The greenbottle blue tarantula (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens) is notorious for its beauty and ease of care as a pet spider. They have the most spectacular greens, blues, and oranges. It is no wonder that they are very popular pets. But are they actually good pets? Is the greenbottle blue tarantula the best pet spider for you?

My husband got one about a year ago; I was so nervous when he brought her home because I've always been scared of spiders. She's so pretty and fun to watch that I've totally fallen in love with her. She's really helped me overcome my fear of spiders. Now when I find spiders at work I always make sure to put them in a safe place so that my co-workers won't squish them.

I grew up in Paraguana peninsula in Northwestern Venezuela, and these little guys were EVERYWHERE. They would infest homes all the time, and, as a kid, I found them more than once hiding under a chair. I always looked under the chair before I sat! Lots of people kept them as pets in glass bottles for years and years. They'd forget about them because they're so hardy and require little maintenance, almost to their detriment. I always liked to see them from a distance, because they are dropdead gorgeous; there weren't many other animals with those colors in that area, save for a few blue-green lizards and iguanas! (Sadly I was too young to know exactly what kinds of lizards they were) Cool to see you featuring them on your vids! Keep up the awesome work, Clint. :)

Honestly, I agree with you for 90% of beginners but if someone is a very well researched beginner and they know what they’re getting themselves into and they don’t plan on handling I think they’ll probably be OK. What wouldn’t be good is a beginner getting one thinking of this is gonna be something chill like my H Chilensis lol

This was my second tarantula! I absolutely love them and I picked it because of the heavy webbing and how gorgeous they are but currently mine is a small speed demon and very willing to throw hairs and threat pose, they’re also a juvenile so I’m guessing some of that will chill out as they get older and the stripy little abdomen they have as juveniles is adorable

A few tips if you are interested in a GBB: 1. All of the handful of GBBs I have owned are somewhat picky eaters. So make sure you monitor for uneaten prey because as Clint said, it can munch on your beautiful GBB during moult. 2. A GBB will not resist climbing - to the extent that I consider them semi-arboreal. If there's a tarrantula that you want to house in a cube tank, this is definitely one since it will utilise a lot of the vertical space, unlike the fully terrestrial species. 3. Don't bother adding any deco that you actually want to see because chances are they will be webbed over. Don't bother with hides either - the T will web its own hide. Branches and vines are the way to go. 4. GBB is a terrible tarantula for a bioactive tank. (a) your plant will be webbed over and (b) the dry/bone-dry condition that the T prefers will kill most plants. 4b. GBB is best T for a Halloween theme tank. Or a Spiderman theme tank.

Big kudos to mentioning always adding a water dish even though it's a contested topic!! So many people think that arid Ts don't need them, or they can drown in them. Research shows that they're incredibly beneficial, and I and my friends have witnessed both of my arid Ts face down in their water dish at least once a week, downing the whole thing. Awesome video, Clint and Joey!

I love Clint's humor 😂 For some mostly-will-never-use knowledge - According to some dictionary entries, "greenbottle" is defined as "a common dipterous fly, Lucilia caesar, that has a dark greenish body with a metallic lustre and lays its eggs in carrion" Went down the fly rabbit hole and found that these flies were named greenbottle flies because the iridescent green sheen on the flies was reminiscent of the glass green botttles and vials were made from specifically. And so the tarantula was named after the fly, which was named after the glass. Thanks, Google 🤓

Oh, I've been to Great Basin Serpentarium's booths at expos before! Cool to see them featured, really awesome folks. Also, this was my first tarantula species! I love them so much. My first one died shortly after I got it, unfortunately. She was very gentle, not flighty, could easily be handled (although we never handled her because we were still a bit timid of her as she was our first) not very food motivated, and she was very slow all the time. We got her as an adult female. Our second GBB is the complete opposite, super flighty and prone to kick hairs, super food aggressive (provides amazing take downs), and is such a fast spider. She's been our only escapee and has two different enclosure breaches on her records. Also confirmed female, and raised from a sling. I thought GBBs were beginner friendly based on my first, but after the second, I agree they're a bit more of an intermediate species, 3/5 feels like a good score to me. It's definitely an INCREDIBLE one to have nonetheless, and if you're determined enough you certainly could keep it as your first tarantula, I did hahaha but just make sure you're ready for speed, because they can move FAST when they want to. Not as fast as some old worlds, of course, but faster than you'd expect a spider to move if it's your first spider.

Very interesting- how did you find her when she got out? In college, the guys that lived next door to my boyfriend LOST their tarantula…. (well, it lost ITSELF & got out!!) One of their girlfriends ‘found’ it under the fridge several months later, & she never came back!!
@flareon1368
@flareon1368 Жыл бұрын
@TurtleJeepJen Both escapes happened while feeding and rehousing, so my partner and I were right there and able to grab her and put her back almost right away, with very minimal chasing down, and in fact the second time she ran out quite a ways, but actually before we could scoop her up with a catch cup she ran from us right back into her enclosure. I don't know what we'd do if we actually lost one, if it were to get out on its own while we weren't around, although there are some tried and true methods for finding escaped Ts I know some people do, sich as putting down flour or baby powder on the ground and look for footprints. You can put out water stations and hope it'll show up at one of them. Also just searching along the corners of where walls and floors meet since they'll likely travel along those, and always checking things like clothing and shoes before putting them on because they'll huddle into tight dark spaces when no dirt is present for digging. I think there are several other methods, too, so if I did lose one, I'd try as many things as I could to find it and otherwise tell housemates and guests to keep an eye out

YES CLINT! THANKYOU! I SUGGESTED THIS ONE MULTIPLE TIMES. It was my first pet tarantula ever, and I even took in a rehomed one as my third tarantula. Sadly my first one passed away. This is a great tarantula species for a beginner IF you do your research. They're very fast and loooove to kick hairs but if you can handle that, they'll be an amazing first pet tarantula. Make sure to offer them plenty of anchor points for webbing and things for them to climb!

