This was the best explanation of the Truma Combi system that I have seen. Even a tour of the Truma factory in Munich Germany, with commentary by Truma engineers, produced by the Fit RV, another RV channel on KZbin, did not cover it as well as you did. Kudos to you for a great and informative video. Cheers from Houston Texas!

As an IT guy, I learnt to turn ideas into reality by research, design, think, review, think, review, think, review and only then build. Yours is the only van build series that has clearly done that. The design/build it as you go approach may be valid, but leads to most people having a big list of things they wish they'd done differently. And the van becomes an ongoing reconstruction project.

Very nice presentation. I have been using my Truma in our RV since 2008 and still working as good as new. Good quality and great performance. Don’t have the option of electric heating of the water but yet but that is a spare part that I hope to install now that I am extending my roof solar from 100 watts to 1000 watts and a 3000 watt inverter.

That’s great to know you’ve had 9 years good service. I’m only planning to use the electric heating when on hook up as 900w or 1.8kW would kill my batteries in no time.

Greg, Thank you very much for putting all this very usefull info out. As a fellow engineer, I really like that you have thought trough everything yourself instead of copying from one video to the next. I see people doing things that makes me rethink all their information, but I also don't want to reinvent everything. I don't worry about that with your videos. I'm going to build next 6 months and then travel around Europe for atleast a year. Your videos are very helpfull. Thanks!

Thanks for the great video! I'd still go for diesel version if you plan for more than couple of days offgrid in cold weather. Combi 4 eats around 0.2Kg (0.4L) LPG per hour in a van like your Sprinter with 0-20 temperature gradient. This is roughly 10L LPG tank per day even without cooking and hot water. And Webasto dual top can be mounted outside and free additional 70L of living space.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
I will give you some exact usage data once we are on the road. Its all relative to how well the van is insulated as to how long the heater is running. Plus if we are cooking the heating will not be required either. We don't plan to spend too much time in the cold as winter camping is not very enjoyable. We will be on the Med by winter where its a bit more temperate.

Thank you for explaining how this works, excellent diagram and detail! Its a very efficient system. Outside and inside air are heated, and while air heater is on, it also heats up the water, very smart! The phone app and SIMM card remote control, propane tank accurate gauge is just genius! Truly remarkable German technology! Even named after US President Truman! When I build my van, I don't care how much this costs or how hard to get hold of one, I am getting this system and no other. Its a marvel of science and so beautifully created that it should belong in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Here are some other facts for viewers: 1. The only deal breaker for Americans may be that this runs on 240V so do they make a version for US market at 110V or will this run on a step down adapter from 240V to 110V? 2. I looked up cost on ebay and its not cheap at US $2700 approx. 3. Truma in Germany does not sell the Combi directly to consumers, only dealers. 4. You can look up specs and buy it from this Aussie dealer at AU $2400 + AU$32 shipping. www.mygenerator.com.au/truma-combi-4e-kit-gas-heater-hot-water-system.html 5. The weight of the Truma Combi 4e is 15.8 kg or 35 lbs 6. On the link above, you see all accessories, ductwork diagram, and specs. 7. Yes, you can run the water heater independently of the furnace heater. However, your hot water is also heated for free if you run the furnace. 8. Combi runs on a variety of fuels and power sources: gas, diesel, propane, AC, DC, and using hot engine while driving if you duct it that way. Refer to link above. Thank you Greg, for another great video and adding to the RV/Caravan knowledgebase!

@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Malcolm, you never know our paths could cross, sounds like you have a definite route planned. We are going to be much more winging it. For two cylinders you will need a level control device attached to each one, the level of each is displayed separately on the App. The device is magnetic so steel tank is preferable. Although they do a fixing bracket for non magnetic cylinders. www.truma.com/uk/en/products/truma-caravan-rv-gas-fittings/truma-levelcontrol.html

Great video again Greg! We were or maybe are going to go for the Truma 4e but I've seen a few videos and a lot of people claiming you only get 1m 50s of hot water in a shower. Thats ok for me, but if the wife is washing her hair that's not long enough. Are the water heaters window cleaners use not a better option in a camper for continuous hot water (providing you can supply it with a decent feed?)
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 2 жыл бұрын
The Truma heats up to 60°c so you have to mix that with same amount of cold to bring it down to shower temp. Best to use a head like ours with a trigger so not wasting water when lathering 🧼 then you have plenty to rinse. Obviously it’s not like at home but it’s definitely sufficient for us.

