I never found this game to be bad. I enjoyed the difficulty somewhat and the graphics. I'm probably one of the few that enjoyed a lot of the bad Genesis games as a kid 😅

You’re not alone. I also had some fun with it. I’m very forgiving with flawed games as long as I find the overall game to be enjoyable. I have had a lot of fun with games that a lot of people bash. I really like Sega Lord’s videos, but not a fan of his reviews. You can tell on his gameplay footage that he wasn’t really trying to play the game properly. Wasn’t timing his jumps properly at all. You can’t enjoy something you don’t want to enjoy. My advice is to not be nitpicking and just play games for what they are, not what they should be, or what you wanted them to be. You might have a good time.

I honestly enjoyed it too. I bought the game and wasn't disappointed. I liked the music a lot. Years later i heard the song, "Tonight Tonight" by Hot Chelle Rae (2011). It's totally ripping off Greendog. Search the song and go about twenty seconds in. I had never heard the song but at my son's job he said the play a song over and over that goes "la la la... La la la..." At first I sang along but I was confused how i knew it... Then it hit me! Greendog!

And I honestly don't understand the bashing it gets from reviewers. Angry Video Game Nerd threw the game in molten lava while dangling on a helicopter over a volcano, I mean come on? There are far worse games on the console that should be thrown into molten lava than this one like for example EA's ''Dark Castle'' but Greendog along wth Talespin seem to cop a bashing? Both a great games.

I once met Sega lord on an outer Caribbean cruise and he pushed in front me in line at the self service ice cream BUT he later led the entire ship in the electric slide to huge accolade. The captain thanked him and honestly the whole experience left me proud.

I beat this game back in the day. It wasn't great but the chances to play a new game were so few and far between that I ended up beating every game I could get my hands on, even when they were really testing my patience. I remember the skate levels being a pain.

I actually enjoyed this game back in the day. This review brings back memories of late night gaming with my cousin who recently passed away. We were both Sega fanboys to the core. At the time i didn’t know any better and I thought it was a great game. I wouldnt care about it today but it does make me miss him whenever I c this title mention or I happen to c it in my collection. If u can r set ur hood expectations 30 years back, it’s an ok game.

Greendog is so uninteresting in all aspects from the mediocre gameplay, graphics to the subpar sound which shows the gulf in quality between Sega of America and Sega of Japan and what’s worse is the dudes who did the music for Greendog also did the music for god awful Batman Returns and the equally terrible Tailspin so the poor pedigree ensured that the sound was going to suck.

First time I saw Greendog was on a VHS tapes that came with Mean Machines that also showed Sonic 2. I played a friends copy after it was released but I couldn't get into it.

I wonder if Greendog's girlfriend who is drawn in a completely different art style was just a placeholder that they never bothered finishing. In the intro a small portion of one of her breasts moving around strangely, and her eyes are completely hollowed out and you can see the background through them.

This was one of my childhood games when I was 6, not having my own money ment playing whatever I had. Overall I agree with your consensus on the game and I also think this was one of the best GEMS ost. When I got a Genesis again a couple years ago with a flash cart Greendog was one of the 1st games I fired up and the feels were something else. I plowed through the game in about 45 minutes and marveled at how much misery I went through when I was six just trying to get to the end.

This one is in the collection, given to me for free many years ago, still in box. I remember trying this thing out in Sears back in the day, when they had console kiosks set up wit NES, SNES, and Genesis stuff to play, and I remember Greendog being in it. I knew when the game was given to me what exactly it was, but since it was free, I still took it in. A former coworker's son figured he grew out of gaming, and she gave his games to me, some SNES, some Genesis (some were sports games, one was Tiny Toons Acme All Stars, the one sports game I was alright with), but of course, ol' Greendog had to be in that group of games given to me.

I took a chance on Greendog when it was new because I thought it looked interesting enough. I ended up liking it quite a bit. I revisited it a few years back to see if I still liked it, and I did. Obviously, many people don't like the game. So I agree that it's worth it for people to try the game for themselves if they find the game appealing in some way. It's not the first time I ended up liking a game that didn't get the best reviews. It's nowhere near the best game on the Genesis, but there are far worse.

I rented this game a few times when I was around 8-10 years old, I didnt know of any reviews at the time and seem to remember enjoying it. I think it was even one of the first games I ever beat on hard difficulty! Part of that was due to only having the one game to play over the rental weekend though!

