I had a '99 Buick Regal GS, all black, not two-tone. Grey leather interior. Gorgeous car! Supercharged 3800. I never raced it, but it had excellent acceleration from stop lights. My strongest memory of the car is how beautifully it rode and how quiet and comfortable it was on long trips. You could take it on a seven-hour journey and arrive ready to drive another seven easily.

I have a 2005 Tony Stewart Monte Carlo SS. Nice car. Just wished g.m didn't cheap out on the interior. And the worst thing in the interior has to be the steering wheel. When paint comes off the buttons and light shining through them.

The 2001 Buick GNX concept car was sold at Barrett auctions a long time ago. It’s also worth noting there’s videos of Grand Prix gtp’s doing 0-60 in 5.6 seconds with the 260 hp 3.8 series 3 with whatever the series 3 supercharger was. So around 5 second 0-60 300 hp is very possible.

Traditionally Buick styling had ort holes that represented the number of cylinders the cars engines had installed. Six-cylinder cars got port holes in sets of three and eight cylinders got sets of four holes. This GNX concept having triple exhaust as well as triple port holes in the hood was no doubt a nod to this traditional Buick styling cue. Cool concept car in my opinion as it isn't far off of many of the Gm performance FWD cars in the era.
@ScrotieJohnson
@ScrotieJohnson Ай бұрын
not always the port holes mostly were mainly to show the extra length on the roadmasters and centuries upper tier models or long wheel base cars got 8 port holes as in 1953 buick quit using 6s until 1961. basically 6 meant a main line buick, 8 meant higher trim/ bigger buick not engine cylinders exclusively.
@playanddisplay3636
@playanddisplay3636 Ай бұрын
@@ScrotieJohnson True, however in this cars case I think we can agree that it was for the supercharged V-6, as this would have been the top trim line for this car, not the longest wheelbase for Buick granted.

One of my dream cars would be the last gen Silver Arrow Riviera with some upgrades, such as: the full stage 3 GSX performance package. I love how the Delco stereos look in the riviera so id keep that and just get those Blue Tooth "tapes" for phone calls and GPS. Then add 18 or 18 inch wheel tire combo, Full dark walnut wood dash kit for the interior, and somehow drop the HUD from a grand Prix GTP into the riviera. The GSX is great but a moddestly modded last gen silver arrow with the stage 3 GSX upgrade would be amazing.

The 3800 is truly a solid engine. Especially the supercharged one, I truly wish that GM still made it. They're practically near goddam bulletproof and probably the only good American made V6 ever made, these V6's can last upwards of 300k miles with very little issues. I wish they still had a variant of it, maybe updated with dohc and vvt- that would be a beast of an engine. GM kept the 5300 why couldn't they keep the beloved 3800.

Friend’s dad had bought a 2003 GSX (he had the First gen GSX muscle car after high school and had 2 GNs, his 86 getting stolen, and still had the ‘87 GN) and they fucking screwed for a Buick FWD or any FWD sedan. 300 Hp may not seem like a lot, today, but then along with the 320+ lbs/ft, was a big deal. The only performance-sapping issue, was the insanely tall geared 4 spd auto. It did have the limited slip, but good god- it could go from 50 to 100 in only second gear. He DID take it to a “run what ya brung” at the drags and on a hot, humid evening- managed a low 14 second pass. A better, even slightly-shorter-geared transmission and he probably could’ve tagged a high 13.

Bland but extremely reliable. With the 3800 supercharged in the GS, you would think the torque stear would be bad, but in my experience it wasn't. GM has done good work minimizing that. As far as FWD, I love it. I was raised on FWD and thats what im used to. I wouldnt have a RWD car because of the traction issue. Just my (albeit unusual) preference. Of course the most preferred for me would be AWD. All the way for sure. Great cars, special in a way a crossover could never be.

For about a year and in that time I found that though the supercharged engine was exhilarating, it sucked gas like no tomorrow once you tapped into the supercharger and the supercharger is not always online the engine is very underpowered until you press the pedal far enough to "turn on". the supercharger and I found that annoying in daily driving as I don't want to always drive at 9/10ths to enjoy the power that the engine can deliver ...so all the engines power always felt like an on-off switch (which was admittedly purposely engineered into it by GM for fuel economy)and I found that the better motor all around was really the naturally aspirated version for daily use and enjoyability

Excellent vid! A friend, who's maybe 100lbs soaking wet, got a GNX for graduation. Neither her nor her parents knew what they'd gotten her!!! She drove it like an economy car. This sounds like the same engine that was in Pontiac's 300 GPX concept that was drop dead. What's really heartbreaking is that Buick was looking to return to RWD in the 80s and converted a Regal coupe, sedan, and Reatta into RWD GN series to show how easy it could be done. They had both super or turbo charged 3.8s. Of course, GM said no. 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬

I actually like the concept and would drive it although I agree, the standard dual exhaust is better looking than the three odd ball center pipes.

There was another GNX concept built on a Holden platform that was rwd and powered by a twin turbo Cadillac motor. Maybe around 2008 ish. It was the same platform the later GTO was, very similar if I recall correctly. Do would be around when those were in production.

What a horrific time for mid grade cars. At least we still had the F-bodies back then. Meanwhile in Australia they were making awesome front engine rear drive sedans and wagons still. Now sadly those are gone too.
