I'll warn anyone that exposure to allergens most often makes allergies worse, not better! The best thing to do is go hang out with individual cats for like a half hour, go home, and see how you feel the next couple hours. I was the adoption counselor for a rescue, and this is something we did often for folks with allergy concerns, for both cats and dogs. We'd have families looking for a pet for over a year, and come in every couple weeks to meet a new animal, and sometimes, after months of trying, we'd end up sending them home with a pit bull (a breed to which folks with allergies are often VERY sensitive) who, for whatever reason, didn't trigger someone's allergies. I also usually recommend that folks with allergies look only at adult animals, as the structure and components of an animal's skin can change during puberty, and you might not be allergic to little Cream Cheese Icebox , Esq., the cat, when you adopt him at 12 weeks old, but suddenly Cream Cheese Icebox, Esq. (who you remaned Marvin because when Cream Cheese Icebox, Esq. arrived at the shelter, the staff were just having *too* boring a day) is 6 months old and your nose starts running if you so much as look at a picture of him.

If you want to adopt a specific kind of cat, you could look for rescue societies for that specific breed in your area. It'll be difficult though, breed culture around cats isn't the same as it is around dogs.
@heatherwild2627
@heatherwild2627 3 жыл бұрын
what do you mean?
@skittykay
@skittykay 3 жыл бұрын
@@heatherwild2627 there's a couple of factors, I'd say starting with; the history of breeding cats and dogs is very different. Selectively breeding dogs goes back tens of thousands of years, while most recognized cat breeds were only starting to be bred less than 100 years ago. Another factor (and someone what related to the last) is there's just way more stray and feral cats in the world than there are dogs, and they breed faster and more often, so even if there was a purebred cat that was breeding in the wild, the chance of one of their offspring making its way back into the shelter system and still having a recognizable breed is so, so low. That's a reason why people Nick was talking to had no idea about the breed, because its not an easy thing to discern from a stray cat like it might be for a lot of dogs.

omg if you get a cat research cat psychology and body language i learnt so much, my cat used to hate me and he loves me now. the main things i've learnt are: - cats greet each other by booping noses, so slowly bring your relaxed knuckle toward their nose (make sure you don't put your hand in front of their eyes) and it'll boop your knuckle, if it moves away from your knuckle you're either being too fast or it's uncomfortable. -the best place to pet it is in between it's "eyebrows" -when it lays on it's back and exposes it's tummy it is *not* an invitation to rub it's tummy, from that position the cat can easily grab on to you with it's arms and legs and bite you. most cats that i have met do not like tummy rubs but it varies from cat to cat. -if a cat is purring it may feel ill or tired, if it comes up to you and purrs it has probably noticed that you are upset or tired and is "recharging" with you

hey nick, dont be afraid to reach out to a cattery (cat breeder)! rescue cats are fantastic but the VAST majority of them have no specific breed lineage, unless they were purposely bred, so it is extremely hard to predict how your allergies will react to them. supporting ethical breeders (who work to better the breed, do extensive health testing, etc) is great for the cat population and you would be able to speak to someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the cats they produce so you would know exactly what you're getting. reputable breeders don't contribute to the population of cats in shelters because they are always willing to take their cats back if something happens and they can no longer stay with their owners!

@@greenisnotnick I concur, you're not going to be able to adopt a high quality cat most likely, it's pretty rare to find those cats since they're so high demand. Just spend a little time online looking into online breeders, look for a breeder that has 10 females or less in my opinion, they have more time to handle the kitten when young and less likely to be some sketchy mill, and trust your instincts!

Okay I have got some tips for your cat adoption struggles... 1. Expensive breeds like the ones you listed don't normally end up in shelter. But in the instances when they do, the shelter will likely not advertise it because it would attract people who just want the cat for status or as a prop and not as a real pet. They tend to do those adoptions behind the scenes with good pet owners who have adopted from them in the past. 2. Just adopt ANY cat you click with. Your allergies are more than likely to fade over time as your immune system gets used to the dander. For most people it's a couple weeks. I'm allergic to all cats but my own because I live with him. Eventually you spend enough time with them and you'll be fine. Obviously there are exceptions to this but I have never seen someone who hasn't lost or at least decreased their symptoms of allergies a few weeks after adoption My source is that I have volunteered at my local animal shelter for a few years. I am proud of the work we do and the selectiveness we take in picking owners for our shelter babies.

