I started DCS multi-player when I was like 14. Technically it was still called Lock-On back then, but the F-15 hasn't really changed. Yeah I got rocked a bunch, but it was a lot of fun. If you watch this channel, there are probably going to be a lot of fools online who know less than you. Heck, even our man Greg misidentifies a MiG-29 as a Su-27 at the start of this video, lol.
@sethbromley71864 күн бұрын
Fighting a P-47 goes against what their experience and instinct is telling them. If they take hits or see tracers, and they don't know it's coming from a P-47, the hard break turn is usually the correct move -- if you go vertical against another fast jet at gun range, he just follows you and shreds you. That F-86 guy though, no excuse. Should have boomed and zoomed, instead reversed right into Greg's guns. RIP.

Best thing about MP is you end up meeting like minded people and having a group to fly with. I found this easier on WW2 servers.
@AdmiralQuality4 күн бұрын
I never understand that. It's not like anybody knows who you are or you carry a career record around that has any meaning. DCS isn't a game, it's a simulator. (Sometimes Greg doesn't seem to understand that and describes features of a particular server as if they're a built-in part of a game. DCS is a sandbox simulator, and it's up to the community to make games *in* it. For example, the shoot-down messages he mentions don't have to be there - entirely up to the server owner/Mission designer. I don't care much for the chat display either but it is a good idea to monitor it. You can hide it with Tab and only a mail icon will appear letting you know there's new messages you haven't read yet. I hate any fake overlays but I usually leave that one up and scan the messages I've missed when I occasionally get a chance, unless the team is solidly using voice comms. It's not just server messages in there but player chat as well. What's dumb and unnecessary though is you can't open the chat with Tab unless the mail icon is also activated. LCtrl+Y if I remember correctly. All LCtrl+Y *should* do is enable/disable display of the "email" icon. But why would I want a hotkey to lock out use of another hotkey?) And as for getting shot down, I know I provided some other player with the satisfaction of downing a human opponent. Never bothers me, though I do *try* to succeed, not succeeding doesn't ruin my night or anything. And if you get frustrated in one server, switch to another and do something totally different with a totally different bunch. Change your login name! Nobody knows or cares who you are! (Well, except me. I get banned from servers by fanboy owners due to my customer advocacy role.)

Greg, you are absolutely correct that the Mirage is a blast to fly. The instantaneous turn rate is ABSURD on that thing. My favorite thing in the world is get get the Mirage into a BVR fight with Tomcats. I once notched a 3-ship of Tomcats all the way to the merge and wiped out the whole formation from their six while they were still wondering where I went. The Mirage is also completely untouchable at altitude. There's a video on my channel from Tacview of me intercepting the enemy AWACS and then simply out-running the entire enemy team as they try to chase me in Eagles and Hornets. The Mirage can get to the Concorde flight profile (M2.0 Angels 60) with missiles onboard and sustain it for almost the entire width of most DCS theater maps. With that much energy, you really cannot be intercepted unless a Tomcat plays his cards exactly right with an AIM-54. In an 80s era server without fox-3s, the Mirage becomes a God, able to manipulate the fabric of space-time at will.

My friend was involved with importing MIG23's from an ex Com Bloc country, like Bulgaria, Romania or one of those places, you could tell they were running out of money, they had wings or the tail from one installed on another as the paint was faded to different levels and some markings didn't jive with the rest on a few of them, it was very obvious that they were taking parts off the least desirable ones to keep the best examples flying, some had no instruments in the panels from them being cannibalized for use in others, only one had an engine that was still within its service life in the batch they got in when I went to visit him. He'd actually gone over there once to meet with people, he said their airbase looked deserted, the lawns around the buildings obviously hadn't been mowed all summer and looked like a field, the hallways through the buildings looked like they hadn't been mopped and waxed since Brezhnev was the party chairman, they obviously had very little money and had to scrimp and save, including selling the MIG23's to get the MIG29's they were replacing them with. And you just know in a situation like that they don't have the money for fuel and maintenance to afford any kind of training time, once they get checked out in something their once a month 2 hour flight they get to take is just taking off and landing basically, any real maneuvers and the maintenance would go beyond budget, you just know they wouldn't last long in combat from not having any serious stick time.

@kennethwilson11404 күн бұрын
What prop driven fighters lack in speed and power, they excel in maneuverability in a turning fight against jet fighters... Jet against jet you have a fair chance (depending on the match up) in a turning fight but a jet will usually not be able to turn with a prop driven plane as prop driven fighters can fly slower than the stall speed of the jet, you have to use the jet's ability to accelerate and either go vertical or extend out horizontally and come back in a slashing pass. Dog-fighting is not just about being a better pilot but also knowing the strengths of the enemies equipment and exploiting their weaknesses to your advantage. Most aces got the majority of their kills by catching the "other guy" napping on the job (caught by surprise).

Aircraft have to play to their strengths. Getting in any kind of a turning match with a slow prop job is just stupid. A jet aircraft just needs to dive on it's prey, fire, climb and repeat if needed. The prop job can't match the climb rate of a "Zoom and Boom" attack and certainly can't speed away or hide in a cloud, as the radar will find them. A WW2 fighter would have zero chance of survival. Fun to watch, but bad tactics leads to bad results.

