Hi Greg i find your videos very informative, q. ... it is usual practise to put the toilet cassette access on the outside of the van, but i can see that body shape - mouldings might make this difficult , internal access would be a lot easer. Do i assume that you do not get any toilet smell with this installation?

Greetings from Colorful Colorado. I've had to completely rebuild the aft 3 feet of a conventional travel trailer (bath/shower area) due to roof leak water damage, and I've done two cargo trailer conversions to campers. When I need to glue a piece of material to a wall, as in your shower build, I have found a pressure sensitive adhesive works well. You trowel the material onto the solid surface, (using a fine tooth trowel, 3/8 max) let it get tacky (the longer it air dries, the stickier it gets) then simply press your surface material into place. I'm not familiar with the adhesive you were using, and it might be great...but when you trowel on the pressure sensitive adhesive there are no air gaps, and it's not ever going anywhere. Warning, when you start to apply your cover sheet, make sure everything is lined up, because once you start to adhere it, it's like contact cement and is very difficult to adjust.

A proper home has a toilet and shower. A lot of builds don't have this, even my little campervan has a toilet and shower and I'd miss it if it wasn't there. A shower inside is not so important in really hot climates but why not fit one anyway if building a toilet cubicle, even if a bucket of water and battery operated shower head can be used in it to save expense if it's out of one's budget. I see people have portaloos under seats and hidden in small cupboards but privacy is important I think plus the fact it won't feel like you're sh**ing or pi**ing in your kitchen lol, but seriously. Can't wait until van tour vid!!!

Hello from London Canada, excellent video and tips throughout. I'm still in the head to paper planning stage of my shower build for my Ram Promaster 3500 extended high roof. @@RustyCas999 My van build has been a work in progress, expensive non-budget friendly project. It has also been coupled with huge life altering events. Unlike a lot of people who have documented their progress from start to finish I started with still images but soon left that behind in favour of doing a completed video and explanation. I will say that no two DIY van conversions will be the same. When my van is completed there will be no other like it. Just the same as Greg's Sprinter build it's totally unique and took hours of work in completion. At this very point due to a family medical problem my van is about 75% completed, I need to finish it but doubt I'll ever use it for its intended purpose.

At 6:53 - what is the grey paint on that surface, flecked with dots? Some kind of epoxy paint? Looks great by the way. 9:04 - that tiny detail of sloping the lip of the tray is astounding! Hello 😇, the grey floor finish is Altro and we covered the whole floor before fitting any furniture. See this video for full details kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKS0m4aaZptla6s Re the tray, I can let you into a secret. I put a square bit of wood in first and there was a gap so that led me to think it must be designed with a slope in mind. Good idea though 😎 Teaching is an admirable profession but the pay here is very poor. That’s typical of these type of jobs. Very rewarding on another level. Thanks for following along. Nice job, Greg. One thing I'm having a hard time finding in any video where there is a hole drilled in the van floor, is the proper way to prevent corrosion in the hole and how to properly seal it from under the van. Would love to know how you did that.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ian, cut a hole just slightly largr than your drop out vent or pipe etc, file any rough edges off of the cut edge, paint with hammerite to seal the raw metal edges. Place your pipe or drop out vent inthe hole and seal all around the top and underside with sikaflex 512. After it had cured I did spray the underside with waxoyl but that was only for added protection.

Hi mate, when you said about the blade on your saw only being exposed enough to go through your board this creates more resistance/work for the motor as you have more teeth in contact with the work piece. The saw will cut best with the blade fully exposed, max cut depth, because less teeth will be in contact with the work piece resulting in less friction for the motor. Cheers 👍

Hi Greg, could you clarify something for me please. I need to purchase a shower kit (head, etc.), and i find mixed reviews and opinions whether "normal" showers would work with electric pumps or not. In theory, when the thumb lever is released the water is shut off. I read reviews that say for pumped showers where the pump is not pressure sensitive, this means the pump continues to try and pump water but without water flowing. This risks damaging the pump motor and blowing the unit. However some pumped showers are regulated by pressure - in circumstances where the water is stopped from flowing, the pump switches off. (I will be using the Shurflo pump you recommend.) let's clear this up once and for all: do we need to buy the "electric pump convertible motorhome showers" (as usual, priced way over the "normal' shower kits), or will these "traditional" showers work just fine. As I could not find link to what shower kit/head you recommend, this is the one i am considering getting: www.amazon.co.uk/Aizhy-Stainless-Bathroom-Portable-Personal/dp/B07F7Z27W9/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=handheld+bidet+spray+kit&qid=1590128462&s=diy&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExWUtJMUI4WE1RVFNXJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTQ0OTk3MlJOMUE3RDg1SjcxViZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzQ3NDgwMU5ZU01HTlgzQVRMNiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= thanks for your input on this!!

Sprinters are high topped vans and I'm a short arse of 5' 7" so I was thinking that under that shower tray could a 3 inch deep bowl be fitted to really get the water out faster. Maybe I'm over thinking it. I like a power shower is that possible? I find power showers are shorter as it is more efficient of getting you clean in a shorter time, use less water and power possibly too. Also on the Fiat would it be impossible to add a shower/loo cubical? But I'm still not sure what I want. I only have a basic license so won't be able to go for the bigger vans, unless I take the test for a bus and then the build takes on a whole new turn. I had looked at bus conversions, especially the minibus type used in villages or by special schools. Before I start parting with my hard earned, I'm really going to need to know what I want. I have lived in caravans before - statics and tow away's, I don't like low ceilings or pokey rooms. But I have learnt from camping that there are options, like large canvass extensions - more than just an awning extend your living space a lot. A log heater like I have for my hot tent creates a warm outer room. It's definitely on my build plans. I've even considered the Kei-Car vans from Japan - great for cost and they fit nicely down tiny country roads, especially out in the sticks were I am. All good advice though Greg, thanks.

