Greenhorn builds a tent frame

I am making this up as I go along. I have zero carpentry and construction skills, but that's not stopping me from trying to build my little tent paradise in the woods. Today I figure out how to build rafters.
---
Where do I live?
Northwest Territories, Canada.
How much experience do I have?
That depends. I am pretty good at starting a fire these days and gathering wood. But I don't really have true bushcraft skills and definitely no carpentry or construction skills or training. I could probably make a shelter if I had to, but that would just come from all the KZbin training (watching) over the years.
What gear do I use?
Canon 80D camera
Rode videomicro
Sigma Art 18-35
Canon 1.8 50mm stm
Canon 18-55mm stm
Canon 10-18mm stm
A cheap 15 yr old tripod
I do not live at the tent. I just visit whenever I can.

I'm giving you a solid A for the hard work and effort. Please consider reinforcing those joyce's. Snow is heavy and just a couple of screws may not be enough. I hate to see you show up to camp and have the roof collapsed and the tent ripped. But for a zero carpentry skills job well done my friend.

Nice frame that is the way to do it, in a tent with a wooden frame. I would not want to be in a tent with a metal frame during a thunder storm. You did good for not having any carpentry skills. I'm not sure you can say that anymore!

Great Job, after 45 years in the trade I still don't get the speed square.. lol I much prefer a framing square but that is what I am use to. A little head scratching got you through it . A couple of angle braces will go a long way to stiffen up your frame and I would use some plywood for your gusset plates instead of lumber to prevent them from splitting. Nothing harder to work with than frozen lumber. A fun project for sure, we don't have the ability to lease land here in Nova Scotia as we could at one time. Enjoy Steve

Jay, I agree with Steve. Where ever you can, some diagonal bracing will go a long way to increase rigidity. Also a piece of dimensional lumber across the front (top plate) to help tie everything in. At the moment, I'm concerned that once the canvas is over top it will act like a sail to any wind. Could be an issue for the longevity of the structure. You've put a lot of great work in to it so far. A little bit more to make sure you'll be able to enjoy it for years to come.

As it sits right now with that open front wall, downward force from snow is going to force the roof down, which is going to push out both side walls. Agreed with above, reinforce with plywood, but also consider something that will combat lateral forces on side walls, like corner braces or even steel cable and turnbuckles between the two sidewalls. Awesome video though, and I'm considering building a similar frame for my wall tent. Awesome job in a far more remote area than I'll be working in.

Good job of figuring everything out! I watch another channel where a guy has a tent cabin in northern Minnesota. After setting up the tent, he built a wooden shelter/roof over the entire thing to keep snow off the tent, and even has a covered porch. It looks like a cabin inside and out! The interior is beautiful. I know you will have fun finishing out your project. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! BTW, the other channel is Northern Seclusion.

If you want to help keep your walls from bowing out from snow load, i would buy some turnbuckles and steel cable and hold the walls together. You will need some eye bolts as well. Then your open end will have more strength.

Try predrilling holes for your screws. This will prevent splitting. Also you need to install at least a couple of 2X4's from wall to wall along side the middle rafters to keep the walls from pushing out from snow load.

I’m building a 10x12 wood frame for my tent. Using a 2x8 ridge beam and rafters 2” oc. Platform is made from 2x10. Sides are 6’ high and 2x4. The ridge support will be 6x6 on both ends and be in middle of door but no worries about room getting in on both sides. I’m building in back yard and fit testing this weekend. I don’t want to be on my land which is water access only and have to make changes. If all goes well I’ll be putting up a 16’x24’ with 24’ ridge beam made from large maple tree and cut using chainsaw guide later this year.

Nothing much more to do then do it! And we are all allowed to make as many mistakes as is needed to come to that point you had set your mind to and decided.. I just had to do it! Rookie mistakes don't exist in my eyes, just as dumb questions.. they're needed because otherwise we will never come wherever we WANT to go 😊 My compliments and respect for setting your teeth in it and look at what you achieved! Fantastic! I am truly So happy for you because it all comes closer and closer! Make pictures of how it is because if you take it down, what always goes a heck of a lot faster, you will not forget how to put it up next time. But first you are going to enjoy from it 😊 I had to giggle at the miscalculation, the ones that never ever made a mistake like this when they were learning in our time without computers and all of that and we walked over the building floor with litteraly a calculator.. and you had to wreck the brain some, well, I hand it to you! Truly a moment to be proud of 👌😎 You have that foundation! With house building they now hang up the flag and take something to drink 😁 I hope you felt that cheerful too 😎👌😁 (And I guess I better explain that I am a girl raised up in a family of building and hated mathematics to the max! Even had special lessons for it next to school and I never got it.. until I became to work as a Electrician and wanted my papers, both theoretical and practical better then my brother... and I successfully ended up better schooled then my brother, had work sooner than him and a steady job with a year contract too, while he was the joker at schools and got kicked out of a few of them.. he is 5 years older then me.. But that's why I react this way 😶😊 just some technical background. ) Can't wait to see the next time, plus it keeps my mind off of all the misery.. scared because it is so close by.. Be safe and take care everybody...

You are sure a hard worker - especially in the cold. My only comment about your build is the front. It seems like tying the front corners together with a header from side wall to side wall, or a header and short walls on either side of the front opening, would probably make the frame much more stable.
