@@e-heromanny4348From the other album reviews I’ve seen, Anthony doesn’t really seem to like pop punk (or at least mainstream pop punk) from the past 20 years outside of like 1 or 2 exceptions. He doesn’t even like the biggest pop punk album of the 21st century (American Idiot). And that’s fair and he can like what he likes and dislike what he dislikes. But in that regard he’s definitely operating from a biased mindset. Anyone who has enjoyed pop punk moderately at any point in their life would see this album as a pretty solid release. But since Anthony doesn’t like the genre, he’s gonna dislike the album. It would be like me (someone who hates country music) trying to review a Chris Stapleton album. Even if he’s considered “one of the good ones”, I don’t have that frame of reference because I just don’t like the genre at all. So I would probably just give all his albums 3s or 4s too because of personal bias and taste. And you shouldn’t take my review seriously if that’s the case because I have a bias against the genre as a whole.

@ryanmcclure95539 ай бұрын
If Green Day included a few lyrics about the color of Billie Joe Armstrong’s bootyhole, Fantano probably would’ve given it an 8. ‘Saviors’ is back to basics, but also always subtly reminding everyone that Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt know how to play their instruments. The 1/3 beat hiccup in the instrumental on “One Eyed Bastard”. The bass turnarounds on the “Strange Days” chorus. Dirnt’s relentless bass line to fade out “Coma City”. Tre’s signature genius-but-nondescript style, somehow more honed and intentional. The way the string-drop in “Father to a Son” didn’t feel cheesy, because Mike Dirnt started ripping some nasty shit out of nowhere on his bass underneath. “Lollll I’m Billie Joe Armstrong I’m so crazyyyyy” - every other song on this album is related to Billie’s alcoholism. And how it has intersected with fame and family life. Forgive him for sardonically quoting what he imagines his friends, family, and fans think about him. Billie’s lyrics and mood reflect not only his personal story, but also the national mood heading into 2024. The lyrics are also way more observational than preachy. Per most other reviews of this album, people feel like they’re sighing alongside Green Day, not sitting in a lecture. Fantano didn’t like this album because it was for Green Day fans, which he is not. It’s easy to miss some cool stuff. The verse melody of “Strange Days” is nearly note-for-note the melody of “Revolution Radio”’s chorus. But the tone and lyrics of the songs are complete opposites. I think it’s a clever nod. The “Jesus of Suburbia” character was mentioned for the first time in 20 years in the same song, which is neat for fans. Cavallo produced an album for the lads again (and it sounds full, bright, and very reminiscent of American Idiot). Just let them cook bruh. Green Day isn’t gonna reinvent the wheel. There’s a reason that they’re the biggest superstars to emerge from their era. Critics have always wanted them to be what they aren’t every step along their career - all while they continue to sell out arenas. Who are the real “saviors” of Rock and Roll? EDM musicians who sample Black Sabbath riffs, or Green Day, who are about to run the nation’s biggest rock tour since they last did it with the Hella Mega tour? If Fantano ever gives a Green Day album a positive review, that’s how I’ll know ahead of time that it’s a shit album.

@Home-u6g8 ай бұрын
@@felixorozco4055 I can agree with the snares. Billies voice is definitely not overprduced or anything here, he's just singing cleaner, so that's not really a production thing The main part of this production is everything is really well balanced, the rhythm section is just as audible as the guitars, and the volume is smooth. American idiot on the other hand was released during the loudness wars, so the volume is trying to be as loud as possible as much as possible, and the wall of guitars is the highest priority, leaving a much less balanced level of production

I liked it. Sure some lyrics are eh and can be a little too “on the nose”. But then again we get lyrics like “we all die young some day” and “Ever since Bowie died it hasn’t been the same” that are great. You also gotta give it to the melodies and band performance. Glad to hear Dirnt get some old school bass riffs like on 1981 or Tre doing some actual great fills on Coma City. Billie steps into new territory with Tom Petty-like feels with Suzie Chapstick that I love. I also think Dilemma is the best song they have made since American Idiot-era. Overall I think it is a solid 4 out of 5. Nothing that blows you out of the water but as a band that has been doing it for so long it is amazing that they can put together a fresh take on their sound. (Corvette Summer is actually kinda fun).

I get most people not familiarized with the context of punk rock continue to put Green Day in the punk bag, but they’ve never labeled themselves as punks in terms of their music. They came out as kids who played in the independent scene where 90% of the bands happened to play punk rock and that wasn’t even the music they grew into. They're punk rock for their labor in the community and the scene even theese days. They've always claim Gilman's scene philosophy -no homophobia, no racism, no sexism, just community- is not politics, but a lifestyle for them. And speaking about music, Billie Joe’s major influences where The Beatles, Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Cheap Trick and that kind of stuff. That's such a lame way to excuse an album. "Just pretend the band hasn't set a substantially higher bar by releasing far better music in the past". You could use that excuse for anything, if you erase your mind of any and all good albums ever made you could conceptualize any terrible album as "good" by simply ignoring any album that puts its quality into perspective. I don't care about the album one way or another, and if you like it cool, but I really don't think that's a good way to justify an album, when I can just go listen to any of their other stuff and have a better time.

The first several singles didn’t do much for me but at least they were clearly better than anything they’d put out in a long time. It wasn’t until I saw the video of them playing in the New York subway that this thing really clicked for me. My head started bobbing immediately from the first song of that live performance and I was thinking they were playing one of their old songs but I soon realized that they were mostly doing material from the new album and I quickly realized that a lot of these songs are pretty great and seeing so many people in the audience singing along with every word of these songs that just came out is also a good sign that this is resonating with people a lot more than their last few records.
