there.he took off into rural British Columbia ,Canada.The toll that they paid mentally is incredible.in those days they didn’t have ptsd treatment or the drugs for pain that they have now.the government that they offered their lives for largely puts them out to pasture so to speak.They are tossed aside like yesterdays garbage.absolutely shocking what these brave and courageous men and women have to endure in war…….and in peace at home.

I was fortunate to come home without having physically lost anything. The silver lining being what he expressed, a thankfulness for each day you have and an appreciation for things in life that are no longer taken for granted. It may sound odd, but when I go into a supermarket in my mind I think "this is a really cool place". There is something to be said about experiencing lows that can give one an added appreciation for the highs. You see this not just with war, but life in general. Those accounts of North Koreans who manage to escape are quite something.
