I appreciate that the line isn’t, “God ‘forgive’ me” but, “God help me”. Seeking help is admirable and should be encouraged. Seeking forgiveness is self-serving and misses the point. It is reminiscent of when we were infants and, it was only after being held that our anguish was mechanically suppressed. We aren’t here to change or to do anything so much as we are here to discover why we did and did not do everything.
@matthewbarnes70298 ай бұрын
@the.seagull.35 I would leave them.
@matthewbarnes70298 ай бұрын
I think you meant to ask, “Would you admire them if they asked for help with some problem that led to their cheating as opposed to asking for forgiveness” But yeah I would no longer remain in a relationship with someone who knows something is wrong and does it anyway in the context you described. Edit: What would you do?
@matthewbarnes70298 ай бұрын
@the.seagull.35 I agree that there is value in seeking forgiveness but, not in actually asking forgiveness from the person you have wronged. It places the burden of alleviating your own suffering on the other person. In a sense it adds insult to injury because not only have you hurt them in some way, but you also ask that in addition to that pain they must also relieve you of your guilt. There is nobility in feeling guilt. Forgiveness only obtains reflexively not relationally. I.e. forgiving yourself is important but another’s is merely a formality or to signal one’s virtue to some audience. Personally, there are things I have done that I look back on and still wince and know that, had I not done those things, certain lives might have gone better or less pain would have been had by certain people at certain times. To me the wrongs I have done are like a scars that extend through time. Life grows around them and beyond them but, when I check my memory, I cannot forget what I have done and so I do not forgive myself for doing those things. I have gotten better and continue to do better by those around me especially those I claim to love. But the past remains. What happened happened and, pretending otherwise is childish. It is a moral mirage that forgiveness changes anything. Best case scenario it desensitizes us to the pain we’ve wrought which makes us feel better. Worst case scenario it compels us to deny our own wrongdoings which all but guarantees we will repeat our mistakes in a different context and under congruent circumstances. Don’t shrug the burden or ask someone to carry it for you. Grow stronger and always remember how weak you once were. Be grateful you have realized your wrongness and have changed for the better. Don’t seek another’s opinion of you in place of your own. Know thyself. Grind a mirror out of diamond and carry it next to your heart so that, whenever you so choose, you may hold it up and see your ugly, beautiful, rotten and pure self in all its wretched glory. That is how God sees you anyways.