Hi Geoff, really appreciate your videos. They're so helpful. In your energy use audit video you say that you will not use the boiler unless you are on a hook up, due to the energy consumption. Does that make the boiler less important to your build or has your experience since being on the road make you just as glad that you included it?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 2 жыл бұрын
Geoff?? The boiler is dual fuel so when off grid it runs on LPG. We only use the electric elements when on hook up because they consume more power.

Greg, loved watchding your series on panel van conversion to an RV. I see you take great pride in your work. But I also absolutely love your detailed explanation of every thing you have built, installed or fitted, from how it works, how to install it, the handy hints on how to make it easier through to use of template's etc. While I don't know anything about the Truman, and have never used one, why you picked one makes absolute sense. But I have a question. Now the reason I raise this with you is I'm living in Australia, and it gets very hot here. Does this particular model of the Truman, have a way of venting the warm air outside the van during the summer months, when you only want to heat the water? Interested in your thoughts. I plan on doing a van conversion, soon myself downunder, and your videos certainly are at the top of my list of how to videos, when I get started. Wish you all the very best with your travels around Europe.

Hi Greg. Thanks for the wonderful videos. I have a thought. How do you think it would be to use one of the four outlets to blow hot air into several 30mm pipes in the floor as underfloor heating? For example, with XPS made for waterborne heat where the air comes out on the other side of the floor.

Hey Greg ! Thanks again for a superb video Could you explain why you went for a "e" model (230V/110V powering possibility) ? Just when being on-shore power, is it that more economical in the long run ? (being about 450€ more expensive, when bought, here in France) AND I guess we couldn't imagine it being powered by our van's battery ? (obvious I guess..)

Greg that was very comprehensive and well explained - (as usual) - thank you. I did not spot any form of filtration on the circulating air side of the system? Can you enlighten us on what factors you considered in making the choice between LPG and Diesel and what was the killer fact against diesel? Many thanks.Edit - just watched the linked manufacturers video - I am calming down now I thought I was going to see full on shower action there - ye gods!

Toni, remember the Truma runs on 240V and we have 110V in the US. I would first contact Truma in Germany to ask about this problem. You could also contact Winnebago that uses them in their RVs to ask how they resolve this issue. Once this big question is resolved, you can then hunt for a Combi. I contacted Truma but they do not sell the Combi direct to consumers, only the Truma Aquago hot water system. But the Combi is better. So you have to find out why Truma does not sell direct. Is it because it is a 240V and only the RV makers in US can wire it to step down to 240V safely with no liability, or is it because US RV makers want the monopoly and edge of having the Combi while you cannot buy it directly. I will crack it when I am ready. For now, see my comment on top with a link to an Aussie dealer and ask them how to get it for you. But don't forget the 240V issue.

@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, you would need to do that for showers in summer. We find for a bit of washing up it’s more economical to boil a kettle in summer as it’s less water to warm up. We generally use the hot water in the morning for washing as the heater may have been on in the night to keep the van warm and you get the hot water as a by product of the heating. This really does make it very economical to use.

I'm sure that's a great heater, but I'd still go with an Eberspächer (Espar) Hydronic unit and a small heat exchanger; that gets you hot water without a tank. You can hook up another heat exchange to the glycol and that one will generate hot air instead of hot water. Rixen in the US has a kit, albeit for 120 volts (for the electric heater that can be used instead of diesel when you have shore power.)
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, to heat water instantaneously via a heat exchanger at a flow rate sufficient to have a shower you would need a big heat source. Most combi boilers that do that in domestic properties are rated at 30kW or 100,000Btu Good luck with your build, let me know how it works out. Cheers

It is incredible, it just works so well and we use it mostly on eco mode and you can hardly hear it so quiet. You have the benefit of dual fuel when on hook up and the remote control via app on your phone even when away from the vehicle is one of the best features. You won’t regret it 😊

Hi Greg, great video. Question though: In one of your earlier videos is see you show a separate system (heater and boiler) i believer it was a Whale boiler and gas propex hs2000 heater. Advantage of this system IMO is that i can install both underfloor, which will save extra space. Another - i would consider as an - advantage would be that it are 2 separate systems, if one is broke, the other still works.... So, my question is, why did you choose for the Truma Combi system? (in comparison to 2 separate systems?). Thanks! Antoon - the Netherlands