Imo the ppl who love this game see it as a relaxing walk along the beach and look at it's mechanics with the same sense of urgency. The mismatched sprites remind me of the juxtaposed art of a few story books I had in the 1980's

We were lucky enough to get a Genesis that came with Sonic 1 and 2 I believe, and those 2 pretty much set the bar for that system. This is way below that, but I see how some people could love it. I couldn't tolerate more than 5 minutes of that soundboard personally.

This has been an interesting video and comment section to see for someone who's never even played Green Dog. Half the comments seem to make reference to a "Game Sack" channel that apparently also reviewed this game, half the comments are praising it or reminiscing fondly. I won't lie, I can see the atmosphere that a lot of people seem to like in it. I'm not sure I'd be as amenable to it, if only because I think I played other games that might've delivered on said atmosphere more, but if I were there at the time and had this as part of my childhood... maybe I'd be there with you. Also, in the vain hopes SLX sees this... have you seen the massive dump of internal documents from Sega of America from the 90's over on the segaretro site? Kinda would be interested in you making a video on those and the things that management and marketing discuss in those papers. It might not be what you typically do, but I think it'd be interesting to have someone who was really a big SEGA-fan of the age give his perspective on what's being said and what was being discussed at such a high upper management level.

Back in the time, i saw an image of this game as a publicity for Genesis... It was also written that this game's graphics are digitized. Well, it may not be the most noticeble digitization in the world, but i guess that those forests in the background and some other elements are in fact rendered.

Love this game.. I can see how it’s not everyone’s cup of tea being that’s it a little slower pace. I thought the goofy sprite and atmosphere was fun and quirky.. reminded me kind of like a tropical Indiana Jones. I didn’t mind the simple level layout. I thought the graphics and sounds were good enough. Of course there are better games but I think there is fun to be had here. Your reviews are great, this just shows we all have our own experience. And I’m far from a hardcore gamer. I game for the nostalgia but I beat maybe 5% of games I play.. lol

This game gets a lot of flack but I come back to play it time and time again. I like the multi scrolling backgrounds, beach, jungle & underwear scenes and some of the catchy but not so great tunes. Not a great game but I’ve definitely played much worse games.

It's always interesting to hear other peoples take on a game. I always liked Greendog since I bought it back in the day. My favorite parts were actually the skating and rollerblading levels. I hated the underwater aquarium level when I was kid (still do... I remember there's a huge jump at the end that can totally ruin your day if you don't make it). It's also interesting that you praise Mystic Defender as a gem. That was, at the time, my least favorite game I had on Genesis and largely regarded it as a mistake purchase when I got it after playing it. It grew on me a bit, but I never really ever loved it.

Greendog has some of the most frustrating level designs I've come across in a Genesis platformer. I was one of those kids who couldn't afford many games growing up, so when I bought something, I PLAYED it. But I could never get through the whole thing. Those traps that send you back to earlier parts of the level drove me nuts!

This game quickly went to budget pricing not long after it's release at my local TRU. I grabbed it as my game funding at the time was limited. I was about quantity not quality at that period in my life. It was an OK play. For the $10 I believe what my teenage self paid, it was money well spent. Not the best game but the Genesis was capable of far worse during this era! Some of which I paid full price for like Batman Returns.

I got a free copy of this in the late 90s when everyone was abandoning their Mega Drive for the PlayStation. The cartridge was damaged and the music and sound effects were completely distorted, shrill and glitchy. After hearing the artist’s intention, I think my copy was an improvement

A game like this can serve as remake. I see a similarity to Fido Dido as a game sprite design language if they used actual source & made a better rendering polished . It would've been solid, has the potential for the for it. You really gave some great ideas to do so. Great video of about platforms not being just a staple but a industry standard and yes you're absolutely right the quality control of some these platformers are alot to be desired. As for Joe Redifer the dev team could have used a generic render of him I the game.

The next version of Phantasy Star will have answered what happened to three colonies from Parma. It will include Motavia and the D planet, and a few more planets in different star systems, and in the end it will stage well for a continuation of the series, in a manner similar to Star Wars, where there are people, who originated from Parma, who have adopted the darkness. The story would be fantastic. So many versions to come, and each one different, and each one played by old and new Phantasy Star fans alike.

Not the review I expected. Green Dog was always a staple in my Sega collection. It was never my favorite, but it's something I enjoy playing from to time. I don't think it could be compared to anything else, so I completely disagree about it being uninspired. It was always a unique title with an interesting difficulty.

I remember they started shitting on some great late 16 bit games when the new consoles were arriving.