Mine was doing well but he had come from a pregnant female and she passed away during birth shortly after the woman took her in, so she hand reared all her kittens.

For cats - purebred cats are quite rare (especially when compared to purebred dogs) and it's very unlikely to find them in rescues as breeders tend to be very diligent about choosing potential buyers. It may come down to contacting a couple rescues and asking to be notified if they get any of the breeds you want. However, your best shot to get a purebred cat is to go to a breeder or find a re-home - like a retired queen or retired show cat etc. Good luck!

Every now and again there's some that get put up for adoption on that pet finder site pretty much everywhere. You see a lot of them being cross bred and I have heard that it can work though allergies might be wild for a month or two. Even with a purebred allergies might take a week or two to calm down like it did with my roomie. You just kinda got to feel it out sometimes. Also putting a hepa filter on a box fan can really help all allergies across the board that might be in your house and they also sell these wipes you can use on your cat every few days that can reduce the allergens they shed via saliva and dander.

If you're looking to adopt, it's going to be hard to know for certain if it's purebred. Technically the only way to know is if there is documentation from the breeder certifying it as a purebred and you're not really going to be able to find one of those in a shelter. My cat is a partial siamese which can be one of the easier breeds to identify depending on if you know what you're looking for (there are tuxedo siamese cats so it's not always super clear). Most people aren't allergic to her. Some have gotten a reaction. It's going to depend on person to person even if you do find a cat that produces little fel d1 protein. I had to drive about two hours south of Chicago to pick her up so you might need to broaden your search area. It'll be easier to look for cats that have really identifiable features. It'll be hard to tell a Siberian or Russian blue from other cats that just look like them. I also wouldn't recommend a Bengal. There's probably close to 0% chance you'll find one in a shelter and I don't find them to be particularly ethical. It's also important to keep in mind that a purebred cat is going to have more predisposition to health problems.

Hey, Nick. I live about 20 minutes from Chicago in northwest Indiana and I worked at my local humane society for several years until recently. I’d recommend looking for independent rescues/foster networks (there are a ton in the city but I don’t know any by name), because they tend to have more information about the cats in their care and more time to spend working with potential adopters. Most of those rescues are run by volunteers, and they’re usually easiest to reach on social media (mainly Facebook/Instagram). I’ve spoken to plenty of people in your situation before and unfortunately it’s very expensive to DNA test cats/dogs in order to determine their breed, and shelters just can’t afford to do that. Pretty much any shelter that does specify an animal’s breed is only guessing based on physical characteristics, which can be really unreliable anyway. Based on my experience, you’ll only really know if a cat will irritate your allergies after meeting it in person.

To be clear, shelters are great places to adopt from and they need adopters desperately, I just know how difficult it can be for them to accommodate people with more specific needs because their staff are usually stretched so thin and they have larger animal populations.

that person that you contacted was right about not wanting to adopt out single kittens, though. Having just one kitten instead of two leaves them without a companion to play with or to keep them company while you are busy or out of the apartment. it’s better for their health (and you as the owner because they’ll be less destructive as a pair than alone) to get two kittens if you’re going the kitten route!

Consider getting the breed you're looking for from a reputable breeder. Their animals don't enter the shelter system so you aren't contributing, their cats will have extensive health testing done that you won't get in a shelter cat or a poorly bred purebred, and you get a lifetime of support from the breeder. Their fur has really low levels of Fel d1, the only thing is if you have really bad allergies and you wanna brush or cuddle with them they do shed a LOT so just be prepared to clean up their tumbleweeds of fur they'll accumulate over the course of a few weeks.

Speaking from experience, the cat thing kind of depends on the severity of your allergies. There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic cat, just ones that supposedly give off lower levels of allergens than others. So if the allergy is mild, looking for a specific breed may be enough to tolerate sharing a space with a cat long-term, but an allergist would definitely recommend that you don't let the cat into the room you sleep in and try to eliminate or minimize the amount of carpeting you have in the house. For me, I can't imagine any breed that I could have tolerated being around for more than a few hours without having a very bad reaction, so I chose the immunotherapy route, if only to make visiting my friends who have cats easier. (Was also very allergic to dogs so even more incentive.) It's a long process and definitely something you wanna have health insurance cover part of, but I'd imagine it would make the experience of owning and caring for a cat much more enjoyable!

