So now you gotta help me. This is of course a more expensive option but I’m upgrading from an M1 Mac Mini because I realized I needed a laptop after all. Since I usually buy a machine that’ll last me long, and I’m editing video a lot, it would be a thing to do. But my editing is not more than 2-3 cameras 4K footage and no fancy effects, and I’m also editing photos in various apps (no Adobe products) where I noticed my M1 Mini (w.16GB memory) struggled frequently. So is the GPU that significantly better in the Max (at 14/32) compared to the Pro (14/20) for me? I'm also thinking about the longevity when all the apps and MacOS are getting their upgrades in the future. The Unified memory is also an issue here, I tend to use many apps at the same time when I go wild on my computer and 48GB on the Pro is more than 32GB on the Max option.... Puzzled....

No, you're not just getting a bump in GPU cores when going from the top Pro to the base Max. You're also getting a second media engine, literally cutting export times in half for supported video codecs
@VMYeahVN2 ай бұрын
Those supported codecs are only h.264, HEVC (h.265), ProRes, and ProRes Raw though. Most video editing pros are just as often, if not more often, working with proprietary Raw formats like RED camera R3D files, or raw Canon or Sony cinema camera files that are not supported by the media engine. The media engine has to brute force those (which is still helped by going from Pro to Max chip just not always linear double). So export times are not always cut in half across the board as there are lots of variables depending on what an editors specific workflow is and what cameras they are working with. Kinda wish more tech KZbinrs talked about that and tested it more in their videos. Hopefully some will once these new Macs are in everyone's hands.

Unfortunately, these are the highest available RAM sizes that Apple allows us to customize for these two processors even though they are designed to handle more RAM. I wouldn't even be able to get 48GB RAM with the top of line M4 Max (16 core CPU/40 core GPU). I would have to get 64GB RAM. What are you all thinking is the best approach here? Get more RAM size with the M4 Pro or get more GPU processing power with a smaller RAM size with the M4 Max? The base M4 Max RAM does have 1.5x the bandwidth speed, but still 12GB less in size, so I'm thinking the bandwidth speed here is negligible. So this brings me to do I want more GPU processing power or RAM. Thought? Apple should allow us to customize the way we see fit. We're already paying premium high-end prices (who knows what their margins are, btw), so provide us with the premium level of service to do what we want on customization.

@iPoriel2 ай бұрын
Videographer here also. Going on the 14cpu/20gpu (from an M1 PRO MBP). But this time, I will pay for extra RAM. 16GB was to light the last time for big project into premiere. Going for 48GB. So for me, I will go for the 14' M4 PRO (14/20) with 48GB of RAM + 1TO of storage. One week of thinking (max ? Not max ? More ram or not...). Finally think this is the good choice to go.
@ApolloDigitalCA2 ай бұрын
@ Interesting, thanks for sharing. I feel like for me, 48gb ram would be a bit overkill cuz I don’t NEED that much. I hope the base specs for the M4 Pro MBP are good enough for us. I usually edit in 4K with proxies and probably might dabble a bit with 8K

I’m wondering if the M4 Pro MacBook Pro base model with 48GB of RAM and 512gb SSD is enough to use Davinci Resolve 19 and play Resident Evil 4 Remake. What would you advise? think it will be almost too difficult to upgrade to a 1TB SSD for my budget. My last resort is the base M4 MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM with 1TB SSD. I hope the 512 SSD isn’t throttled. Thanks for any advice in advance.

@CamCornelius2 ай бұрын
1. I too despise the forced upgrades. 2. You neglected to mention the difference in memory bandwith that is especially important when using unified memory. If there is a bandwidtth bottleneck, the cpu and gpu performance does not matter...like a traffic jam where the powerful cpu and gpu are waiting to process the data, but with not enough lanes for the data to get there in time. The increased memory bandwidth on the max will all but eliminate those bottlenecks = delays.

Hi there, originally i went with the base m4 with 24 gb and 512. However The tb5, two Cpu and 6 gpu cores sold me. I chose the base m4 pro. Focus on upgrading the ram and get external storage as apple’s upgrade pricing is highway robbery. With tb5 we are seeing read and write speeds on par with the built in ssd’s on macs so I would honestly recommend spending the xtra and get the base m4 pro minimum as that tb5 will be crucial going forward in the future.

Hey, isn't there are difference in the number of video encoders between the M4 Pro and M4 Max as well? The M4 Max has two video encoder engines and two ProRes encoder/decoder engines while the M4 Pro has one of each. I think that Final Cut Pro will fly on the M4 Max. Can't wait for the reviews to surface...
@Novvvus2 ай бұрын
In that scenario, in real life, the only difference you’ll notice is that you might have one more cup of coffee while exporting video on M4 Pro vs M4 Max. That’s not worth $1000. M4 Max is built for completely different tasks than you’re suggesting
@christopher3d4752 ай бұрын
The thing that I find interesting is that comparing the new M4 chips to the latest crop of low-power CPUs from Intel, Intel just isn't keeping up. Compare the Core Ultra 9 288V to the M4, and especially the M4 Pro and it's a slaughterhouse.
@adamthurmond90922 ай бұрын
You also have to take into account the amount of external displays. M4 Pro in a MacBook only does two external (in a Mac Mini it’s 3 total). If you want to display out to more than two externals you need the M4 Max. The Max isn’t in my budget right now so I’m buying an M4 Pro Mac mini.

Again purely on performance and thermals, consider light gaming etc, Thanks in advance 🙂

You forgot something: cpu on max has an higher clock! Gpu has the DOUBLE of bandwith for the ram. It’s not only about the core count, it’s about speed. But I totally agree that MAX chips are only for professionals!
@rogermuggleton81272 ай бұрын
There are numerous videos about how various M4 Macs might perform. Some 'reviewers' have never seen or touched an M4 Mac, others might have one but cannot report anything themselves, so there are leaks which may or may not be genuine. But in a week or so there should be more dependable reporting once actual M4 Macs are delivered or NDAs expire. But we cannot resist looking now, even at the reports of M4 Ultra machines which may never exist. For me it's all academic, as my main use revolves around standard business applications, particularly spreadsheets. I'm unique amongst Mac owners as I don't edit video and wouldn't know how to. Thus the need for speed, storage space and memory are easily satisfied by the lowest spec M series Mac. Even so my main machine is a basic M1 Mac Studio, bought in March 2022 and I can't ever see any operational reason to upgrade it. But its fun to speculate, as long as I don't spend any money!
@Vger19772 ай бұрын
This is what I've been trying to tell people. All of these nonsensical m4 recommendations are based solely on the worst benchmark out there. Geekbench, which has NO relevance in real-world heavy workloads. They're about to find out that for those workloads, these chips will be similar to their mid-range PC counterparts in raw performance.

Can someone give ne a basic description of what a "binned" chip is and is it reliable?
@TheVoiceofReason4ya2 ай бұрын
A chip that has a few cores inactivated, it happens all the time in the wafers where the chips are mfg'ed, so they "Bin them" as a lower cost alternative. The chips are fine because all the other cores work the same as any other ship, there are just less of them that are usable.
@jessewest13332 ай бұрын
Perfect example is the ipad pro this year which has a binned m4 compared the the Macbook pro. Its a way to save money on chip yields as instead of throwing away good chips they make some adjustments and sell it at a “lower” price.
@jessewest13332 ай бұрын
Binning is (throwing away into the garbage bin the parts of a chip that dont meet the design standards by) disabling those parts on that said chip. So the rest of the chip is fine so they use it but and sell it at a lower cost. So just like a potatoe with a bad spot they remove the bad part and use it to make a wicked mashed potato.
