It's been more than 3 years but I remember it like it was yesterday. The pandemic was looming large. I was going to bed and decided to tune In to this episode expecting very little. For the next 3 hours, I was blown away by this gentleman's genuinely intriguing tale. A few months later, when I was setting up my Twitter account, I reached out to him and he actually responded to me! Glenn Villeneuve is as real as it gets - one of the nicest, smartest guys I've had a chance to talk to. This JRE episode is arguably the best out of the lot and in my opinion, Glenn was the best guest Joe has ever had. I sincerely hope he gets another chance to come on the show :)

@Matthew Wells - they don't get out of hand because they resort to literal Warfare with other packs. 40 years ago, I had an old neighbor tell a tale of hunting elk in Alaska. So, I'd guess this actually happened about 60 years old. Anyways they had 2 dog sled teams and 2 drivers and him. He spotted and shot an elk at a large distance. But it stood back up, so he shot it again. but when they got to the elk, they found out it was another one that was bedded down behind the first one. So, he had accidently shot 2. But they did not have capacity to carry all of 2 elk out with just 2 sled teams. So, they took one whole elk and the head mount on the 2nd. the guide said to drink as much beer as they could and make a complete circle of pee 'no gaps", around what was left of the remaining elk. And if they were fast enough getting back the wolves would not cross the pee path. they returned in less than 24 hrs to find lots of wolf tracks around the pee line, but never crossed and they were able to take the rest of the meat. I was in his home once and he had animal busts from just about every animal. I've never understood the whole taxidermy thing, just as long as they eat the meat.

The yawn is actually purposeful body language showing non-hostility and uninterest, that wolf knew it was being watched and effectively wanted to signal a truce. I see it in domestic dogs when meeting new dogs (and in some anxious human interactions).

@@The-Dom I didn't say wolves don't yawn for other reasons like the one you gave, you dolt. God, what has happened to reading comprehension in this country? I said, the most likely reason for this particular wolf's particular yawn in this particular case has a more distilled explanation than communicating with a different species or extractive, anthropomorphic interpretation of what it "meant." Most likely, the wolf was out of breath, or worn out, so it yawned, and is also why the wolf was so passive and submissive in abandoning it's prey. That is, it was too tired to continue on. Occam's Razer. If you've studied psychology or medicine, you're familiar with the concept, and probably familiar with the cigar reference from Freud, and probably also familiar with a phrase like "seek horses not zebras." Sometimes a cigar "represents a penis; sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Get it now?

This story is true as told to me as a child, my uncle's father in law was a trapper in Alaska ( he actually helped the government map out Alaska ) he was out on a trip ( as he put it ) and he had bagged an elk he was cleaning it and he turns around and he says there's about 8 wolves he told me they were slowly starting to circle him but were not acting overly aggressive but were definitely getting into a position to make a move if that's what they decide , he said that he had his gun and could kill them if needed ( as he put it they the ones in danger ) but he said he was planning on being out for a long time ( he would bush camp through Alaskan winter's this guy was a legend ) and he said 1 bullet is potential food and they are a limited resource .. so he said he cut off a leg joint and threw it to the alpha it drragged it off and the rest followed ( this is my favorite part of his story ) he said I learns something about life that day .. you don't need to bribe everyone as long as you bribe the right one )😁

I've got a lot of back country experience here in Idaho, both on foot and horseback, and I'm pretty confident in my survival skills, plus being prepared for different contingencies, etc. etc. I've dealt with wolves and bears in the wild, and we've had a bunch of lion encounters this year. My first encounter with wolves, they acted completely indifferent to me, just as Glenn has said, because in that case, they were interested in one of my horses. After shooting one of them, the rest became disinterested very quickly. This guy is someone you DEFINITELY want to be with in a survival situation. He's levels above me