I thought I talked about that, but maybe not in all the chaos. There is no choice here you start with what the server gives you, which in all the planes is about 20mins of fuel at combat power. The server is so violent that the odds of living long enough to use up that much fuel are pretty close to zero.

Have you tried lowering your gear before ditching on the airfield? Maybe landing wheels down without exploding will let you refuel and rearm.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobilesКүн бұрын
You can refuel or rearm either way, but if you landed gear up you will also have to repair.

does DCS have the P40? The Warhawk is and will always be my all time favorite piston driven aircraft. Not saying it the best. Just my favorite.
@manny2ndamendment2464 күн бұрын
Greg, can you design a piston engined airplane that can exceed mach 1?
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles4 күн бұрын
Do you mean piston engine, or propeller driven? Those are two different things, and highly relevant.
@manny2ndamendment2464 күн бұрын
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles both. Piston engine and propeller driven. I saw a concept aircraft called the intrepid air racer which could go 590mph in theory and it's basically just a super prop.
@matthewl65654 күн бұрын
I'd be interested in a video on that (maybe keep it broader to propeller driven)
@rbasomb4 күн бұрын
Now im curious of which is the aircraft that is piston powered but not propeller driven.
@clarkenoble4 күн бұрын
@rbasomb He is probably referring mostly to aircraft that are propeller driven, but NOT piston powered. Turboprops are propeller driven but NOT piston powered. Check out the Tu-95 bomber which is quite fast for a propeller driven aircraft. However, to answer your question, yes, there was a piston powered aircraft that did NOT use a propeller. The Caproni Campini N.1, was a pre-WWII experimental aircraft designed to explore jet turbine concepts. It used a piston engine to drive the compressor to provide thrust. Have a great day!

If both sides can fly whatever planes they want how do you even keep track in the air who's on which side? I can't seem to make out paint jobs until you basically fly past the other plane, let alone when you're far away and only just closing in.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles3 күн бұрын
Great question. There are little blue and red "carrots" over each plane, which are easy to see online but somehow they don't seem to show up after the video is put up on youtube. I don't know why not.

@Greg- Shouldn’t Negative G’s produce Red-Outs instead of Blackouts???

Yes. I didn't feel the need to pick on DCS on that issue too much. It's overall and amazing sim and I think people tend to focus too much on the small potatoes stuff.

do you happen to be colorblind? you get a visual grey effect before passing out, can you not let off on the stick at that point?
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobilesКүн бұрын
You can, but it's not gradual, it goes from there to full blacked out. In reality it closes in on you at a pretty linear rate. In DCS as soon as it starts to go grey, you pull any more and it goes black instantly, and in negative G, you get no warning, just black out.
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobilesКүн бұрын
As an example, IL2 really does a good job with this. It fades to black as the G load increases so you can modulate it closer to the limit as you can in reality.

The teams are color coded with little icons above the planes. For some reason it doesn't show up when put on youtube.

Server looks great. Which one is it?
@phantomraven50444 күн бұрын
Tbh, I think DCS should add a G-indicator like IL-2 does. It doesn’t necessarily have to show the number of G’s but maybe the more you pull the more the bar fills up or something.
@lawrencemeadonia75004 күн бұрын
Seems a bit intrusive to have a display G indicator. Funny enough, War Thunder's method of gradual screen coloration seems to work well at this. DCS is just too abruptly locking the pilot out.
@phantomraven50444 күн бұрын
@ you know, I have thought a bit more on it. I like the g-indicator alot. It is the only ui element I keep on my screen during il-2 but an indicator doesnt solve the problem of not being able to feel the g’s. Instead, I noticed while playing il-2 some more is that their pilot breathing is just INFINITELY superior to DCS! It by far makes the player notice just how hard the g’s are. In DCS (just got off playing pvp with the p-51) there is hardly any breathing at all. Only when u are approaching 8gs did I hear breathing. I think a better solution is for DCS to update their audio scape and make different strains of breathing for the pilot. We want it to not be repetitive af but some balance between none and alot should be struck. Maybe heavy nose breathing to mouth breathing to combat breathing etc etc.
@lawrencemeadonia75004 күн бұрын
@phantomraven5044 Yah, something audible might be the best compromise. Hopefully DCS does more to improve gameplay instead of just modeling physics and planes.

Maybe for G forces, a seat with a harness that tightens would be the thing. I am sure someone with an Arduino and some motors could do it, but you'd want to be very confident about your failsafe conditions should the DCS program crash when you are at high Gs. It would be easier to build than a tillting chair or something like that and be more haptically similar, if only slightly, than a butt kicker or something.
@wingracer16144 күн бұрын
Just for purposes of maximizing gameplay, not realism, all you need is some sort of indication. It could be a vibration, tone, or just some sort of warning graphic on the screen.
@wbertie26044 күн бұрын
@@wingracer1614 Yes, in terms of getting an indication, a butt kicker would be suffcient (you'd want it to be distinct from force feedback on the stick) but perhaps psychologically something different would be more immersive. Plus I was trying to inject a little humour into the discussion.

Why don’t they simulate g load with tunnel vision on the optics? That’s what tends to happen IRL, rather than just suddenly black out.

Modern Jets are like 25% Engine and 70% fuel tanks. Can’t imagine .50cals having any effect on a Jet unless you get a pilot snipe 🤔 Maybe shred an engine real good.
