I’m a native speaker in 3 languages: German, Russian and English. And I’m fluent in Spanish. So I dominate 3 groups: Germanic, Slavic and romance. So I understand a lot of Dutch and Afrikaans, especially in text. I understand a lot of Ukrainian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Slovakian, Serbian and sometimes Czech. But I can’t respond in them. And of course I understand Portuguese, a lot of French, Italian, and Romanian cuz Romanian was taught to me as a child but I forgot 90% of it. But I struggle learning languages that are so similar cuz I struggle memorizing the differences in the other language. It’s not as easy or quick as I thought it would be. I understand a lot of French and Italian for example, from tons of listening and can have A1 minimal convos with errors but I can’t seem to make these differences stick even though I recognize it when I hear it. My memory has gotten really bad since recovering from Covid 3 years ago and many people report having their memory and concentration affected. Any tips?
@Leo-bf4lq3 ай бұрын
as someone who learned four romance languages, make sure you apply them to different things! it also helps learning them separate from each other. use imagery, music, personas. diving in and learning each of their cultures also helps. practice practice practice. but thats my take on it.
@FransceneJK983 ай бұрын
@@Leo-bf4lq learning separate is definitely important but I’m already in the middle of half learning French and Italian. Even though I’m actively focusing on Italian. At least French is distance in spelling and pronunciation. And yes. Learning their cultures separately and attaching their language differences to each is important. Thanks. Is that how you learned 4 Romance languages? What’s your native language?

@Leo-bf4lq3 ай бұрын
@@FransceneJK98 it was definitely a big help on learning the 4 languages. my native language is english, and regarding what you said about italian and french, that’s perfectly fine! as long as you stay away from mixing the two (building solid foundations, application, etc) then you’ll do great. practicing one language in the morning and the other in the afternoon also helps me to learn 2 languages simultaneously. and yes, italian and french have very distinct characteristics and cultures that greatly help differentiate the two.

I would argue that at least for English reckoning, proficiency in 4+ languages would qualify someone to be a "polyglot". English has words for 2 and 3 languages (bilingual and trilingual), but nothing more than that. Polyglottism would logically follow that number.

i tried this it was great for the bigger languages but when i got in languages like Norwegian Catalan and Galician i noticed that i was not enjoying studying it because there isn't a lot of media in these languages that i like. i tried to force myself to watch and read things that are popular but don't appeal to me like football soap operas and so on it feels like these countries are 20 years behind when it comes to media despite being quite rich countries if i look for Norwegian videos on youtube i just get tv news and some old jokes from 2006 they also have a lot of the cultural aspects i dislike about my own culture. its a mixed thing sometimes its nice that they are relatable but it can also be boring (i am a native Dutch speaker from Belgium) . i like smaller languages from central/eastern Europe like Latvian or Slovak because they just seem to make more things that appeal to me just for the sake of patriotism or because they are monolingual. it feels like they got a bigger population .and these languages are harder than the west European languages but not very hard. i am trying to learn some Asian and African languages too i think i made a lot of progress in Japanese because while its hard it is just very entertaining Japanese people make things most countries don't even the bigger ones. but with more rare languages from Asia like Hmong i made almost no progress because there is not a lot of media .when i try to speak Norwegian i usually end up speaking Swedish because i use Swedish way more .or with Catalan i use a lot of Spanish on accident despite me understanding what they are saying but i don't have this issue with Portuguese were i rarely mix them up because i just know more about these languages .
