There's this split now where you have snooty Waitrose shoppers like Smith berating Greggs and all who go there, and then daft people who rave about it to non-Brits making out it's amazing. In reality, Greggs is like Wetherspoons. It's cheap and not great quality, but no matter where you are in the country, you know there's probably one nearby and it's gonna be the exact same as your local. It's not amazing, it's not the worst, it's an acceptable level of mediocrity that you are already braced to expect.

What I dislike about Greggs is that it used to be that each town, or maybe small region, had its own bakery or bakery chain (or maybe more than one) that did bread and sandwiches and pastries similar to Greggs. Greggs used to be one of these... And then they expanded massively, putting many of those more local (standard, cheap, not fancy) bakeries out of business, and then they stopped being a bakery!! You cannot go into Greggs and buy a loaf of bread and haven't been able to for years. Then they've successfully managed to brand themselves in such a way as to redirect all the goodwill that people have for classic British bakeries like these and convert that into goodwill for their brand specifically. You'd forgive someone for thinking that Greggs invented the sausage roll the way people go on about it. Where I live there's FOURTEEN Greggs locations within a 15 minute walk of each other. That's crazy! What if even half of those were some other bakery. Actually we only have like 2 fancy bakeries in that same area, and one of them only just opened. So I don't mind an individual Greggs, but I agree it's a scourge!
@Relyx5 ай бұрын
Firkins was our local chain, but to be honest they were pretty much the same as Greggs when it came to savoury stuff. Their cakes, turnovers and the like were definitely better though
