***ATTENTION*** Academy of Television Arts & Sciences: You need to immediately award an Emmy to Alex Vietmeier for Outstanding Direction in whatever category necessary. These Closer Look segments are so precisely constructed down to the fraction of a second, that make the pieces hugely comedic without feeling ham-handed or forced. So good. And don't leave out Seth Meyers, who can read in rapid time without flubbing a syllable and deliver the punchline on the dime. And he seems to be having so much fun, even laughing at his own jokes, which may be a comedic no-no, but in Seth's case, it makes the jokes even funnier. The writing staff need Emmys as well. Also, pay attention to his "Corrections" because that is groundbreaking stuff.

i think my favorite jokes are the ones he laughs at because he almost seems surprised like "that WAS good, wasn't it?" i think of all the modern late night show hosts, he's the one that evokes the same feeling johnny carson gave me as a kid. the sharp humor yet total empathy when needed. he's sincere and natural, like you said--not forced. with him it feels more like he's actually talking to you the audience intimately and not performing. To be honest, I don't know if he was that good before pandemic. i hadn't watched late night in years because no one hit me in the same carson or arsenio hall kinda way. but over lockdown i started watching all the monologues because they were as accurate as the news but at least had us laughing through tears. seth and colbert topped out at my favorites, because they really made it intimate filming from their homes. (for daytime, trevor noah did the same.) (and in a total british way john oliver somehow made us feel safe in the void while telling us how we're never really safe ever.) i digress. since pandemic ended seth's the only one i keep watching because he's still business casual, still pulling wally into bits, talks directly to the audience while looking dead ahead multiple times, and i think that's what we love. he kept us afloat and is still riding that ship and clearly loving it and i love it too lol. i still watched noah until he retired because he did the same. not so much "casual" but he kept his hair grown out and natural and i just thought, good! i thought he looked so much better filming from his basement with incredibly intelligent and edgy comedy, while somehow being completely endearing and it made it better that he looked so comfortable. ***ahem*** what i meant to say is i totally second this notion. with a write in for wally as best use of props, including but not limited to himself.
