I'm a retired Army Officer who spent 11 years in the Corps as well and went through the MCMAP program. Military movies are usually so bad that I can't even watch them. But this was a refreshing movie to watch. I was convinced that the lead actor was a prior Marine...then I found out he's British. If that doesn't scream "NAILED IT!" nothing does.

I didn't know he was British and I was curious if American audiences realised it and clearly if you didn't spot it, he handled the accent accurately enough. He's a really good actor and I'd love to see him in more action films - but he can clearly handle any role they throw at him.

The reason I enjoyed this whole so much is because it was his INTELLIGENCE that won the day. Sure, you can be a physical specimen and a master fighter. But intelligence is really important for a tactician, and that's what was on display here the entire time.

I thought this was a fantastic movie. What I appreciated about the main character was that he went out of his way to injure and not kill people. He was always calm and respectful.

I asked the director a little bit about this on twitter and this was his response: "Aaron sprinted through training before and during the shoot. The amazing stunt team + military advisors translated the detailed fight sequences I wrote into something that passed the 'legit' test. MCMAP is a mix of disciplines, so we used Jiu jitsu, wrestling, whatever worked." The first part about Aaron sprinting through training is important because behind-the-scenes John Boyega was originally cast, and begun filming, as Terry before he left the project for a family emergency. Aaron was brought in and probably had very little time to learn all this, but he did it spectacularly. A lot of Jeremy's films have this sort of realism to them, which I think adds to the tension, but this is one of the few times he actually has an expert as a main character. So while I don't have names of the military advisors, Jeremy's commitment to keeping things grounded definitely helps with why they got it so right. Favorite film by far from him, but obviously love Green Room and Blue Ruin. However, there is one particular scene in Hold The Dark that you might be interested in looking at.

I’m stationed at the city where the movie was filmed. John Boyega (escaped storm trooper who became a main character from new Star Wars trilogy) was originally cast. I couldn’t see him casted in this role I walked on the set unknowingly. Got some food from the food truck and tried to pay. Dude was like, “the food is free on set.” That’s when I saw some of the actors in 2021 when they first started filming the movie. It’s right next to Fort Johnson (aka POLK).

I have tried watching this movie twice and have not been able to do so. Civil Asset Forfeiture is so prevalent, especially in smaller police departments where it seems to be used to supplement their budgets. It is not used as it should, and has become legal theft. I was pulled over for speeding 6 years ago in Long Beach, CA, (NOT a small city) and literally, the police officer ask me how much cash I had on me. When I asked "why", he said he was trying to figure out if I was doing something illegal. NO CRIME HAS TO BE COMMITTED for them to seize your stuff! By the way, I did not get a ticket, so . . . The police can claim they suspected you were going to use and asset to commit a crime, or that it is the result of a crime, and take it from you . . . it is not only cash; they can take your jewelry, cars, boats, houses and anything else they want . . . good luck getting it back!

** As a former Marine, who DIDNT deploy, amd who was a former Martial Arts instructor, I appreciated the concept. I do have to say...there was some goody parts to the movie. Specifically towards the end. Its "funny" how it became about the "bunny" at the end. 😮‍💨🥴 But that's just my nit pick. Also, my pet peeve with the Corp is that we love to say is that "every marine is a rifleman". And that just aint true. It could be. My suggestion is that to have a MCTAP program. (Marine Corp Tactical Assessment Program) where you earn your marksman, sharpshooter, expert, badges. And there could be ither badges created for that too. It would involve EVERY marine MOS doing tactical drills and scenarios in their sectors. Motor T, Cooks, Admin Supply, and so on. You would do "room" clearing, basic TCCC, co worker rescue........ And these would count towards your rank. I think the Corpb would benefit so much from this and honestly it might shore up retention. Kets get back to what our tradition was and not just be anither statement that doesn't hold any water. 10/3/2024 update. Looks like what I was talking about somewhat is coming into play. I think Tyler Grey said it best on one of your shows about how Hollywood has to make things "realistic" for the audience in the theatre, as opposed to reality based realism. Interesting side bar - when I was posted in Calgary, they were filming the battle scenes from "Legends of the Fall" out in the foothills outside of town. The local reserve infantry unit had put together a rifle section of dudes that were literally. using the tactics out of the Canadian Army Infantry manual for the period...the director saw them putting in attacks and said "That looks completely unrealistic and nobody will believe it, so we're going with it my way 9or words to that effect)"...despite it being as realistic as it gets because that's literally what they actually did. Don't get me going about Owen Williams running through a minefield of PROM1's daisy chained together in "Behind Enemy Lines"...can't/won't watch that film to this day out of spite because of seeing the results of what those fucking things do to people and at what range they're capable of doing it on my first overseas deployment. BTW, bought "Better Off Broken", thoroughly enjoyed it 👍👍. SK

Frankly I like it more that way. It felt more grounded somehow. Like "Why am I rooting for the guy that kills people like fudder until he gets to the main boss?" The fact he uses stealth and low visibility to end a fight was scratching at just the right place. I love it when they use strategy. Like I legit groan at guns in fantasy because they take out most of the fun. I am sure you can have good strategy with a gun. But the Gore usually blinds me to it. Like for example suppressors in movie. They don't shoot that silently? The only time I actually thought a gun scene was cool. Was because of short animation on the premise that the sniper was the only one left. And even then I was more impressed by the fluidity.