There are also a number of people commenting that they managed to grow out of animal allergies through long-term exposure in their houses. And while that's all good and well for those people, that's kind of an anecdotal/chance-based experience. I wouldn't recommend that to someone without knowing their allergy history/severity, because if it backfires, it could make the allergies worse and shuffle the cat into another home unnecessarily. A number of people in my life have tried to recommend that methodology to me, or tried to convince me that I would be fine around their pet because so-and-so with bad allergies was also fine around it. And well...I wasn't! 😬

hey Nick, you've probably been told this a few times but I'd look into allergy shots for cats! idk how much they would cost in the US or if they're covered but hopefully they aren't that bad. I know that they don't work for everyone though so its kind of a guessing game :/ also if by some miracle you end up with a Bengal cat, I pray to whatever God exists out there for you lmao

Getting a cat - try following animal shelters in your area on social media or regularly checking their websites with lists of adoptees. The harder to find breeds go quickly, so if they show up you gotta know and then jump on it. REALLY appreciate that you are attempting to adopt and not shop!! ❤️❤️❤️ I'm also allergic, but still foster anyway :) We just got some Cornish Rexs (low allergenic breed) and they went in less than a week. Good luck!!!

Just fyi nick bengal cats are really a handful! They are breeding more directly with a wild cat(lynx)…and it is very easy for them to be mistreated because they need special care because they’re so roudy. Bengals require outdoor time, excessive playing, special diets, and lots more litter box training! But they are beautiful cats 😌😌😌😌 just a fair warning
@gypsylee333
@gypsylee333 3 жыл бұрын
No. Bengals are made with a domestic cat and the wild cat is called an Asian Leopard Cat, not a Lynx. Mine does not need outdoor training or special diets really, just a high protein high calorie dry kibble is fine. They are rowdy for sure, and mine has done best when the household was busier, more people, more pets, more action. They're highly intelligent and need that extra interaction and play time to tire them out. I'm assuming Nick is home most of the time so maybe he can give that. Oh and I never needed to litter train him he did it on his own since I got him so either the breeder trained him or he did it on his own, but he was great on that.

I had severe allergies as a kid (mostly helped by allergy shots). Back then there weren’t shots for animals, but our dog didn’t bother me, and I eventually built my tolerance to my horse and cat. Allergies are weird, bc decades later I have severe reactions to horses and cats and mild reactions to certain dog breeds. So severe I get asthma (which I never had as a kid). I’ve heard the Xolo, the Mexican hairless dog is great for allergies, and they are amazing looking! The only cat that doesn’t bother me is Russian blue.

@megapiglatin2574

I'm guessing it's a combination of kittens tending to do better with other kittens of a similar age (they can entertain each other and teach each other important life skills like bite/claw inhibition, etc.,) AND many shelters being practically overrun with kittens during the warmer months trying to get as many cats adopted out as possible.
@K9Kungfu

Also supporting ethical breeders is 1000% OKAY. the "Adopt don't shop" was started by PETA. It's people that backyard breed these kittens (who it sounds like you're talking too) you SHOULD not be talking too. It's worth the money to get a health tested and wed bred kitty.

As an animal shelter volunteer, my motto is adopt or shop ethically. However you'd be surprised how many established breeders aren't as ethical as they should be. Be wary of purebread, breeders often resort to incest. Do your thorough research on the breeder and you're good
@K9Kungfu
@K9Kungfu 3 жыл бұрын
@@jess-mx this is why I said ethical. Nick is presumably looking for a hypoallergenic cat which he will have great difficulty looking for. Ethical breeders take their animals back as opposed to let them go to shelter in the first place. I got my last dog from a shelter and she died at age 5 due to health reasons. I don't regret it, but I'm not getting an animal whose health history I don't have because they come from unknown lineage. Also all purebred animals had to have some form of line breeding as some point. Again, notice how I said "health tested and well bred." Further more, a lot of rescues and shelters are extremely unethical but I don't think most people are ready for that conversation. Retail rescue.

I fully support you on your journey to find a cat friend and the vast majority of these comments. I will also say, although I don't know your background with cats, please make sure you do plenty of research into not only the physical needs, but also the behavioral needs of your cat--especially purebreeds like the bengal. Some may be chill housecats--other have a bit more of those wild genes in them and may require more extensive prepping and catification. I, as a random internet stranger and avid cat lover, want to make sure both you and your kitty live a happy, peaceful life together! I'm also seconding the breed-specific rescues suggestion. I'll send a DM about what I found specifically.