My Tray has multiple cracks - You tube seems to be full of reports of these so called Thetford trays cracking due to being low quality and super thin. Does anyone have a solution for repairing or covering a cracked tray or is the only answer to rip the lot out and try and find a decent option? is your 2018 tray still intack Greg?

Hi Greg, Thanks so much for doing these videos, they are so useful. Your attention to detail is Amazing. I am starting a Renault Master build in Sydney And will copy a lot of your ideas. Just a question on your shower, you did mention in your Q &A video if it was a good idea or not. Now you have used your van for a while, if you did another build would you put in a shower and toilet ? I only just have room for one and like your design of 975 x 700 but it is a lot of space that may not get well used, when we can shower outside in Australia quite easily. Love to hear your experience so far? Cheers Tim

That’s a good question and I’m not planning to put a shower in this nee van build. We don’t use the one in ours and use other services which are easily available. I will be putting in a toilet though as that is essential.

Hi, noticed the toilette cassette is facing the inside of the van instead of having facing the van panel with a little door when empty is necessary - of course this will save from an extra cut through the van side - I am personally having a dilemma, not sure what to go for
@GregVirgoe

Pasquale Gatto watch my first France video and you will see how the small door works. Cutting and sealing a hole for door at the height is a nightmare as the van sides are not straight and it goes through the plastic trim. Difficult to do well.

Hi I am a joiner and well impressed with your work.so can I say you call it mastic to seal shower is it not silicone. Also when you fixed king span to roof why could you not get he fit 10 mm less and then run expanding foam in gap this would also stick it in place. But I must say this is the best build on you tube by a long way.looking forward to watch more videos regards kevin

How did you figure out where to drill the pilot hole was in the vicinity of clearing the suspension etc/ in the first place? Did you do those measurements on sketches or did you physically measure the location on the van itself? If the latter, how did you do it so accurately?

Richard Sementilli physically measured off known items such as the wheel arch or the screws I put in to secure the floor.

When scribing a panel which fits flush on three sides (as shown in this video), how do you ensure trimming off more from one edge doesnt create a gap on the opposite edge?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
There was no gap to lose as you would when you normally scribe, the final board was overlapping the left hand side wall so I just had to run the pencil down the inside crease right in the corner and cut exactly to that line. Hope that helps

You mentioned that your shower pan cracked as did others. Do you think it could have been installed differently to avoid the cracking? Were you able to repair it? Or did you replace the pan and if so with what? Thank you for all you've done for the community. Cheers!

I don’t think there was anything I could have done to stop it cracking. It was way too thin and not suitable for the job. Taken out and new one hand made out of timber and fibreglass over top.

Thanks again for this Greg. So is the reason people put their toilet waste inside the van due to the structure of the van as you never seem to see motorhomes with the waste cassette point and the filler inside.

@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe Жыл бұрын
Hello Tim, on the circular saw I used a Freud 80T blade and for the jigsaw I use T101BR blades which cut on the downstroke so you have you face side up. Here is a link amzn.to/3O05gRZ. I use masking tape on both sides to help prevent chip out and don’t go too fast let the blade do the work take your time and you’ll get good results. My overhead cupboard video explains more about the blade choice 👍🏼😊

Hi Greg, Really helpful video as usual! I would like to ask about extractor fan install. I have the same extractor fan I think (Xpelair LV100 12v) and the unit is 87mm deep to back of motor. My van wall is probably only going to be around 60-63mm thick. It looks like your fan is fitted flush to the wall so just like to know if you had this problem and if so what was your solution? TIA

Clair Sulley no I didn’t do a video of that because it wasn’t my best choice. So didn’t want to recommend it. I ended up putting a 12v AC fan in running off a mains transformer so I have to use my inverter. It’s not a good way of doing it and would be better if can find a 12v DC fan but not many nice ones about. Sorry that doesn’t help you much.

Hi Greg- Fabulous work - Even as an engineer and seasoned DIYer I am really enjoying your videos and picking up a lot of useful tips. Thank you! I have a question about why you decided to have the loo cassette pull out into the van rather than externally? Is it to do with the shower drain positioning versus the chasis ? or that you didnt want / couldnt suitably site and fit the required door on the outside? Many Thanks. Jon
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Jon, it was mainly because there is a lot of steel supports and van wall to cut out and remove to get the door to go outside and it would be halfway through the plastic trim which would have to be cut, the van side is curved and would need to be filled with tons of mastic, the list of negatives was huge. We have been in a van with a cassette inside and it seals itself when removed and with good hygiene, it was really easy to deal with and no smells at all. Easier solution all round I think.

Gerard Philibert, there is a link in the video description for Thetford shower tray, I do not know if your newer toilet is the same shape as mine? Our toilet is no longer produced, but there must be new trays for newer models, that it the whole design basis. Hope the link helps you.
