In my opinion, he is definitely one of thee greatest bass players of modern rock and in rock in general. Yeah he may play easy stuff in Green Day but when you listen to his bass playing in albums like Dookie he truly is one of the most underrated bass players of today.

@carlosmatos98486 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. Mike is a good bassist. A lot of his bass lines are easy but his technique and style take a fair amount of talent. He's locked in with Tre, they never get sloppy at all. Plus his tone is awesome. It's warm, but he hits the strings hard and gets that bright spanky tone that cuts through.

Mike Dirnt is seriously underrated. People just assume he's okay because he plays with Green Day, which most people think of it as "simple". Sure, that's arguable if you put'em up against bands like The Who or Led Zeppelin or Rush, but damnnnnn Mike is something else!
@vnctmrn9 жыл бұрын
+Shadownet I always think green day could be a band with so awesome guitar, bass, drum etc stuff. Billie Joe is a actually a really, really good guitarist, he just doesn't show off that much, Tre is an awesome drummer, and Mike a really awesome bassist. But they're music is still my favourite... Ok I don't know if that has even made any sense

Playing bass doesn't really put your arm at work...
@sophielambros50809 жыл бұрын
AtrumCimex It doesn't for me, but I have seen videos of performances where Mike uses his arm a lot. I don't use my arm much in the same way that he does but it looked very tiring.

@sophielambros50809 жыл бұрын
AtrumCimex I usually use my fingers or thumb but a pick when I can be bothered. I would have thought that it would be difficult to keep control and accuracy when you're using large arm movements, but if it's easy then I shall give it a go!

@klawis4 жыл бұрын
People gotta understand that difficult is not synonymous to great. Sometimes, simplicity can make you great player. Mike Dirnt for example, you can see his fine skills on their early stuffs (39 smooth to Insomniac). Green Day songs can be easy to play but those are already classics.
@pumajlr3 жыл бұрын
I listen to Green Day for years ("duh dude, we see your profile pic") but at some point, one day at random, i pay attention to the bass for the fist time... and i realize how much i love it and how much of the sound comes from there. Since then i have huge respect for Mike Dirnt.

Like Mike, I was a "really great mediocre guitarist" switched to bass and felt right at home playing and writing songs. I think having that guitar background influences his style with all the chords and hammer-ons he plays here for ex. 1:20 as I kind of do the same thing quite a bit and don't usually play typical bass lines. I'm not even a huge Green Day fan but Dirnt is such a great guy and I love this bass. It's high up on my want list.

I wish he'd start using an amp when they record/play live. Lmao, seriously though. The thing that makes me so upset is how low the volume of the bass is in Green Day's music. The bass line in When I come Around is awesome, but it's so hard to hear it, and it's loud compared to their newer stuff! I swear some songs there's not even bass!
@XneverstopfightingX10 жыл бұрын
He uses that 300 watt super bassman behind him. We can blame the low bass volume on KZbin compression/gating and retarded sound engineers...
@LukeyPooky10 жыл бұрын
I just don't think he turns the volume up enough on his amp in the studio/playing live. If you listen to Rancid, you can hear Tim Armstrong's bass very clearly compared to Green Day. Also, I've seen both both Green Day and Weezer concerts, and with Weezer, you could hear the bass lines, and even hear it clearly when I recorded it with my iPhone. At the Green Day concert I went to, it was like Mike Dirnt was down in the casino during the concert or something. I mean, I could see him on stage playing, but he might as well of just put his bass down on the stage and stood there doing backup vocals, there would be no audible difference.
@That_many_watts10 жыл бұрын
LukeyPooky28 you do realize that its actually the front of house guys that control his level, the bass amps on stage are more of tone not for volume, all the amps on stage are probably not even being used, thats just the way modern sound is setup these days
@LukeyPooky10 жыл бұрын
noah Watkins That's not the case in Rancid, man. Look up them playing Maxwell Murder live, and you'll see the role that the bass player in the band is.

Yeah… I had the Artist series Mike Dirnt antique /white/banana yellow Bass. I could not get the damn thing to stop buzzing. Turns out that the neck was twisted so much that even taking it to a professional the only thing they could do is replace the neck. It was my first bass, heck my first stringed instrument in 15+/- years. I couldn’t afford a new neck or to buy a better made bass at the time. I was newly enlisted and my pay was pretty basic. Now 20 year later I’m looking to get back into playing and came across one of these… I’m a fan of Mr. Dirnt’s but I’m scared to go with another one of these. I love the tele headstock so that’s another reason for my draw to these.