Wonderful video! I have just shy of a dozen tarantulas and if I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the Greenbottle Blue. They're gorgeous, reasonably fast growing, super easy to care for due to their preference for bone dry substrate, reach a good size of around 6", are great eaters and just really enjoyable to watch since they're usually out in the open wandering about and webbing up their enclosure. I wouldn't recommend trying to handle one due to their generally nervous disposition and ability to bolt much faster than most new world tarantulas, but for a hands off "look but don't touch" kind of pet I couldn't think of a more thoroughly delightful tarantula to own than the GBB. =)

I don't know for sure, but I know that 'bottle shine' in old bird descriptions meant that feathers had a different color 'shine' than the base feather color. Like how crows have a purple/green effect to their feathers in bright sunlight. So I always assumed that is how the GBB got their name.😅

Park keepers were advertising the park to see who wanted to do the mandatory community service there and they brought that tarantula to convince us how awesome it would be. I was the only one who wanted to handle it. I held it on my hand and it slowly walked from my hand all the way to my shoulder while leaving a web trail. I was mesmerized. Such incredibly beautiful creature. 10/10 would hold again.

I have my GBB in a 7.4 gallon shallow tank (with a ventliated lid) right on my desk where I work at home. She uses all the space, loves to wander around and is surprisingly active when it comes to hunting down the poor crickets and other critters I feed her. Absolutely gorgeous spider but I do not (EVER) handle her. She's simply too skittish and insanely fast. In the six years I've had her I have had to remove her from the tank once to repair a cracked panel and she didn't run away from my hands. She teleported. Across the room. In half a second. Yeah. Luckily she wasn't injured as I had placed the tank on the floor to minimize that risk.

I once considered this species as a first tarantula for me. Then it was Cyriocosmus elegans. But finally I decided, that I'm happy with the amount and types of inverts in my care (for now)...

Such a beautiful tarantula! I love the "Best Pet" videos because you never know if it will be an animal that would make a reasonable pet or if it will be a completely unreasonable animal for the average person...which are very informative because they will hopefully make people stop & think before they get an unreasonable animal when there are so many fantastic options that are reasonable. One more thing...the off topic discussions in these videos often make me giggle!

My first tarantula was a GBB, got her as a sling, lived about 4 years and found out she had a bad molt and got impacted unfortunately. I'm glad to see the GBB is more timid T, but man mine was quick tempered, got threat posed many times, some strike attempts, hairs kicked at me, and that was just trying to clean poo on the sides lol. I attempted to handle her ONCE! I was cleaning poo, yet again, and she decided to walk up the side and reached the lip, so I just held my hand out, she touched my hand a few times and was like, nope! And went back to her hiding hole. Fun pet, best pet I've ever had, always had great conversations at pet stores when buying crickets, everyone always had questions because they never heard of a GBB so it was like showing pictures of a dog or something and people would crowd around to look at it. Boy those were good times! Last story about her, I had cousins from out of town stay at my place and the T always stayed in my spare bedroom in the corner. So my cousins came late that night, I showed them where to sleep in the spare bedroom and didn't say a word. They knew I had a pet T but they didn't ask any questions that night and they are terrified of spiders! So the next morning they wake up all refreshed, I already downed some coffee and they finally asked where the T was and I said nonchalantly, "Oh, you slept with her last night." Boy did their eyes widen! So I was like, "See? Nothing to worry about." Needless to say, I had to relocate the enclosure to another room for the duration of their stay after their urgent request LOL.

I definitely think the GBB is prettier as a sling through juvenile. I'll have to add that I have CVD. It is because of their interesting patterns in the early stages that I find to be interesting. I will probably add another GBB to our collection. They are so easy to care for being semi arid, and always on display.

Very cool Tarantula species for the intermediate collector and a favorite in the hobby and pop singer, Billie Eilish. I think the Trichonephila clavipes; FKA Nephila clavipes or Gold Silk Banana Spider would also make a good candidate for this channel. They are prevalent in the southeastern United States. I have found them in South Carolina, and they are fairly intimidating at first, but are pleasant to handle, and aren’t inclined to bite. Plus they are stunning and majestic in their black and yellow scheme to match the gold silk they extract to build their enormous webs. Eliot Stanton of Cobweb Castle has and does keep them and had an enclosure made for them, called the “Spider Tower” or something similar. One dealer I buy from at expos, Corey Chapman of American Invertebrates will carry these spiders when they are season, in the spring and summer months. Otherwise, I have never seen these spiders at expos or pet shops. So, buying them online may be your only option in attaining them, unless you live in the American Southeastern states; primarily Florida and Georgia, I think.

I double majored in Entomology at KU. I had a professor who got tarantula hairs LITERALLY kicked INTO his eyeballs, like tiny splinters! They couldn’t remove them or do anything for him. So, imagine living your life KNOWING that you HAD spider hairs in your eyes????!! (Would you ever have to tell someone you were dating, or would they NOTICE??!) so weird & interesting!!