By the way, although it’s been a minute since I retired, you could be kicked out of the Marine Corps for multiple rifle range failures. We don’t have non-combatants.

For most of us, MCMAP is just something to do for promotions. There's some that take it seriously. It works pretty well if you train the sparring part, too. Otherwise you might as well be one of those 12 y/o black belts cause you'd fair about as well in an actual fight.

We had a TINY Fella about 5'7" 145... SFC Spreen Sandhill, Ft. Benning. Before he was our instructor he was one of the top guys for the Marine hand-to-hand... One day during training 2 soldiers both above 6ft both above 230lbs get serious and start really going at it. They other 2 instructors moved to intervene and he just waved them off and yelled "BREAK IT UP" Then he said "ONE MORE TIME... BREAK IT UP!" Then like some mongoose slid in between and hit both with elbows in the chest to seperate them, then immediately hit the smaller large fella with an uki goshi, and the larger a seoi nage. ALL 30-35 of us audibly gapsed, it sounded like. That moment showed Me how proper skill and techniques can level a lot of planning fields.

I was pleasantly surprised while viewing it! the main character was a believable person for once. John Wick was so anime it wasn't believable. Small towns? hate them! they are always trying to make budget which causes them to use unorthodox methods to procure funds. I avoid small towns and looked out for speed traps! I was a small arms Weapon Instructor (SAWI), Attended the course as a SSGT. The Corps is not going to invest much money and assets in someone on his first tour of duty cause if they decide to get out, they take all that training with them.....A waste of money! Most Marines would pick that detail up on a second tour! got to get your pound of beef outa them first! lol! Most "B" billeted schools came with a re-enlistment, or you volunteered upon extending your service. At lease that was during the time I was in.......

The movie was a movie. My comment is about the vibe i get from you guys and how you communicate the subject matter with each other and the audience. There is a lot of talking heads that post similar matter but you guys make it easy. Keep doing what doing. Much success.

Also marines qualify at 500yds as standard. So getting expert in the marine corp isnt always a guarantee, but getting 2nd 3rd or 4th qualification for expert says you understand the fundamentals to make windcalls at distance efficiently.

Yeah, I was in 4 years, 3x expert, 1x marksman.. but in my defense I had half a lung filled with fluid when I got the marksman :D

As one of those infantry Marines that pulled a couple of deployments it was great having a movie with the main character wasn't SOF. Even if they had made him just your run of the mill Marines I think it would have been good. Hell most of those MCMAP instructors come from different backgrounds.

You should do a review of One Shot and One More Shot sometime. Very cool movies with good looking gun play. They star Scott Adkins who was in John Wick 4 and that Jamie Fox vampire movie. But I’d interested to see what you think of them!

It's called "Failure to adapt" but when i went through in 2018, my drill sgts shot targets for soldiers to pass the final weapons qual.

Saw the PACE clip and was wondering what this movie was. Looks really good will be watching this tonight. Also listening to him talk about Denver PD makes me glad I live in the Springs instead of Denver.

Very intelligent and deliberate action film that's an evolution path of the genre. I also really liked the intro scene when the main character was pulled over. The dialogue wasn't "movie"-ish and very realistic. The movie also doesn't try to go for obvious stereotypes. Refreshing watch

Not all Marines get expert rifle qual. And failing to at least make marksman fails in basic and Marines cannot get promoted

Not all, but something like 60% shoot expert. Hell, I was a shooting coach shooting expert in both rifle and pistol as a LCpl. I woulda lost my mind if I shot sharpshooter.

Have a look for Strike Back, it’,s a UK series with a premise of MI6 and outcast SAS and CIA mixed teams. There were a few series some got a bit far fetched but the ops running and drills looked sick.

I think it was a well-made and quite enjoyable movie. I can second your comments about the inability of some police officers to hit a barn door at 5 yards. Those of us who are ex-services tended to be much more proficient than most non-services police officers. Most, not all. Some are keen and do go to the range in their own time to improve. But I worked with some officers who I would definitely want to be standing behind when they had to deploy their sidearms! I have seen comments in some quarters about Aikido not being a real martial art, which is nonsense. It most certainly is and officers in the Met Police (London) and Hong Kong Police, the two police forces I served in, were both instructed in Aikido. It's actually a highly suitable martial art for law enforcement, with it's ability to easily exert physical control over those resistant to arrest. Like any martial art, unless you practice to a high degree of proficiency, it's unlikely to be effective (rather like sufficient practice on the range with firearms!). But if you know what you're doing, it's highly effective.

My department used the six shooter for smoke and CS gas. My department was also the largest in my state but we did not have the less than lethal weaponry that smaller departments had. And to that point there is a scene where Terry discovers that this small town department had an arsenal in the evidence locker

I remember a police involved shooting at a Starbucks in Portland. 4 cops shot at a suspect inside the Starbucks from outside. There was busted glass over the doorway and holes in the ceiling from maybe 8 yards.

i’ve watched the movie twice and can honestly say i enjoyed it both times. it was refreshing take on an action movie. don’t get me wrong i like explosions and shoot outs and over the top fights scenes. but this movie was very entertaining and done well
