amazing song amazing voice, i remember me granny singing this song to me back in Bantry bay when i was a young child. sadly my brother was killed in Bantry when he was only 20 back in 1972 and in my heart he wil always be 20. when i look at the one picture i have of him that has travelled well and is battered from time it feels like i spoke to him only yesterday. thanku for posting these beautiful songs x

My darling Colleen and I traveled from Virginia to see Tommy in Dublin two years ago. When I reflect on that enchanted evening I always think of this heartbreaking song and how almost everyone sitting near us was singing along with every word. I willl never forget the old man just to our right who was looking down at his folded hands with tears running down his cheeks. The memory always brings tears to my eyes, but they are quickly replaced by a smile as I remember the magic of those few minutes. Perhaps the greatest anti-war song ever written, performed by the brightest jewel in the crown of Irish traditional music.

now, 4 years later I rediscovered Tommy Fleming's repertoire again... and made a playlist to replay it on and on.... what a voice... what a delicate singer. Yes, he really is THE VOICE OF IRELAND. He represents everything IRELAND stands for !! All the dignity of the Irish is captured in the beautiful lines of this wonderful song....

I'm crying as I'm listening to him on this song ... So very heartfelt and very very moving ... I'm French and this song always makes me cry . Never will be forget ... They died for our freedom . Never will we forget that they lost their lives as they were so young and died for us to be free ... And I've just discovered Tommy Fleming lately ... He is such a wonderful singer ... It's one of the most emotional versions of this song I've ever heard ...

FYI This song was written by Eric Bogle. His original version is excellent as are many of his other songs. June Tabor also does an excellent version. The really bad thing abour war is that at the end only the horrible number of the dead is known and there is no way to tell how many lived because of the war.
